  1. Patrick (subsea) - can you bring that filter to the frag swap? I can't message you for some reason

  2. Where's the info on the DIY LED behind the scenes? I was thinking it might be under meetings - but I don't see it.

  3. I'm super excited about the guest speaker!!! You should update the top post to include that information
  4. I love this discussion. It really helps to clear the air of some assumptions I think we make based on what we see. I haven't fully decided that I want to go with an HOB, but I do know that surface skimming has made a huge difference on all of my tanks in the past. Lots of great ideas. Except Victoly - I have no idea what that picture is about. Can you explain?
  5. Thanks for all the feedback. I was going to add a protein skimmer to the biocube, but the pump on the protein simmer is broken so it's going back to the store. I only had two clown fish in the biocube. I say had, cause one died the night after I removed the false back wall. I think there was just too much gunk built up in the back compartments and the nitrates went through the roof. I just did a water change and switched out the media in the API Nexx Canister for two new bags of chemi-pure, one bag of seachem and polyfiber. I also changed the internal pump to stir up the surface of the water. To be honest, I'm not really sure what to do. The tank is in my bedroom, so I don't really want the noise of a sump (or expense at this point). The HOB seemed like a cheap way to skim the surface. I can probably rig the HOB to draw water from the API Nexx canister so the water goes through the canister first, then through the HOB. Or am I really just wasting money and need to go in for a sump?
  6. Tore out the back wall of my biocube yesterday. Loving the new look. Hating the fact that I lost both peppermint shrimp and one black osc. clown :(. WTF

When I tore down my dry biocube that I washed out first with a hose there was still so much gunk it wasnt funny. I literally washed it until I couldnt see any more gunk then cut it out and found that gunk got under silicone and into every crevice.

Depending on how much sediment was piled up, it could have also been a h2s release. That would kill pretty quickly, as I don't think that nitrate has the ability to kill that rapidly. (The median LC50 for fathead minnows is 1,341 mg/l, or TONS of nitrate to kill)

h2s release makes more sense. I don't know the chemistry of my tanks, I just know when something looks bad. My remaining fish has survived :) so things are looking up.

  7. I'm just curious. I know I've switched over to aio systems or canister filtration, but I don't think I know why. Why don't we use HOB filters for marine setups? One reason I'm asking is because I recently purchased this filter for my freshwater planted aquarium and I love it! (http://www.drsfoster...29&pcatid=16729) It took care of the surface scum in no time. I took out the first clamshell and there was enough room for me to put a small bag of chemi pure. Now I'm thinking of purchasing one of the larger sizes for my biocube. I just finished taking out the false wall yesterday and I love the amount of room that's in the tank. However, surface scum is already starting to accumulate. There's enough room for me to put chemipure or purigen on each side. I could probably also fit polyfiber into one of the clamshells as well. I was debating about having it pump my API Nexx filter (output of Nexx leads into HOB), but I'm thinking I might use this as my only means of filtration. Thoughts? Ideas? Comments?
  8. might not make the meeting - decided to take out the back wall of my biocube and the process is taking a lot longer than I had hoped
  9. Today's scheduled fun: Aquarium maintenance. And with four aquariums, it'll probably take most of the day. Good thing I find this activity relaxing and fun.

  10. Looks awesome! Can you give some more detail on the blue acrylic background? I want to make the black background on my cardiff blue so the seahorses stop turning black all the time to blend in. How might I go about this? Would I have to empty the tank? Not sure that's possible . . .
  11. I've got an entire bucket full. My cat is gonna love me!!
  12. Awesome post. I agree that after a certain point you have to manually remove GHA and that you can determine success based on whether or how fast it grows back. I beat my gha with the combination of manual removal, cuc including turbos and sea hare, fluval clearmax (phosphate remover) and a small DIY algae scrubber. If anyone wants to know more about any of these items just pm me.
  13. Thanks for the worms You're welcome! I'm so glad you posted cause I totally forgot to place the frag in my tank. It's been floating at the top in its bag all night
  14. I'll take "16 TONS". It will get you one day older and deeper in debt. Sorry, I had a flashback remembering that song. I would love some dsb critters. Patrick I would have figured you'd have these already? I've got two people ahead of you and then I want to wait and let them replenish. Then I'll get back in touch with you.
  15. I've got a ton! You're welcome to as many as you like. Just pm me.
  16. Finally opened my new aquarium and the tank is broken :(

Yeah, major bummer. Now I have to wait for the company to file a complaint with UPS. Why does anyone use UPS any more?

Sorry for your tribulations. I just did receive a used 29G Biocube. Sea Robin is going in there.

    Sump ideas

I've skimmed the info above so please excuse me if this information is already stated. Can someone simplify the differences between having live rock as opposed to a dsb in the sump for biological filtration?
  19. Sometimes being addicted to this hobby really sucks. Just spent almost $200 on a new tank/light/filter that I don't really need - just want. Arrgg - I should kick myself.

You should be spanked. Enjoy the addiction. If the dogs get hungery, I will feed them.

What kind of biotheme for the tank? Enjoy the addiction, quite spanking yourself.

Umm Patrick - Spanked isn't quite appropriate nowadays . . . just an fyi

but to answer your question - the tank and light will replace the current set up for my pea puffer (more appropriate lighting for a planted tank) and the filter will be used on my five gallon that's going to my office.

  20. I'm jealous! I've got turbo snails in all my tanks and they just swallow the pretty stuff whole!
  21. What kind of sea rods do you have in the middle of the tank?
  22. today was going to be so productive . . . I blame the seahorses

Mine fascinate me, so I know what you mean.

  23. Don't buy the ma ma mia worms. I've got a ton and I'm happy to donate some. If you come to the August meeting, you can get them then.
