Yup - just got two dragon face pipefish from RCA that eat frozen Cyclopees!! Pictures to come . . .

No way?! Awesome! Pipefish are so cool, esp when they eat frozen. Can't wait for the pics!

  2. wow - so very very cool!! I love it! You just convinced me to definitely get some baby sea horses from Brooks and convert my 29 gallon into their new home . If you have any extra shoal grass or manatee grass (not sure which I saw in the photos), I would be very interested in purchasing some from you. What kind of lights do you have on the tank? They look very bright. I've always been curious about the growing of sea grass with sea horses. The grasses need high light, but sources online say sea horses prefer lower light. Any insight into that topic would be awesome. Thanks for finally sharing
  3. Hey - I'm excited to see these new pics - except I can't see them . Do I just need to cut and paste each link into my web browser?
  4. Mine is doing a good job of growing out my macro algaes. The pods are hit and miss. I saw a bunch the other day eating a decaying oar grass leaf. I think they prefer the decaying algae to the real stuff I dose with. I'm hoping the pods will get to a mass where I can easily siphon them out. Right now, I'd have to suction them off the wall (rather than the water column). My mandarins are doing well on bbs so I guess I'm not too concerned about the pods. I am actually more interested in having the macros grow out at the moment.
  5. i want/need the QT tank!!! let me know if its still available. I can pick up later tonight or maybe a weeknight. T
  6. I work at 35 and North Lamar. I'm in education so I have to be at work by 8am all week. Are you able to come that distance in the morning? I'm going between two different campuses, so if you tell me which day, I can tell you which school to come by. I don't teach a class until later in the day so I should be able to come out quickly and trade off the Red Gracilaria if you tell me the approximate time and then txt me when you get there. LMK via pm.
  7. Everything $5 or less All displayed on 8.5 x 11" white paper for scale I live in North Pflugerville off the 45 and Kelly Lane Red Gracilaria - one large multi-branch piece ($5) Sea Oar grass - clump on right hand side - up close pictures to show detail ($5) Individual pieces of Codium ($1)
  8. I agree - very cool! I love looking at freshwater aquascapes - it gives me ideas for my marine tank. BTW - I was a thrown aback by the strange links/pictures on the site - those viewing the aquarium pictures with kids might not want to scroll all the way to the bottom.
  9. I'm mixing it up between roti food I purchased from aqua-culture nursery farms, phyto feast, DT's and an enrichment blend from seahorsesource.com I bought for the live brine shrimp I have to feed my sea horses. In terms of cost effectiveness - I'm looking at just feeding the phytoplankton tank the enrichment blend or a culture blend they sell at seahorsesource.com. I agree with a comment made above that continuously buying phyto feast or DT's is too expensive. I tried to culture my own micro-algae but gave up not too soon into the project. So far, so good. We'll see.
  10. lol. I've read a bunch on this as well. Contamination is anything other than fresh saltwater and the single pod you are trying to reproduce - for the reasons you already mentioned. I always fail when I try to do things "the right way" so my setup is anything but sterile. Plus I decided to add macro algae (i've got ulva, chaeto, garcilaria, codium, and left over oar grass tumbling) we'll see what happens . I can still see plenty of tiger pods so i'm excited about that. I'm hoping the macro will "eat" up any extra nutrients that might cause a crash. Crashing is the main thing I'm worried about . . .
  11. That's cool . I totally thought about buying one of those, but didn't want to spend the money. I love how you have it set up to automatically enter your tank! Ironically, I've ended up creating a DIY type one using a 3 gallon aquarium I had sitting around in the garage (bought and never opened of course). Its the Aquaview 360 with color changing LED I originally had it set up with the grid on the bottom, then live rock on top of that and tried to get a microscopic culture of rotifers going. Well I hated not being able to see the rotifers so I decided to go with Tiger pods instead. I thought I could try and use the same tank for macroalgae so I did the following: I glued an extra suction cup to the large round opening in the grid, then I drilled a hole in the suction cup just big enough to fit rigid tubing. I cut the middle section away from a water bottle and am using this to steady the grid 4-5 inches from the bottom of the tank. I made 3 different openings around the water bottle where it meets the bottom of the tank. Now the air moves down through the rigid tube and bubbles out from under the water bottle and up through the grid. There is live rock in the bottom section where the pods like to hang out. The air flow has done a great job of keeping my macro algae in constant motion/tumble on the top half. I love this setup and it has done really well for the past week (made it this weekend). I'm adding some ulva tomorrow - so I can let you know how well it tumbles then. Sorry you can't see the macro-algae in the pictures - the LED is not very bright, the room lighting is bad and the water is nice and green from feeding it micro-algae. I promise it's there tumbling .
  12. mine originally came as a loose clipping and has grown great on its own! I have since attached it to a frag plug with a rubberband so it stays in one place. It has continued to grow well (I originally tried super-glue, but it didn't like that much and "freed" itself). Pieces have fallen off in my attempt to move stuff around and these "new clippings" have also grown great just floating around the tank or pushed slightly into the sand (though I've found the algae is much more appreciative if you dig a hole first and then push a tiny bit of sand over it to hold it down - rather than try to push the algae through the sand). Good luck!
  13. i'm new to this so I don't know. But I do know that Dan and Abbie at seahorsesource.com are very knowledgeable! They have helped me so much. I highly encourage you call them or whomever you first purchased the horses.
  14. 'course I always feel guilty about the cycle of life humor - I'm sure I wouldn't have enjoyed being thrown away if I was a sculpin. Comment made me laugh none the less
  15. Ok - so i've been waiting to respond until I heard back regarding job interviews. Well good news - I've been accepted for a new job today!! Now I'm ready to join everyone on the trip. Where do people stay? I can camp, but to be honest I prefer a motel/hotel room with shower. Can I bring my dogs - or will they scare all the collectibles away?? I'd love to stay where other people are staying to socialize more - It'll just be me and my dogs (if allowed). LMK Teresa
  16. I only bought the nano cube 8 mo. ago brand new. As I am now recalling, the GFCI circuit used to trip when I had my old aquarium and 70w viper. I would come home from work and the system would be off. I always assumed there was a power failure during the day or something. I agree that there seems to be too many amps pulling on the system when the lights come on. I'll see what my builder has to say first. They are really good at getting back to me - already had a faulty kitchen fixture and broken/leaking ac that they fixed inside of a week's time.
  17. So when only the light are plugged in, the system handles it fine. When I leave the lights on and plug everything else in, the system stays on. The power trips when the lights go from being off to on. I wouldn't think that there is too much electricity running through the system that it can't handle the burst of energy that happens when the lights first come on. I'm thinking something is wrong with the GFCI in the kitchen. It's tripped throughout the year at random when even less items have been plugged in. It's a brand new house so I have a bumper to bumper warranty. I'll submit a work order just to be sure. Could it be something else? Is it possible I'm running too much electricity on the system? It's only a 2 gallon nano w/13w light, canister, the 12 gallon nano with stock light and pump, a couple of fans, etc. hummmmmm.
  18. Hi All, My 12 gallon jbj nanocube stock lights (2x24wPC) keep tripping my kitchen GFCI and the power goes out to all the outlets in the dinning room and kitchen. I discovered it was the lights through lots of trial and error - but I don't know what this means. Is there a short in the system? Do I need to replace the bulbs (they are about 8 mo old)? What's strange is that this tank has it's own GFCI power cord, but this isn't tripped - just the main one for the kitchen/dinning room in my house. Do I have too much electricity running through the system? I have my 2 gallon nano in the dinning room and my office supplies as well. I've unplugged my laptop, printers, etc, but the system continues to trip. If there is something wrong with the stock lights how do I fix them? I've got corals that need light! Ideas? Help!! T
  19. Love the pics!! Every time I see the larger sea horses I have to stop myself from setting up a second tank On the red macro - I ordered three frags from ebay. So far I'm very happy with the purchase, they were inexpensive, arrived healthy and have been surviving in my tank for 2+ weeks. These frags are small - but mine are already growing .
  20. I hope Patrick is okay??? I know he was really looking forward to the meeting . . .
  21. I was really looking forward to meeting everyone - then I took another look at my gas tank and the distance. Money's tight right now so the drive was just a bit too far for this weekend . Please post what ya'll learned - I'd love to hear!!!
  22. tried it today. The goby and shrimp came out and ate some bbs from under the waterer - but the sea horses stayed in their hitching spots throughout the tank. I even tried to corral a couple of them and they wanted nothing to do with it. I decided it wouldn't be nice to make them go without dinner, so I ended up dosing the entire tank again. I'm going to give it another try tomorrow - but I doubt they will go for it. The last thing i'm going to try and am in the process of making is a completely mesh feeding station that maybe I can drop into one of their favorite hitching spots. Really not sure if it'll work, but we'll see. Any other ideas or clean up suggestions are appreciated!
