  1. I'm in DOC hell and have been for several months. Will it ever end?? Maybe Santa Claus will clean up my tank and bring some healthy SPS.

      What's been happening?

The nuisance algae we get in our tanks make huge amounts of DOC compounds that are detrimental to corals. You need to physically get the algae out of your tank. Once you do it shouldn't take long for your corals to bounce back.

I think I let a few colonies get too big for my 80G tank, had an ALK spike in the summer and lost a couple of those colonies. Ever since then it’s been a struggle to get things to stabilize even though my parameters are stable, STN across the board on all coral compounding the problem. Last ditch effort are 30-40% weekly water changes, which looks like might be helping…we’ll see.

  2. Where can I order a plusrite 150W DE 20000K bulb? I can't find any on Ebay.

thanks! I made the mistake of ordering a "Coral Blue 20000K" off ebay and the bulb is GREEN.

  3. This has been the year of Alk swings for my tank. How can 7 dKH be too high? 50% of my SPS are showing "burnt" tips. Frustrated :(

Well it has been running below 5 for the longest until I finally tested. I've been bringing it up over the last 2 mos. Had a couple of spikes maybe to 8 during this time while I have tuned my dosing schedule. I do carbon dose via biopellets, I'm wondering if my sweet spot is like 6? Anyone else running biopellets run low alk?

for the burned tips you can use lugal solution(iodine) and it will help your sps

Interesting. I can't remove the coral, are you saying to treat the tank?

  4. I think I've finally got my Alk under control, been having swings for a while and nothing has been happy. I hope everything is going to make it!

mine went haywire due to a battery falling into the tank... -most- of my corals survived, but the GSP died along with the Xenia... Oddly, I cant seem to get rid of either of them in my wife's tank..

Interesting, I didn't know a battery could impact Alk. My dosing pump line had lots of junk/build up effecting the flow. Alk has been all over the place until I finally corrected the problem. Test test test your water!

  5. Just got my new Apex installed and configured. My tank is now officially high tech, woot!

  6. Just ordered a BML fixture to light the corners of my half circle! I'll be running a hybrid MH + LED setup, should be interesting!

  7. Just broke my $80 bulb trying to seat it in my fixture, so frustrating!

  9. The new year means it’s time for me to order new bulbs. Or, do I just take the plunge and go with LED…decisions decisions

I am glad I went to led lights over the 2- 500watt mh's I had the house and tank stay WAY cooler. If I did it again I would buy them and not DIY. And I am a DIY kind of guy.

Was wondering the same thing myself. I hope there wasn't anything personal on any of the posts. His information on macro algae and natural reefing was interesting, even though I don't use either. It's nice to see the other side of things.

  12. Just installed a plusrite bulb in my tank @ work. Looks good!

  13. These fans are good for all kinds of stuff: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006ON0QQ . I use for my tank and for electronics, they look cool and do just that. You know it's the same as the Tunze right? :)

  14. Just got my first order in from Reefs2Go. Very well packed, packages were individually labeled and everything was there! They are now my go to CUC dealer, much better than the "other" one I have dealt with in the past.

Keep in mind their invert system is directly tied to their fish system. Therefore, I'd inquire about the QT procedures of their fish as diseases in the water could come into your tank via CUC.

  15. Just finished setting up a BC 29 at work. Getting it wet tomorrow! Guys are excited, wish me luck :).

We have our tank next to window. Started to have gha, we keep the blinds closed now.

  18. "After using it I will probly switch back to chem tests for it." Good choice. There is no benefit IMO to the Hanna calcium checker, it's not more accurate and it's not easier than traditional tests. So I must ask, what's the point? I own the checker and have had the same problems that you describe.
  19. Stopping GAC in hopes of curing HLLE on my regal tang.

  20. I had one test with the CA Checker come out at 420 every test that has followed it blinks 600. I know based on two other tests kits that I have that my CA is somewhere between 420-450. And yes I use RODI water when doing my tests and follow all the instructions. There are some threads on reefcentral talking about ways to improve the results, one being to get an insulin syringe from the drug store and use it to provide a more precise measurement of the .1ml required sample. Personally I'm not willing to spend any more money/time on it to get it to work as advertised.
  21. I own both of these checkers. The ALK checker is very good but I have not had much luck with my Calcium checker. I will be curious to know your results with the calcium checker.
  22. is it just me or is Hanna's Calcium Checker no bueno? My experience with it (3-4 tests) has been sub par, I don't think I'll use it any more. What a waste.

    1. bimmerzs

      bimmerzs

I'll buy it from ya if you would like to get rid of it. To be fair, there is aproblem with the syringes that came with the kit's, I believe hanna has announced that. Also you must use ro/di water with zero tds and the ro/di water can't have a high ca content or that can also affect the reading's.

    2. BBMarlin

      BBMarlin

I think it's ridiculous how the checker uses .1ml of sample. By using such a small sample they are introducing a propensity of high user error into the equation.

  23. Let me tell you guys that dipping your coral is not enough. I have dipped (Coral RX) every frag that I have put in my display and still ended up with AEFW. The truly only way to protect yourself is to QT your corals. I literally have thousands of dollars of SPS corals and now have a big problem on my hands. If I would have spent the few hundred to build a small QT, I would not be in this situation. Keep in mind that I'm fairly certain that I got these little critters from this community, so be careful.
