  4. Book club poll ends Feb 4th. Get your vote in!!

  5. When should we close the poll for the ARC Book Club winter 2013 book? If you haven't voted yet, or checked out the thread, its a sub-forum under Reefkeeping.

  6. So is there an interest in a book club or not? Only ClarkiiCircus has responded to my post.

You posted it in the premium members only section- try maybe open form off topic?

  7. Anyone have a 150 watt HQI fixture & bulb I can borrow for one week? Mine just went out and the new one won't be in for a bit. Thanks

I've got my backup you can borrow. Wont be avail until 3 or so. Cedar Park. Let me know if you can't find sooner/closer.

I would love to borrow it. I'm going to Ren Fest and can pick it up on my way back into town. Can you email me your address [email protected]. I will be back between 7 and 8pm. Thanks!!!

  8. I totally killed everything in my 12 gallon nano :(. Medicating the entire tank is never a good idea - I should have just stuck with water changes. I hate life lessons (especially ones that repeat themselves).

Sorry Teresa. I got some mushrooms and some star polyps if you when you restart.

      Teresa

thanks for the condolences. I will probably reach out in a few months for some frags. I'm trying to look on the bright side: I'll know which corals are my strongest.

  9. Patrick (subsea) - can you bring that filter to the frag swap? I can't message you for some reason

  10. Where's the info on the DIY LED behind the scenes? I was thinking it might be under meetings - but I don't see it.

  11. Tore out the back wall of my biocube yesterday. Loving the new look. Hating the fact that I lost both peppermint shrimp and one black osc. clown :(. WTF

      (Bio)³

When I tore down my dry biocube that I washed out first with a hose there was still so much gunk it wasnt funny. I literally washed it until I couldnt see any more gunk then cut it out and found that gunk got under silicone and into every crevice.

Depending on how much sediment was piled up, it could have also been a h2s release. That would kill pretty quickly, as I don't think that nitrate has the ability to kill that rapidly. (The median LC50 for fathead minnows is 1,341 mg/l, or TONS of nitrate to kill)

    4. Teresa

      Teresa

h2s release makes more sense. I don't know the chemistry of my tanks, I just know when something looks bad. My remaining fish has survived :) so things are looking up.

  12. Today's scheduled fun: Aquarium maintenance. And with four aquariums, it'll probably take most of the day. Good thing I find this activity relaxing and fun.

  13. Finally opened my new aquarium and the tank is broken :(

Yeah, major bummer. Now I have to wait for the company to file a complaint with UPS. Why does anyone use UPS any more?

Sorry for your tribulations. I just did receive a used 29G Biocube. Sea Robin is going in there.

  14. Now I know I'm tired when I don't even have the motivation to set up my new tank :(

  15. Sometimes being addicted to this hobby really sucks. Just spent almost $200 on a new tank/light/filter that I don't really need - just want. Arrgg - I should kick myself.

      subsea

You should be spanked. Enjoy the addiction. If the dogs get hungery, I will feed them.

What kind of biotheme for the tank? Enjoy the addiction, quite spanking yourself.

    3. Teresa

      Teresa

Umm Patrick - Spanked isn't quite appropriate nowadays . . . just an fyi

    4. Teresa

      Teresa

but to answer your question - the tank and light will replace the current set up for my pea puffer (more appropriate lighting for a planted tank) and the filter will be used on my five gallon that's going to my office.

  16. today was going to be so productive . . . I blame the seahorses

      Niko's Reef

Mine fascinate me, so I know what you mean.

  17. Its sad when cleaning the aquarium becomes the reward for cleaning the kitchen . . .

    1. subsea

      subsea

      It is easy to understand.

some things are fun and some things ain't fun. It still needs to get done.

  18. watching seahorses learn to eat from the trough is painstakingly slow

    1. KimP

      KimP

are you luring them over to it using forceps with mysis or something?

    2. Teresa

      Teresa

I'm putting it directly in front of them. I've even put them in the trough. I've seen them eat one, then go outside and try to get more through the acrylic. Is there a test for seahorse IQ, cause I don't think mine are very bright :/

  19. I thought all was well with the heat last night, until I saw my pink spot goby on the floor this morning :(. I loved that fish. It jumped out of the tank with the chiller . . . I guess the chiller wasn't able to keep up with the fifteen degree differential :(

    1. Grog

      Grog

:( bummer. Sunday I'm cutting eggcrate for a top. I've had too many jumping episodes. Sorry for your loss.
    2. KimP

      KimP

That is a bummer :( sorry to hear about that.

  20. So I know the solution for my heat problem (an 86 degree - and rising - house with no ac): ice cream and a ten lbs bag of ice for the fish; now I've just got to figure out one for the dogs . . . .

If you've got space in your freezer, take a small bucket or mixing bowl, fill with water, and place some toys or treats in it, freeze, set out for them to enjoy (outside of course!)

    3. Teresa

      Teresa

I like those ideas - especially the one that is free ;). I'm thinking it might be time to buy a window ac since this is the 3rd time this year I've had problems with my central air!

    4. KimP

      KimP

Geez, third time? I hope the company that supposedly ”fixed” it the previous times isn't charging you :/

  21. Last Call for Port A!! We leave tomorrow morning at 10am from Austin! PM me if you'd like to ride along.

  22. Anyone wanting to go to Port A but still doesn't have accommodations? Come join me and Patrick (Subsea) in an RV! We'll be parking right on the beach near the Jetty. There's room for one (or two if you share a bed) more. $200 for the entire weekend!!! Message me asap.

    1. KevinB

      KevinB

I'm not sharing a bed with Patrick...no offense to the cajun!

    2. Teresa

      Teresa

LOL - there are three beds. No one would be sharing a bed with me or Patrick.

  23. Anyone want a ride down to the coast for our Port A trip? Boyfriend and I broke up, so I'll be driving my Vibe. Much prefer to have company :).

  24. Can I reuse saltwater sand in a freshwater set up if I rinse it really well? The sand has been sitting dormant for 6+ months.

i used crushed aragonite in a tank and killed my discuss. Just make sure its sand only and you should be fine!

    3. Teresa

      Teresa

well shoot - does aragonite come in a fine form like sand? I know it looks like sand - just want to make sure its not sand made of aragonite - the bag is long gone. hummm

    4. Timfish

      Timfish

If it's a calcerous sand it will raise the alkalinity and pH of freshwater, good for some fish bad for others.

  25. AC is out, aquariums are almost at 90 degrees (except the one with chiller - thx God for chillers!). I've turned out the lights, adding aeration, I don't have any clip on fans - anything else I can do to cool them down?

Had the same problem last month. I swapped 3 bottles of frozen water out in the sump every couple hours and worked pretty well.

How did the tank fair after the power outage?

    4. Teresa

      Teresa

Thanks for all the comments and support. The tanks all survived and fortunately the ac was just acting up for that one hot day. 'course by the time the maintenance guy got to my house at midnight, the ac was cooling again and he wouldn't even look at it! Been fine since though.
