1. Not sure if you're building a custom tank or not, but taller tanks require thicker glass/acrylic and consequently cost more. I like my tank's 24" height, but if I were taller, I would definitely consider a taller tank. Of course, there's also the issue of light penetration with taller tanks.
2. If the sand has been in that tank for awhile, you might have a lot of issues with NH3, NO3, NO2, etc. Maybe I'm missing something here, but you're planning to use 300lbs of sand for a fuge for your 24g?
3.

Before you give up on halides, I would encourage you to continue to make adjustments to things other than your equipment. Improving the chemistry and biology of your tank may be the better investment at this point. There are a lot of great tanks with metal halides, and more recently, with T5s. Great tanks are more likely the result of better husbandry than the equipment. Unless the heat/energy issues are really bothering you, at this point it might be best to retain the equipment you already have.
4. How high is your pendant from the water?
5. I don't think you should underestimate the need for a center brace-- if something goes wrong, the consequences can be really bad (I guess that's true with a lot of things...). Having said that, what you're suggesting you'll do with the center brace would likely present at least these two issues: 1) acrylic may melt/warp under the MH, 2) You don't want to install the acrylic while the tank has water in it. You might be better off adding more T5s and re-aquascaping so that lighting will be optimal for all inhabitants.
6. Some hairy mushrooms are fish eaters...
7. Did you have other stuff in your ATO bucket? What makes you think that the TDS spike was due to phosphates? If your bucket had dust, or anything else, it's equally possible that that is causing the TDS spike.

Feed Pump

If possible, you should plumb it in to your return/drain and save yourself the extra pump/heat.
9. Mike, what are you using for your fuge light?
10. I still think it could be a parasite...
11. I was going to do something similar to Mitch, but the method Jim suggested is just as effective. Here's an example of what Jim was describing on Melev's tank: Ghetto version: http://www.melevsreef.com/pics/07/10/ca_reactor_in_sump1.jpg Nicer version: http://www.melevsree...fluent_cup1.jpg (full article: http://www.melevsree...um_reactor.html) Daniel
12. Is it too late for me to get in on this?
13. I can't really tell, but that looks like ich...
14. Is it just at night or at all times? My yellow tang becomes a faint yellow/white at night.
15. How are your SPS looking under the new light?
16. If you have the space, gravity feeding is a perfectly good option. Pros: -No Pump Cons: -If the solenoid gets stuck (not a problem if it is normally closed design) the bucket would empty into your tank -Must be placed above the tank/sump
17. If you try some of the Amquel stuff, it'll drop your NH3 quickly, but be sure you have plenty of aeration. Honestly, you might be better off with a little of Seachem's Stability. It seems like you just need to finish a cycle and the Amquel would just be pulling the NH3 out of the water, instead of letting the bacteria process it.
18. Seachem's product and THIS SAND FROM PETCO are wonderful. The sand in that link ships in a bag with water and comes with tons of useful critters from the get-go. I have a hard time recommending tanks start up without this sand since it's difficult to reproduce what it does for your sand bed in such a short time (instant cycling + beneficial critters).
19. In terms of "photography," I like cmanning's shot! (but looks like I'm alone... lol)
