  1. My guess would be the sand. If it isn't messed with and doesn't have something the moves it around constantly, it can trap a whole bunch of detritus in it which then turns into Hydrogen Sulfide and other toxic stuff. Whet it gets stirred up, the stuff gets released. If there isn't a ton of carbon, or a near 100% water change it can crash everything. If there was any sulfur smell this was definitely the case, but based on your description, this would be my guess.
  2. No tumbling for carbon. If you have a media bag, you can just put it in a flow area as well.
  3. The nano cube is the pictures just above your post. The chiller pictures are at the top of the thread.
  4. Putting the JBJ up for sale. Here's some pictures of it. It's a great tank. Has 2 fan's modded into the hood. You may need additional cooling depending on your light cycle and room temp. $150 for the tank by itself. Will combine the tank and chiller for $300 OBO. Will need a pump and plumbing for the chiller. This is a steal for this tank with a chiller. Will hold with Paypal or pre-arrangement. Lighting: 150 MH (14K Phoenix) + 2 x 18W Actinic PC, + stock LED moon lighting. The Mh and PC bulbs are about 9 months old so will probably need replaced soon. You can grow anything in this tank with the intensity of the lighting. Stock pumps with split locline returns on both sides. Will throw in a Koralia if you want it. Do not have a wavemaker in this tank currently. Actinic only bulbs:
  5. Getting the cyano under control. Think it was just one of those transient algae blooms since the tank is still young. Here's a few updated and unedited phone shots. Just switched out the 20K lighting for 10K lighting. So far all the corals are appreciating it. This poor candy cane was on the brink. Could barely see any green and he's very slowly starting to come back: GBTA on his second lap around the tank... Duncans: SPS Frags: One of my Dwarf Morays. Gave up on trying to sell them and got a screen top for now:

    Free FW live plants

All gone. Will repost if I do another trimming in the future.
  7. This is really cool: http://camerasim.com/camera-simulator/ Haven't used the paid version but even the free demo is really cool. Definitely worth checking out for anyone new to photography. Really provides a good visual connection to functions on a camera.
  8. May have just been a territorial one. I've heard multiple cases of people keeping them together. I had them in my 8g pico for a while with no problems either. 2g is definitely a confined area though. Would probably make sure the shrimp are well established before adding the fish.
  9. You could do clown gobies. Definitely my favorite pico size fish. They shouldn't be any problem with them and the sexy shrimp in the same tank.

    Free FW live plants

Just stripped everything out today. If anyone's interested in some plants let me know. Plants same as listed above. Anubias will be for sale in a separate thread. Here's the after picture. I have probably 500 sagittaria subulata and 20 lotus.
  11. You sure its not a polyclad flatworm? Edit... Nevermind. Missed your second post. That's my guess for sure.
  12. 90 is a good size tank with good dimensions if you go with the traditional rectangle. Same footprint as a 75 but a little taller. A 120 is 48 x 25 x 25 which is a good one as well without taking up much more room. The 25" width is definitely more pleasing to work with. A 75 or 90 is actually quite narrow if you want good depth. Once setup the tank will be significantly easier to maintain, although it might be costlier if you stock it heavily. Also some things like treatment or dosing are easily taken for granted, as they can become cost prohibitive in a large tank.
  13. Still available. Would be willing to split them, if I can sell them at the same time.
  14. If you look on the first reply here, this is exactly what I had. http://www.livingreefs.com/these-t32244.html Not for me. Most of them disappeared. I still see a few from time to time. I have heard they can become a problem.
  15. That would be my guess as well. I've had some and they looked about like miniature metallic green fan worms.
  16. Having a terribly embarrassing cyano outbreak, so updates will need to wait a bit. The dog still likes it though.
  17. PO4 test is garbage as well. NO3 will give a different reading with every test even out of the same batch. Generally I think they're all ok for a broad reading, and far better than nothing, but I wouldn't base any scientific conclusion from them.
  18. Will lower the chiller to $175.
  19. The biggest problem IMO is the lifespan. From what I've read, some of the dwarf varieties are only a few months at best. Seems like a lot of work to have to continuously replenish them. Otherwise they would be really cool tank inhabitants.
  20. Broke toe on Friday, Ran a 5K in South Padre on Saturday. Looking a bit ugly right now.

Ouch. I cracked my pelvis due to a bad landing skydiving, was at a dance hall the same night. Liquid pain remover!

  21. I wouldn't stress too much right yet. Coral are fine for 2 or 3 days with a total blackout. Fish are fine indefinitely. I wouldn't get extremely concerned about it as long as you can get a replacement in a few days.

    Foxy

It's a Virgate, but was significantly more colorful than any other I've come across. Best algae eater I've ever seen as well. Ate easily 2 - 3 lbs of caulerpa recemosa in about 3 days. He's really missed.
  23. In response the dead fish at LFS's, if you get to one on a day that shipments are received, it's common to see some major losses. I know of at least one that gets their shipments every Tuesday. Not to say it's a guarantee that's what you experienced, but when you get hundreds of fish in a shipment, you can usually expect some loss. It's good to see that someone at that Petco is putting some effort into their aquarium section. That one especially since it's about 5 minutes down the road. I personally shop at independent local stores about 95% of the time. My biggest complaint with the super-stores isn't always the conditions, as they're sometimes very good, but allowing shoppers to buy whatever they think looks cool with total disregard for where the fish is going to end up. I know as a retailer, a sale is sometimes a sale, but I've seen some sales that are just downright unacceptable. I'm glad to hear they're taking interest in that as well. If a customer is buying an oscar and a goldfish bowl (which aren't large enough for gold fish either), someone should ask questions...
  24. Maybe I need to go back in. I've never seen any corals in there. Last time, there were some plagued blue and yellow tangs and a few clown fish. Every fish in there had some disease, although I didn't look close enough to try and identify.
