  1. Mission:
The goal of the Austin Reef Club Mentored Reefkeeping Program is to provide experienced guidance for "newbies" to the hobby. The idea is to record the conversation and thought process that one goes through when planning and constructing a new reef aquarium. This conversation and advice given are documented to enlighten others following along the process with the end goal being the creation of a well-documented build thread that becomes a series of de-facto lessons to future newbies on how to achieve a similar tank setup. As we lose mentors/members over time to re-locations or transitions to other interests their knowledge will be preserved, built upon, and passed along. We'll in effect be creating new hobby mentors as Mentees mature while trying to reduce the number of redundant questions that keep pop up as the club gains new members. The overall goal is to make our members more successful and better educated while reducing the number of mistakes they make (and hopefully therefore reduced loss of livestock).
Mentors are selected by the Mentor Advisory Committee with the goal of having several different Mentors specializing in different types of aquariums (hard corals, soft corals, predator tanks, dedicated species, etc.). Mentees are selected by the Mentor. If you are interested in being a Mentee you should contact one of the listed Mentors via PM to discuss establishing the Mentor/Mentee relationship.
While mentored threads can and probably will involve discussions of specific brands, products, and technologies, mentored threads are not to be uses as advertising or sale threads per existing forum rules.
    Mentor Advisory Committee:
There shall be five committee members. The Mentor Advisory Committee is responsible for nominating new committee members, selecting new Mentors, evaluating existing Mentors, and defining the requirements of the Mentored build threads. Additionally they select the winners of the ARC Tim Huyhn Memorial Scholarship each year.
Persons interested in being a Mentor candidate may PM any ARC staff member or Committee member. The committee shall use the following qualifications in selecting ARC Mentors.
    • Mentors must have been a Premium, Professional, Premium Sponsor, or Benefactor for at lest one calendar year from the date of application
    • Mentors must have a well-documented history or proficiency with marine reef systems, a history of open discussion, a broad base of knowledge, and a sociable attitude
    • Mentors must select an area or areas of specialty documented in their Mentor Biography
    Mentors:
Mentors are responsible for documenting their systems (present or historical) per the requirements established by the Committee. While Mentors may begin by documenting their own systems, the goal is for Mentors to mentor "newbies". Mentors will:
    • Create and Maintain a Mentor Biography page that describes when and how the Mentor first joined the hobby? Why did they want to keep saltwater critters? What was their journey to the present day (a brief summary of the various tanks they have kept). Any valuable lessons learned along the way (such as eels are escape artists)? Any goals/challenges they have?
    • Document and maintain a summary of their methodologies and processes used in maintaining their systems (may be in mentored build threads). Such as what tests they run on their tanks and how often.
    • Post updates in the Mentee build threads at least monthly, including all relevant data (planning and discussions for system changes, evaluation of the system, and photos of the system). Updates needs to have detailed explanations of the decisions made and options considered,
The intent of this documentation is for newbies to see the decision making process in choosing animals and in solving problems with the system as it matures. Stalled threads less than a
year old that fail to keep up with posting requirements will be moved to the "Tank Builds" forum or removed as deemed appropriate.
    Mentees:
Mentees must be paid members of the Austin Reef Club. They are responsible for selecting a Mentor and working with that mentor in the design, construction, and maintenance of their system. They agree to update their thread monthly, to publicly post questions and discussions with their mentor regarding the tank, and to work to share the knowledge they gain with others. If the mentorship ends short of 1 year the Mentee build thread will be moved to the General Build Thread Forum.
The 2014 Mentor Advisory Committee consists of:
    • KimP
    • ckyuv
    • JamesL

    Current Mentors:

    • Timfish
  2. So how are you planning on getting into the tank? I'm interested in the concept but am worried that every time I need to get in a deal with something in the tank I will have to remove a bunch of the lights. I worry that something will happen to them. If you go long way with them I can hook them up on pulleys to raise and lower.

It's been a year and a half now, I'll take some pictures and a video, moving them to work in the tank couldn't be easier, and the way I do it I actually still have light in the tank to see what I'm doing.

  3. This just happened on my last post. After writing a new topic and hitting post, it never redirected just sat waiting the whole time. I waited several minutes and opened a new window and the post was successful, but if people are hitting post multiple times, it would probably account for the double and triple posts I've been seeing.

Edit, it's happening when I reply to an existing post as well. The green status indicator just keeps spinning and the post doesn't appear until I refresh the page. This isn't happening when just editing an existing post.

Can you provide details of which OS and browser you're using? We might be able to start to identify the pattern. Thanks.

  4. DIdn't know the guy but still sad to hear. I am down to contribute. TY I can't do it right now as I am in class but can you pm me your paypal email address and I will send some money over tonight.

Details on how to contribute have been added to the first post of this thread. Thank you Ty for taking point.

  5. People wishing to contribute through ARC can do so through the store here. Search for Donations, ARC Helping Our Own (http://www.austinreefclub.com/store/product/65-arc-helping-our-own/). The default cost is $10, just add as many as you want to contribute. 100% of donations will be forwarded to Tim's family.

Additionally, we are looking at naming the ARC scholarships after Tim to commemorate his spirit of friendliness and "paying it forward".

I also have a large supply of frag plus for other Southies and I love the idea.

I would love to have Tim's family present the scholarships at C4, if we keep the frag plug idea "quiet" we could gift them with a small fish bowl full of the signed frag plugs then.

  7. Also, if they're open to having guests and friends at the service I know that many of us would like to go. We certainly don't want to intrude, but his family should know how much he meant to our community.

  8. I can't post pics cause tapatalk says I'm not signed in. When I try to sign it it says I'm already signed in. Any ideas?

I'd first comb the Tapatalk forum and see if that's a known issue with them. Sadly I have little control over Tapatalk related bugs, though I did get an email that there is a new version of the Tapatalk plugin out. I will try to update that before this weekend.

With most Tapatalk issues it is recommended to uninstall and reinstall the app on your device when you get such issues.

Latest version of Tapatalk has been installed.

  9. Hey guys.........I can't update my signature. The edit bar is grayed out, and if I try to type in something it doesn't do anything. Help, please?

Details? Browser version, platform (mac, pc, ipad, phone). Have you tried it from multiple machines/browsers?

Tried on my laptop Windows 7, latest version of firefox, and on my ipad/safari that was just updated. I get the same result from both machines.

Thanks Sherita, the screenshot helped. This is a known issue with the software and some settings that get cached on your machine locally. Can you try following these directions to resolve it and let us know how it works for you?

    http://www.invisionpower.com/support/kb/_/editor-toolbar-not-loading-php-error-in-editor-popups-malformatted-r15

After the upgrade to IP.Board 3.4 there's a possibility that the editor may have a PHP error in it, or have the toolbar grayed out. This is not a bug in IP.Board 3.4.

This is happening because in IP.Board 3.4 the editor got an overhaul. This involved changes in many IPS Editor Javascript files, which your users browsers may have cached. As a result the editor may be grayed out, or there may be a php error in the editor.

To fix this issue, please have your users (and yourself) clear their browser cache, and perform a hard refresh (CTRL+F5 / CMD+R for Mac) on your community.

Google has a great guide which you can link your users to on how to clear your browser cache, here:http://support.googl...en&answer=32050

Windows Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari or Opera

Review and follow the instructions provided by your browser:

    Windows Internet Explorer

    Mozilla Firefox

    Apple Safari

    Opera

    Details and alternatives

Effect of clearing cache and cookies: Keep in mind that clearing your cache and cookies erases your settings for websites. Here are some examples:

If you opted to have sites remember your username and password, they will be cleared from your browser's memory when you clear cache and cookies, and you'll have to sign in again.

Websites might load a little slower because all of the images and content pieces have to be loaded from scratch.

The tips above are something that should be done on a regular basis anyway to keep your computer running efficiently, it's easy to do.

  12. Just a reminder guys, please read the first post in this this. Please DO NOT post requests for free items here. If members have items they wish to give away they will post them here, but requests for FREE items are not allowed. If you wish to buy items you may post in the Want to Buy forum.

Members who see requests for free items can help out the staff by using the "Report" button at the bottom of such posts.

  13. Interesting. I have a MIG here at home and I suspect that even with a very precise nozzle, the resolution would be fairly course. All of the impurities in the actual welding create all kinds of pops and bubbles and artifacts.

Definitely a first round attempt, but as stated in the article progress can move more quickly after a functional prototype. I think that DIY or inexpensive metal 3d printers will be the thing to revolutionize manufacturing worlwide

  14. I'm going to bump this up. If possible I'd like to find someone in the Austin metro area. I've tried contacting "Prof", but he hasn't logged in since June and his message box is full. I know of Shane at Fishy Business, but I'd like to see who else was out there.

Rather than bump this older thread I'd start a new one. Prof is no longer in business.
