  1. It's a pain to have to take the whole panel off every time I want to check the skimmer or feed the fish. I feed my fish 2-3 times a day so the canopy stays open most of the time. Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
  2. How did we even survive that? It was complete Crazy Town! Looking back, I should have left it in the garage another month and done some modifications to the stand. I need hinges on the doors.
  3. I bought a 300 gallon tank, without fully planning it out, and then tried to unload it from the truck by myself. I probably should have gone with a BC29.
  4. I was wondering about how you were doing on it the other day. Glad you're making progress. Feels good doesn't it! Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
  5. Anampses Wrasses have very poor survival rates in captivity anyway. They often get their mouths damaged in shipment or refuse to eat for some unknown reason. Sometimes ones that do begin to adapt to aquarium life start to waste away like Pencil Wrasses. If you're going to get a status fish, then it has to be something that everyone knows is expensive. Gem Tang, I'm lookin' at you!
  6. ...Or you could turn your fish room into a night club! Oose Oose Oose Oose Oose Oose
  7. I'll be honest, I had to Google it. It costs more than my tank.
  8. What is your goal Mg level? I try to mimic natural seawater levels for just about everything. Here is the chart that I use.
  9. Looking good! I can't wait to get a clear picture of the rock work. You're lucky to have such nice friends.
  10. Emperors are hit and miss from what I've seen over the years. They're beautiful fish, but I can't trade my euphyllias for one fish. Have you thought about a display school or shoal? Since you already have the tangs then that might be your first choice, but there are others as well.
  11. True about the wrasse, but not all wrasse need sand. Or so says Ty. I'm still on the fence about it. I may order a bag of sand and see how things set up the first month or so. I do love the look of sand, white reflective clean sand. What I don't like is the algae that grows in it. I went an purchased some 1/2" PEX line to run through the attic for my ATO/AWC. Now I need some time to shimmy around in the attic and get it installed. That's true. Here's a list of wrasses and where they sleep. You'll be limited to lined, fairy and flashers but those are very nice as well. I would avoid Thalassoma, Coris, Pencil and Anampses species. Gomphosus are nice and active for big tanks, but they will eat small fish and inverts.
  12. The part that I don't like about bare bottom is that algae and coralline grows on it and there is no way to scrape it off. If you have snails then they will leave bad tracks all along the bottom of the tank. My opinion is bias because I love wrasses so much. There are very nice bare bottom tanks out there, but I believe they must be ULNS.
  13. Changing out 1 gallon per day would be ideal if you could automate it. It sounds complicated, but I'm sure you know how to do it. How will you perform sand bed maintenance? Since you're not going to vacuum, then I'm guessing you're going to stir and let the mechanical pick it up?
  14. I seriously thought about running water lines through the house for easy water changes and top off, but we came to same conclusion as Gig. We're afraid that something would find the line and chew through it. I don't see a problem running your RO DI drain line to the laundry drain. Right now I have two barrels in the garage; one for salt and one for fresh. The RODI drains into the water softener drain and the filtered product empties into the barrels depending on which valve I press. I like to vacuum my sand so I do water changes with a Python hose that drains into the yard. I hook the same hose to the barrels and pump fresh salt water back into the tank. It's more work that some people but it's not as much work as carrying buckets.
  15. Haha you guys are hilarious! I'll bring a bottle just to hang out and watch!
  16. I'm looking forward to seeing how it turned out! Did you order the full package with stand and canopy?
  17. Wow! That BA is a monster! Was it somewhere hidden or just didn't bother you? I'm crazy about Valonia, like crazy eyes with a twitch crazy!
  18. I plan on doing the same thing with my next tank, whenever that will be. It's totally worth that extra insurance that you'll be starting pest free. Is the acid bath safe to just empty into the yard or did you have to do something special?
  19. Congrats! It's going to be an awesome tank. What is your acid bath schedule going to look like?
  20. It sounds like you're off at a sprint! I look forward to seeing your tank come together.
  21. I've always liked your name. You could be a super villain in a comic book about reefing! SuperReef, volume 1 Madsald strikes again! What will our hero do!? On a not so ordinary day, in a city near you, Jenny Reefkeeper prepares for a daunting task... -BOOM- -Front Door Explodes Open- Madsalt: Not so fast! Everyone knows you can't do a water change without adding "supplements!" *Holds up a bottle of copper* What will Jenny do!? Hero: My reefer sense is tingling! Another fish store must be trying to sell 100 hermit crabs to an unsuspecting newbie! What store would be open at this time of morning? It must be Madsalt!
  22. Wow this is a pretty amazing thread. I wish I would have seen it before I purchased my reactor!
  23. Start-up costs. Deduct them from your taxes. LOL! Seriously though, Veni brings up a good but controversial point. The best way to find out what works is to look at a system that is working and copy that. You could ask the owner what they would do differently to improve the design.
  24. The Jedi looks even better now than in the pic and yes that is a red knobby Have you decided not to keep corals? The Red Knob Sea Star eats soft corals. No Zoa's, Paly's or Mushrooms for sure. They are also very sensitive to changes in water chemistry like the Duncan coral.
