  1. I've been dying for a magnetic float switch holder! I'm glad he has it! I'm using an autotopoff.com bracket to hold my switch. It works pretty well for me, but that magnetic holder would be much more precise. ATO is one of the few things my Reef Angel can still do. LOL! BTW, beautiful Naso in that frag tank!
  2. Pretty cool idea for that cuvette drier. That magnetic float switch holder is super pro! Thanks for sharing the website.
  3. Super clean build Dogfish! I wish that I had taken half the time and planning that you have. It really pays to plan it out right the first time. Going back to your evaporation question - I'm running about 375g total water volume, at an average temp range of 74-76 night/day, and topping off 20 gallons every 7 days. Good luck building the tank!
  4. Pretty good looking FTS! Love that stag with the blue tips.
  5. It looks like a super pro move Ty! I'm glad that most everything worked out. How do you like the closed loop? Are you getting a lot of flow out of it? All of the holes make me nervous and I've never had one before.
  6. Sorry to hear about the corals. When the tips die like that, do you normally cut them off just below the healthy line? When I don't cut the tips they grow algae over the exposed skeleton and look horrible. What do you do when you get RTN through the base of the coral like that? When I start to cut that much skeleton away I always end up with a lot of frags. I think it could be the bone cutters and maybe it wouldn't be so bad if I used a saw.
  7. I'm glad to hear it. I had to perform life saving techniques on the Regal Angel, who got his cheek spines caught in the net. There was also an emergency surgery on the Flame Wrasse when he got his upper teeth caught in the net. If only SOMEONE had cleaned out their bagging container! There was God-knows-what stuck to the bottom that that thing and I wasn't about to poison them.
  8. That butterfly was giving Isaac a twitch! The stars had to have aligned just right for him to get through all of those bags. It's a good thing the Emperor Angel had to go into the cooler anyway. Speaking of fish, how did they make the transition?
  9. It's looking great Ty! That tank is going to look gorgeous in the wall. Looking forward to seeing that baby in person!
  10. Oh, interesting! They added that "drop off" like a gigantic external overflow box. ServPro...like it never even happened. Those are some pretty healthy Photoshop fish. Someone deserves a raise!
  11. The Vivid Aquariums 800g incorporated PVC and an acrylic shelf to create a similar effect. It looks pretty good, but would only work if you had an acrylic aquarium.
  12. Because people have too much money and don't know what to do with it? I'm with you and I don't get it either. It looks like a circulation nightmare.
  13. I came across this tank on Marine Depot this morning. Thought you guys might be interested. The price is pretty steep for a 75g aquarium though.
  14. It's good to know that it's a negligible increase. The 150g that I was running in 2013 was going through 5lbs every 6 months using a similar system. I would set the bubble count on the CO2 and adjust the bubble count based on Alk/Ca/Mg test results. Unfortunately, I ran the effluent out below the water line and lost nearly everything. That was a pretty horrible day! Your tank is looking great at one year. Congrats bro!
  15. My initial thought is that you would go through gas at an accelerated rate using this method. If you increase the effluent to a steady stream, then it would reduce the contact time the lower pH water has with the media. I'm guessing that if you increased your effluent rate 100% then it would take 100% more CO2 to achieve the same dKH output. How much has your usage increased between the two methods?
  16. That's an interesting way of working it. I have a Reef Angel controlling my C02 with a pH probe and it would be easier for me to manipulate the effluent flow or gas input. I think that I may try to increase the flow to a light stream like you suggested and increase the pH switch to somewhere around 7.0 to start. If this doesn't work then there is always dosing! Thanks for explaining your system. It's nice to have a glimpse into how other people are having success.
  17. Are you aiming to maintain 10 dKH? You must not be carbon dosing, eh? If not, how are you exporting? I've always had trouble with my CaRx effluent drip rate. I probably have to reset it every 2-3 days when the drip slows or stops. My reactor came with a ball valve, but I installed a small needle valve to control the drip and leave the ball open. It could also be because my drip rate is 2 drops a second. I've tried to increase the pH in the chamber and increase the drip rate but had trouble tuning it in. What yours looks like?
  18. It's good to start over like that. I've done it every time I upgrade or move into a new house. The hobby is always evolving and it's not always possible to incorporate new features into the existing tank. I wish that I were more patient and done more work on my tank before setting it up. It would save time in the long term, but I didn't see the problems as problems until later. I've been leaning towards a coral QT lately. I don't mind buying one coral a month, but buying twelve at once makes me nervous. I'm sure there is some sort of psychological condition in there somewhere!
  19. Haha, I always thought you were just being quirky! You got quiet after the spiders and then BAM SPS colonies! I figured you were using the dew from a single ginko leaf and the energy of the universe. My corals need more than dew and universe juice, but I'm trying! I'm with you on the larger body of water and I'll never own anything below 100g again. I recently reaquascaped my tank and I have some good spots for an anemone. I need to trade or sell some of my stuff to make room first.
  20. Pretty awesome picture! I'm happy you're having such great success with the anemones and SPS. I'm definitely thinking about it now. LOL
  21. Thanks Seth. It is exciting like watching a car race and wondering if someone is going to crash. I think I have a good plan and keep parameters where they need to be during the transition phase. We will see.I really need to find some time to come look at your setup because your build is so tidy and I can obviously use some pointers. Looks like you have a pretty good start to me Your welcome to come whenever you like. Don't do it, it's a trap! Haha, good planning on that tank. I love the dimensions
  22. The travel is tough. My wife and I went through two years of deployments and don't want to separated again. The kids make it exponentially harder, but it depends on how many responsibilities that you share. If I were gone 4-5 days at a time, then she'd basically be a single parent without any help until I got back.
  23. Wow 2012 thread! There are people on here that I haven't seen in quite a while. I wonder how many have changed jobs since originally posting where they worked. I actually changed jobs two months after writing this. I've been with the Health and Human Services Commission for three years working as a Rate Analyst. I collect and audit cost information from Medicaid providers in Texas and set the rate that they get paid from the state. It's kind of ironic seeing this thread again because I've been considering moving into actuarial analysis.
