+KimP
Long overdue for an update. Things have been mostly great. Had a few hiccups with alkalinity, nothing major just some swings with minimal damage. Randomly lost a big birdsnest recently that took down a rainbow Stylo growing nicely above it. It's been smooth sailing otherwise. Right now I'm thinking of adding some fish. Probably wrasses. I ended up getting pics of the birdsnest as it receded. It went down fast! I did manage to frag a little of it. This is the first time I noticed brown jelly, and right before I pulled it out The stylo showing skeleton was completely white the next day. No other losses.
Popular Post +KimP
I should mention some basic things about the tank. It's still getting weekly water changes and has been for over a year. I had problems with cyano, mostly on the sandbed, for the longest time. It was mentioned to me that some other tanks were having unusual problems with io salt so I decided to go back to rscp and just see what happened. Sure enough no more trouble 🤷♀️ I don't know for certain if that was the problem (it was the problem) but I'll take it! Let's see... Haven't had my skimmer running in a couple years (please don't kick me out of the club 🙈), I still use the same old kessil lights, the apex setup I got fairly recently, still dose alk with the same old bubble magus doser and occasionally ca, sump is dark 24/7 and full of rubble, no filter socks, tank is fed 4x a day with an auto feeder dropping pellets, occasionally I feed frozen, mostly when I see the eel out. I think that about sums it up. It's really low maintenance which I need right now. It's been such a great tank. I've enjoyed moving some corals around lately so the colors look better. Anyway, here's some pictures! These look good on my phone but they might be blurry on a monitor. Now I'll find the fts to post

Christyef
Your corals look awesome! Can’t wait to get all my zoas back. What you described with the cyano and IO is identical to what I’m dealing with. I’ve thght about switching back to RS, and now I’m sure I need to. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I guess they changed manufacturing plants a while back and it just hasn't been the same. The price difference sucks but not as much as dealing with cyano. Hopefully you'll see the same difference!
Christyef
And something I forgot to mention was the bad residue build up in my water mixing barrel. The IO leaves a bad filmSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
victoly
Just to play devils advocate, I've been using IO (FOWLR right now until i get some coral in) but dont have algae issues, yet. I did however notice that my barrel does have quite a bit of insoluble junk at the bottom. The tank looks fantastic!

Maybe your tank is new enough and doesn't have the nutrients? Or enough light? Hopefully it won't end up being a problem for you.

While the majority of my systems didn't have any noticable changes when IO switched their manufactiring process, several did start getting new cyano growth at the same time. Kim's tank was the best example though. She had some problems middle of last year and had some bleaching and some dieoff and consequently lots of cyano. I started working with her and we had gotten it cleared for probably two months up when I grabbed a bucket of IO when she ran out of Read Sea. Within a few days of the first water change with IO a fair amount of cyano popped up and got worse week to week until we switched back to Red Sea after 3 weeks and we saw an immediate slow down and disappearance of cyano in just a couple more weeks.
Christyef
I switched back to Red Sea last week. Did a water change on Sunday and my cyano is noticeably less. Also cleaned my nasty mp40’s. The better flow may be helping some too. [emoji16]. My euphyllia are a bit closed. Not sure if that’s the new salt or the higher flow. It doesn’t seem too high, but it’s definitely higher. I’m sure they will adapt Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Bpb
It’s interesting you all mention this. I haven’t had a spec of visible cyano in nearly 8 years, and just recently I’m seeing spots pop up on the sand (it doesn’t bother me, just an observation). I use IOSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Popular Post +KimP
A new toy finally came in the mail. I've wanted a top down viewer forever! It's going to be a week or so until I have time to play with it, but I'm still excited it's here.
Popular Post +KimP
A little while ago I decided to try adding to my lighting. I've had the idea floating around for a few years and finally decided to give it a try. I picked up a used 4' T5/led hybrid fixture in excellent shape. I'm still using the kessils down the middle, in between the 2 T5 fixtures. It added light to the front and back of the tank, obviously, but it also added a lot of light to the ends of the tank, which is what I was after. Lights in the old fixture were only about 2 feet apart so the ends were really dark. Right now I'm dealing with the gunk that goes along with light hitting new parts of the rock. Not enjoying this stage but I know it'll clear up eventually and now I have space for more coral! Here are some pictures with the top down viewer: This setosa has a strange growth pattern. I assume it's due to the coral growing on the side of it. I've tried to frag it off but it came back.

+KimP
Things are going so well! I'm past the algae phase of adding the new lights and now I have more spots for coral. All the corals that lost color are looking great again and I'm starting to see some growth. For the past several weeks the sandbed is staying clean and my phosphates are under control for the first time in the life of this tank. Here are the pictures! I did have to wake the tank up to get pictures without glare, so some corals aren't open all the way. You know how they do.
