small update. added chalice last thurs, CUC on saturday, schrooooooms today. nem mooved out of his hidey hole.
  6. yea, but what are the numbers. "acceptable" really depends on perception and your target environment. some keep ultra low nutrients, some keep ~5-10 nitrate, some dont mind 40!, etc. basic stuff you need to check when something starts going weird is ammonia and nitrites. we always assume they are in cycle properly, but something might have caused it to break and restart. check phosphate, if its too high, things really dont like it. whats your salinity at? what did you use to measure it? do you run a skimmer or anything else for aeration? what is your top off water source? do you run any reactors? carbon/gfo/pellets/etc? what brand food are you using... etc. when was the last time you cleaned your pumps?..... basically... start from the beginning, assume nothing. aside from snails/crabs.. what other livestock do you have? i inherited that same light w/ my new 40g tank, ebay has the wifi adapter from 30-90bux. (i got mine for 45, gotta be patient and pounce). search for "fluval A3976" if you are going to buy a new light, dont go w/ a fluval if you dont have to... there are much better chinese black boxes that are a hell of a lot better, imho (i have a black box on my frag tank). i dont have any torches in that tank yet, but the mushrooms and chalice look ok... havnt seen much growth (only been about 2-3 weeks now). in my main tank, the torches and hammers love brs reef chili and polyplab reefroids. sometimes its better to feed smaller amounts daily, as opposed to the full amount weekly.

    280 gallon Build

hell, coulda been anyone ty, doesnt look that high for us normal height folks. I love the repurposed coffee table. plus lots of room to expand the filters later!
  8. i have a stand that used to belong to a jbj45 that cracked in leak testing. 20d 24w 27h not a perfect fit, but for the low price of "gimme a cheap frag or chocolate chip star or two to feed my harlequins and get it the eff out of my garage," if should do well has some water damage (from the crack during the leak test) some paint should be able to hide.
  9. the best trap i've made consisted of the mouth from this: http://bit.ly/2mcsLuX sewed into the side of this http://amzn.com/B0002565MA coke bottle never worked for me
  10. aip eating filefish are decent. i saw some in my overflow, that fish is ugly AF... was perfect.
  11. some questions... what are your water parameters? what do you dose, feed, and how? what kind of flow are they in? what lights do you have? how far down are the corals from the water level? do you have any algae blooms? do you have a health amount of coraline (its not directly related, but gives us an idea of the tank's maturity/stability)? help us build your environment so we have a better idea on what to try.
  12. how has @FarmerTy not responded to this yet. maybe he passed out.
  13. imho, depends on the size and accessibility really. i have a colony thats the size of the upper half of a basketball. i've seen a couple heads die off towards the back-bottom. it would cause more harm to move it around and deal w/ that vs letting it die off. if it starts spreading, then yea, you gotta do something. this comes in handy if you want to try and mitigate w/o removing: http://amzn.com/B007A3MBJS

  15. its possible if someone wraps it into an automated system... https://www.liveaquaria.com/product/4542/pinpoint-nitrate-monitor?pcatid=4542&c=3753+3940+3941+4542
  16. a little remote control tractor w/ a slotted sifter to pick up shells and such...drop it off into a little conveyor belt?
  17. some sort of refrigerated auto feeder- maybe load 100ml bottles of shrimp/additives, and it dumps it on a schedule, while staying cold all week long! paly mower- a suction hose w/ barbershop clipper at the end, to cut and suck, making sure the palytoxin doesn't become airborn I know others have more!
  18. if you ever plan on getting automated w/ a controller, wouldnt hurt to plan ahead
  19. if you have an apex, dct (grey pump) isnt compatible, try and get the older generation dcs (blue pump).
