  1. From the album: SW Tank

  2. Love the cedar. Are you doing anything extra to sound proof the stand and hood?
  3. Finally watched Blackfish last night after noticing it's on netflix now. Nothing that I didn't already know but very good documentary. Some of the scenes with the mom and baby orcas are tough to watch.

      It's definitely worth a watch.

Impressed with all the musicians pulling out of Seaworld. It's too bad really, SW could become amazing if they'd just stop breeding orcas and provide existing ones with a large sanctuary.

  4. I threw a maxijet in mine. I kept getting that slimy green algae all of the chaeto and the hayi that I have in there. Seems to be working a bit. It doesn't tumble though, just provides movement and a little surface agitation to the middle chamber.
  5. Pretty sure it's montipora spongodes
  6. Birdsnest have always been horrible for me. Doesn't matter the color or lineage. ORA ones have been no more hardy than wild ones for me. I've had entire colonies RTN overnight that had been in the tank for more than a year. They're supposedly less demanding than acros, but they are very poor at adapting. There was a study on seriatopora's and they take longer than any other SPS to adapt to new conditions. Once they start to go, it's difficult to catch it fast enough to save anything. I do have some that are still growing but it seems to me that it's important to match the lighting and flow parameters almost exactly when moving them to a new tank for best chances of survival. The 1+ year RTN'ing is really aggravating though. It's happened to a softball size pink colony and I also had it happen to a baseball size ORA bird of paradise and half of an ORA ponape which I was able to save part of.
  7. Long shot but if you find it's a pest and eats sponges I may be interested if you want to get rid of it...
  8. Need to borrow an Aqua Medic Fish Trap or another trap that can catch a decent size fish.

  9. What lights are these? Such a cool tank with all the tangs.
  10. Just found that I leaked 6 years worth of water changes when our stupid plumber messed up the toilet fixing it right before we went out of town.

Luckily it was an internal leak, but still thousands of gallons down the drain. Just got my utilities bill today and about fell over.

They may have a leniency on you if you can show it was a plumber caused leak and its been corrected before you pay.

I'll give them a call. I've never had much luck with them being lenient. They wiped out 2 of my fish tanks including at least $500 in discus and an entire fridge of food that super hot summer when they shut our power off mistaking us for one of our neighbors. Their response was that they're "not responsible for shutting off the power to the wrong address".

  11. I don't have any actinics, but I think i have a cfl fixture in the garage. Might hook that up and give my corals a break. what do you think? I would just back way off on the photo period then. Dont add new lights, it would just complicate everything. Since you're already starting to bleach, you sort of need to exagerate it the other direction. At 10 hours, I might even go down to 2 hours per day and see if the bleaching stops and reverses. A day or two of blackout probably wouldn't hurt at all.
  12. The 20K should be much less intense than the 14K unless the 14 was very poor quality or really old. I would back way down on the lighting schedule. If literally everything is starting to bleach, you may want to go actinic only (assuming you have some) for a few days to a week to let them recover and then slowly start adding the MH back into the photo cycle.
  13. You could just use something like teamviewer to login to your laptop through your phone and access the camera. There's also a bunch of security camera programs that allow you to login from a remote computer.
  14. I don't think that's what the topic was referring to ...
  15. First big question, are you certain your tank doesn't have a tempered bottom? Since you already have the tank you definitely need to figure this one out. Many off the shelf tanks will have tempered bottom panels which you cannot drill at all. Drilling is really easy to do yourself once you know you can do it. Get a diamond drill bit and use an electric drill on a fairly low speed with a lot of water. There's instruction on the internet on how to do it. I would anticipate about 30 - 45 minutes per hole on that size tank if you're being very careful. You can get glass panels and silicon your own overflow boxes. Total cost should be under $50 including the bit and the panels. Sump is another story. Would probably glue some glass panels in a 40 breeder. I'm a big fan of eheim return pumps. They aren't the cheapest but they last a long time and are very quiet and efficient. Both the hobby and the compact pumps are great pumps.
  16. Saw a big tank in a Tahoe on Anderson Mill on my way to golfing yesterday. Any ARC'ers setting up a new tank?

  17. Anyone have a PAR meter I can borrow for a day? Just want to get some baseline measurements on my tank.

  18. Anyone got a recommendation for guaranteed 10M/10M internet under $700 / month?

google fiber wont allow for business customers at first.. they plan on implementing a business strategy further down the line. Have you thought about not using a locally managed frame? and instead using colocated/hosted?

  19. Is it a BRS 5 stage, spectrapure, or another? Really depends on the model. Some of the high end ones with a booster pump are 1:1. Most are more like 1:3 or 1:4 with the larger number being the wastewater. Need to fill a swimming pool anytime soon?
  20. You may want to look at the cost of purchasing a Ro/DI unit yourself. If you're going to be mixing a ton of water each month for this tank, not to mention the 400 to start with, it's probably safe to assume that getting your own unit will be cheaper in the long run.
  21. Good = A BTA finally moved away from some nice ORA SPS. BAD = I don't know where.

  22. I would suspect the power supply.
  23. Pretty much every whitetail we've gotten here was 150lbs max. Back in Colorado almost everything I've ever seen was 300+, mule deer though. They definitely taste better here. I guess tree bark and sage brush for 6 - 9 months of the year doesn't lend well to flavorful meat.
  24. That might be pushing it for the little dog sized deer around here.
