  1. my clowns dont seem to share very well so i am looking for a carpet able to host a black o clown... what i think is called a maxi mini would work as I've heard they get up to 6" let me know. 254-251-1331

I may be wrong but I don't think clowns host maxi minis

  2. Last night as I was feeding my sump/refugium, I noticed that my little brittlestar and amphipod populations in there had exploded. The entire LR I've got in the refugium is now covered with waving, hungry brittlestar arms and amphipods running around grabbing pellets. I also have two BTAs on that LR, one recovering from being in my 20g and another recovering after it got sucked down through the DT overflow. Both have been getting pellets and seem to really like them.

On the other hand, feeding my DT anemones silversides hasn't been going well. It's been over a month since I did that, and the big, green BTA and my Purple Condy are still angry. I don't know if the Purple Condy is ever going to come back out of the rocks. It's hard to know the maximum size of the pieces I give them.

To me feeding is a delicate balance between my crustaceans not going cannibal and so much food that the water parameters go south and nasty stuff explodes. I was alternating days between frozen and dried, but now I'm skipping days in between. For example,

    Day 1

3 cubes Piscine Energetics (PE) Mysis Shrimp

1 cube Piscine Energetics (PE) Cyclop-Eeze

    Day 2

    nothing

    Day 3

2 pinches New Life Spectrum Marine Fish Formula 1mm Sinking Pellet Fish Food

2 pinches Zoo Med Aquatrol Spirulina 20 Flakes

1 scoop (~¼ tsp) New Life Spectrum Reef Micro-Feeder Formula

    Day 4

    nothing

    back to Day 1

I also add in some DT’s Live Marine Phytoplankton– Premium Reef Blend to the DT when I have it and remember, but I'm thinking about regularly adding that daily or every other day.

I tried Rod’s Food Original Blend a few times. I know lots of people had success with it, but it didn't work for me. My beautiful yellow Maxi-Mini got something from Rod’s Food Original Blend it didn't like, crawled into the rocks and died. That put me off Rod’s.

I have an oversized skimmer and a good GFO RX that appear to be working well, and I have mostly corallimorphs and softies with few LPS/SPS. The water being a little dirty is probably ok for my tank, but the cyano can start getting out-of-hand and the Valonia (bubble algae) in my DT is on the verge of being a nuisance (one little Emerald Crab isn't keeping up, especially since it prefers my Lobophora algae, which doesn't bother me).

    Thoughts?

BTW, if the mods/admin want to create a new Reef Food forum and move this, I'd be ok with that. shifty.gif

Holy crap. How many fish do you have to be feeding 3 cubes? I feed 1 cube a day or every other day and I have 7 fish with 2 of them being fat happy tangs.

  3. Olaggie, someone's supposed to pick up the pearl berry here around 9am I will let you know if it falls through, but the shaggy is still available

Sorry but its not gonna fall through!!! I'm about to be on my way. I will call you in about 30 min.

  4. BTW, I had a black ice pair about 3 years ago when they first came out. I had them about a year before I had a accident with my hand in a table saw and spent 8 days in the hospital. I came home to a crashed tank and dead fish. My mom and aunt was supposed to be taking care of the tank. I really loved those guys and they were the prettiest clowns I've ever had.

  5. Mr Cob,

Don't let the heat you are getting on this keep you from updating us on your progress. Lot's of people have opinions on this topic ( I do) but just as many of us are interested in your results.

If you decide you need to rehome some little clowns let me know!

Me too. I love my platinum and naked. I was hoping they would pair up but they have been together for about 6 months and still sleep in separate places. I would love to get into breeding someday when I have more time.

  6. What are the Asterina's doing that has you worried? Over population or damaging things? I caught one munching on some macro algae the other day. Removed him and haven't seen any of the others come any where near the macro in question. Matter of time until they do but...

Mine were so overpopulated on some live rock I bought from another member that they had stripped it of coraline algae.

  7. Different races and different species are a touch different...last time I checked nobody believed breeding a farm horse to a zebra would be an ok thing to get "cool" looking morphs with unreliable genetic basis, that you can sell for a quick buck. While a horse and a zebra are of the same genus, they are NOT the same species. Just as Amphiprion oscellaris, and Amphiprion percula are not. Breeding different species is not the same as breeding different races, just because they look differently.

Breeding hybrids is equally as irresponsible and detrimental to the hobby and to legitimate breeding, as slicing a living, functioning animal (for example, take an anemone) in two and calling it "fragging" is.

The function of legitimate ornamental breeding is, and should be, focused on maintaining and conserving a species.

Get freaking real. They are pairing and mating on their own. If they were somehow artificially inseminating them, I could see it as irresponsible. If they pair and mate, I would say it is pretty natural. It is hypocritical for you to even say anything about breeding, period. Its not like you are breeding to save a species. If you were, you would be giving yours away.
