  1. I am a Caribbean junkie. I have been to Jamaica 3 times, Cayman Islands, Puerto Rico and Cozumel 7 times. The last 2 years we have went to Cozumel 3 times for a total of 20 days. We already have another trip booked for august. People always ask why I don't try other places but every time I do, I regret not going to Cozumel. It is safe, very easy to get around the whole island, AWESOME snorkeling right off the beach, only a 2.5 hour flight, and it is really cheap to go in comparison to other places. Plus, it is a pretty small island and i already know my way around really well. I am a die hard snorkeler. The ONLY reason we don't dive is because I have a 8 and a 10 year old and include them in every trip we take. They love to snorkel with me and it is an awesome experience to share with them. I have a ton of cool pictures and I will start another thread for some when I have time.

  2. Thanks again for all the input everyone! After discussing it further with my better half, we are going to try to treat the fish in the tank with garlic, vitamins and the UV sterilizer. Hopefully this will help them build up their immune systems and fight it off. If there are no signs of improvement in a couple of weeks or it get's worse, then we'll probably move them over to a QT tank and try the hypo method. They are all eating and acting normal, so we'll just keep our fingers crossed.

That's what I do. Feed them a little more than usual and soak everything in garlic.

  3. I've got an rbta in my tank with two clowns and they don't seem to notice it. Of course it is tiny, about the size of a silver dollar. How big does it have to get before the clowns can host it?

Clowns don't always host. I've had clowns in tanks with anemones that never hosted after years of being together. They say taping a picture to the tank of a clown hosting sometimes works. I've never tried it myself so I don't really know if it helps.

  4. That is tooooo cool. I don't know anything about octopi. Are the eggs something that will hatch and able to raise in captivity? I could google it but I'm sure you've already done some research.

  5. The rules read right now:

Any tank under 6 gallons is acceptable. Any disputes will be settled by Manufacturers rated volume or measurements for DIY tanks.

And the sump must be less than 2.5 gallons.

I hope this is true because I already ordered a custom made 5 gallon display and a 2.5 gallon sump. Please let me know if this is acceptable. I thought it was said, before this thread, up to 5 gallons with a sump no bigger than 1/2 of display.
  6. That is the bad thing about zoas. They just melt sometimes for no reason. For me, I have found the best thing to do is just leave them alone. The more you move them, the more stressed they become. I've had some close up for a week and open back up looking brighter and better than they did before. That's not always the case though.

  7. They are brighter in person. Brighter than my 250 metal halides and 6ft super actinic. I will try out my lights tonight just picked up the spectrum I created. I'm a light hog so 3 would work but 4 is a glow stick. .lol

Cool, good to know. Thanks, my tank is deep as well

  8. Also timers at biglots are 3-4 bucks. Easy to fit on the budget when we leave or get home way after lights should be on or off....

I don't want to constantly have an uneven light time on such a small tank. The fish don't need the stress and algae needs to be controlled. Would hate to lose critters due to light being on to long and cooking the tank or growing algae... This could just be cosy defend safety if the tank and we shouldn't loose anything lol!!

I thought this was the point of the contest. To be able to maintain a small system without relying on high dollar equipment and really testing your husbandry and reef keeping abilities. There are tons of people who cant afford a apex and can keep a system just fine. If you cant afford what you need, you shouldnt be joining the contest anyway. No offense. Im not trying to argue at all and I hope I dont ruffle any feathers but I thought this was the whole point of the contest.

  9. so what happens if the pico light and such are hooked to my apex for timers and everything? I was going to use it to run my ato also.

You should have to budget for timers. That is part of this being a independent system and not fair for the people having to budget for it.

  10. With contest ending with C4 what if Mike allow all tanks to be set up at C4 and the voting could take place there? I think this would be a wonderful display of the awesome ARC folks.

I wont be around the weekend of C4 and wouldnt want to break down my system and set it back up only to break it back down and set it up again, anyway. If this is going to be the case im out.
