  1. I'd lean toward something like a Yellow-Eyed Kole Tang.

The hippo will outgrow the tank and the powder brown/blue tend to have a lot of problems with ich. The Kole tang is hardy and will help keep your glass clean, and is a lot of fun to watch.

  2. Welcome aboard! Tell us a bit about what you're looking to have in your tank? Fish, corals, anemones, you name it. The more info you provide the more advice we can give.

Also, you should definitely come to our meeting this month (August 18th, 3pm). The topic is nano biotopes and you'll get to see Teresa's nano setups to give you an idea of what is possible in your tank.

  3. I'd like to introduce our newest sponsor, Joe and his crew at

Apollo Reef LED. Apollo specializes in LED lighting for the common reef-keeper.

In Joe's words, "We are a down to earth company whose lights don't have all the bells and whistles that the Radions do. They are functional, two-channel dimming fixtures that are Apex, GHL and ReefAngel compatible (or can be controlled using our own Dimm4 Card, available on our website at around $100.00). Our fixtures have everything you need in a light minus the crazy cost. For example a 6' x 2' x 36" depth tank can grow SPS and clams end to end using only 3 fixtures and an 8' tank using 3 fixtures loses only 3 inches on each end for SPS but certainly is still fully lit. In comparison, using AI SOls would require 1 light per foot of tank (6 lights for 6', 8 lights for 8'). Our lights have 50% more PAR than the AI and nearly twice the coverage area." If you're considering DIY LEDs you owe it to yourself to see what your money can get you at Apollo before heating up your soldering iron!

You can participate in their discussion and ask questions on their ARC forum

here as well as watch for monthly coupons and sales. And remember, as an ARC Premium Member, you get a 5% discount on your purchases through their site!

Let's all take a minute to say thanks for their support!

  4. Lowes, Home Depot, and Walmart all sell DIY screen kits. You buy the frame, screen, screen spline, and a spline tool. Cut the frame to the dimensions you want, lay the screen over it, apply the spline that holds the screen in the frame, then trim off the excess screen. Should take you 30mins or less. Walmart also has several different screen materials, I prefer the small black weave which allows light through but is small enough to keep fish in the tank. Make sure not to get solar screen material as its purpose is to block light.

  5. The current count is:

Coralife: 13 (min count 10 to order)

Red Sea: 9 (min count 20 to order)

So, we need someone to add 11 Red Sea for that portion of the order to make or those getting Red Sea can switch to Coralife. Ordering will close at 9pm tomorrow so that Jake has time to get them.

  6. Several of our sponsors sell LED lights, I've found that the best way to see what you like is to go look at them. For example, Austin Aquadome now has quite a few different LEDs on display over a variety of tanks. Jake at RCA can talke to you about them as well since you're up north.

Our online sponsors American Aquarium, Champion Lighting, Get Pumped Saltwater, and Premium Aquatics also all sell LED fixtures

  7. I think a good time was had by all who made it down to the surf and sand. Special thanks to all the gang who attended the breakfast, bbq, and bonfire. I was really sorry to hear about Thunder, Dena, we'd looked forward to seeing ya'll there. It's great you were able to get him help so quickly though!

For those of you who didn't make it, or those who did but didn't get to swing by, I have 4 exclusive 1st Annual ARC Coast Trip shirts left, $20 each. PM me if you're interested.
