  1. A reminder that we have no validation that Jake's post was actually from a former employee and as such it was removed. There's no issue discussing the facts as we know them and having a healthy dose of skepticism but please adhere to the Forum Rules. That said, the director of the aquarium, Shaun, has made the following offer. With pending litigation he's limited in how he can publicly respond until then.

The Austin Aquarium has offered to host our club and to allow interested members to take a "back stage tour" to determine for ourselves what we think. There's a lot that can and will happen before then, but let's keep in mind that there is at least the offer of some transparency once their operation is actually running. I'm reserving judgement until then.

You can run a restaurant and give a health inspector the time to come by and your going to get good marks.... wait until he shows up unannounced to see the real hazards.

Yes, but if you show up and the restaurant doesn't have stainless steel sinks and all of the required equipment and licenses on the walls no amount of talk would convince you. It should be obvious if there are that many corners being cut.

  2. My tank has (8) 2' BML fixtures run perpendicular to the sides. Our kitten has decided that they are perfect for cross-training. Caught her standing on two of them and dipping a paw into the tank, where my naive clowns are used to taking food from my hands. We now have a battery of motion sensors attached to compressed air cans to keep her away. Along with my fear of her falling in, being unable to escape, and drowning is the fear of what effect a wet cat would have on the health of the tank.

  3. Are you able to opt out of ads as a forum owner?

Yes, and I believe that even if I opt in that only users of the "free version" would see it.

That said, we currently do have advertisements on the ARC site. Not being subject to them is one of the many benefits that Premium Members receive.

  4. I thought I would share this email that was sent to me so that you can be aware of the change to Tapatalk's advertising policy:

    Dear Forum Owners,

We are excited to announce that Tapatalk is going to begin testing a free version of Tapatalk and in-app ads as a way to help you make money from mobile traffic.

Moving from a paid app to a free app

We recently started to offer the Tapatalk app for free for iOS devices. Since we began to test the free version, we are very happy to report a significant increase in downloads.

    Testing ad formats

In the next few days, we will begin to test ad formats on Tapatalk. The ad formats will be integrated within topics, and there will be three formats; banner ads, app installs, and “Promoted Topics” (similar to Facebook’s Promoted Stories).

During this initial phase, we will be testing technical integrations. The frequency of ads will be very low, and many of your users may never see an ad.

You can view screen shots of the ad formats here

    After the test

We expect the test phase to run 30-90 days. At the end of test, we will have a good understanding of the performance of the various ad formats. We will also determine the revenue model, and we will retroactively share the ad revenue from the test period with you.

We are excited about helping you earn money from users accessing your forum through Tapatalk. Over the next few weeks, we will provide you updates on the test and will monitor and respond to feedback on the Tapatalk Engagement and Monetization support forum.

  5. I think a Pico sub forum in tank builds would be a good idea.

I like that idea, I could put my current build into it.

I prefer to keep the reef threads in one section since our members really do range across the spectrum of tank sizes. We currently have a forum specifically for tank builds here. Since this contest has ended it might make more sense to close this thread and start new topics back in the Build or Reefkeeping forums.

Having numerous sub-categories tends to confuse newbies about where the proper place to post is and doing so creates a lot of clean up work for the mods. The ability to add tags provides a further way to filter and sort content. The previous sub-forums we've created don't see a lot of activity these days (seahorses, lagoons, contests). In general if we see traffic trending to justify such a section or sub-section we'll create one, but we try to wait until we see a true need for it. I've noted the request and will continue to watch it.

  6. Yeah I'm gonna go order some pink.. err I mean black for my nano build

Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S4

    Haha!

I have normal pvc in mine that I painted black...it came out very uniform and looks nice now that my tanks been going for a while

Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk 2

I used the Krylon fusion on mine but it does tend to scratch off fairly easily. The appeal to me would be having the color throughout the pipe.

It sounds like if there were enough interest we could arrange a group order through our sponsor FlexPVC. Thanks to them for chiming in!

Thanks Mike hope the image above worked.

They work when I use the "Image" button and then put your URL there, don't just try to embed HTML tags. I'm not sure how you tried it the first time but 2 of 3 pics didn't post.

  8. Let me properly introduce myself my name is Tristan. Live in San Antonio but drive up to Austin from time to time. Meet a few of you people and learning a lot of different views and experiences with reef tanks. Just thought I should say hi and hope to meet you guys soon

I tried posting pictures but it won let me and having trouble uploading the pic from photobucket lol

    Welcome!

There's a thread for tips and tricks on how to do things on the board, as well as a thread to report issues here. If you can't get photos working after looking through those then feel free to add to the appropriate thread

  9. Read a few articles on Reefbuilders about colored PVC for your tank recently. I can think of times when it would be useful. They link to Pimped Out Aquariums for the following, take a look:

    Poa-PVC-2.jpgPoa-PVC-1.jpg

This is schedule 40 colored PVC with a glossy finish, no printing. It's diameters from 1/2" to 2" with larger sizes available on request. It costs a little more than standard white or gray with blue and red 1" stock running aprox $2.70 per foot, with sections sold in 5' sections. Special order colors run about 20% more.

They also offer the sevice to bend your pvc pipe to avoid having all sorts of joints in your plumbing. That said, If you just HAVE to have colored joints you can follow this tutorial here, Not sure about "reef safeness"

  10. How's the noise on these? I'm seriously considering dumping my vortechs as they're just too loud. This was my next choice.

It's a different kind of noise. The tunes have more of a click and woosh. The ecotechs are more of a whining whirr.

The tunze also has a dial on the power box to where you can adjust the current. With it full on my pump makes a distinct whirrrrr noise. With it turned down halfway it's barely audible and still delivers the wave I want.

Glad to hear you have it working Kim, how do you like it?

  11. I can't imagine the amount of grief I would have to take if I spent $200 on a frag. Obviously, Clint, being a single man, doesnt have to deal with that I suppose.

The magic number is 150. never go over 150.

No the magic number is 1500.

Single man? Dude I have a wife that doesn't work, one kid in full time preschool and another on the way.

    What you talkin bout Willis?

    Join the club.

Vic has another on the way? Man, didn't you learn anything?!?

  12. I've got a new, in box 50 GPD 4-stage Mighty Mite RODI System w/Membrane. The Mighty Mite D.I. is a complete R.O.D.I. (Reverse Osmosis) reef water system with four stages of filtration. This system is ideal for reefkeepers with a fifty gallon or smaller tank.

Sells new for $110, asking $80 (no trades)
