  1. I'd say your perception is pretty accurate. Most marine parasites can be treated, but affects on the tank and other occupants are the primary concern. Just about all effective medications for marine parasites can wreak havoc on your other marine occupants (crustaceans, live rock, corals, etc). It is for this reason that they are so hard to treat. Your best means of defense are using a QT tank for any new fish and only acquiring fish from reputable sellers.
  2. Not sure yet, we're having a Round Rock Express party with some friends that day. I'll have to check on game time.
  3. Yikes, sorry to hear that. How many more warnings do we have to hear...
  4. I'm thinking that you're having an outbreak, i've never seen coraline grow that quickly. It definitely looks like you have diatoms on the rock in the last picture, so I'm guessing algae.
  5. I prefer a few powerheads for surface agitation. Here's what I'm running on my 90g: my return lines - forced with locline, I have the returns at surface level to provide agitation at both ends of the tank Tunze nano wavebox - the waves provide quite a bit of agitation alone and I love the movement (2) Tunze 6025, (1) Koralia 1 PH - just to keep stuff stirred up and moving throughout the tank Three addtional powerheads are probably overkill, but I had them before I got the wavemaker and just never removed them. The more you can agitate the surface the better, especially as temperatures rise. It helps oxygenate the water.
  6. I'm in for some to use for my pico at work. Thanks!
  7. Small world, I lost my Yellow Eyed Kole Tang last week. Saw a large mucous blob at the bottom of one rock and when we investigated my serpent star was trying to hoard the body. We were able to net him out with most of the cloud around him but it was a mess. I would strongly advise for a cleaner shrimp or serpent star, they'd both be strong enough to pull the body around and maybe make it more accessible. My star is one of my chief cleaners in the thank. Since then I'm experiencing an outbreak of ich in my tank, something I haven't seen in over a year. Everyone is eating well so I'm just keeping up on water changes and feeding everyone. Hopefully he'll be the only loss, though I haven't seen my tiny mysis-eating target mandarin in the last few days.
  8. 9. Aw Hey Man! We should plan on a TacoDeli meetup so we can grab lunch. Good to see you are on the order! Yep, weather is nice and it's been too long.
  10. Beautiful nem and palys!
  11. MH doesn't necessitate running a chiller. I started off with t5s over both of my tanks and I don't think you'll be happy with them. I have a clone of the Odyssea fixture you linked to. Mine is th 48" version that has (2)250w mh in it which should be fine for your 125g tank (mine is a 90). If you want a 72" fixture that should be graet. The hanging kit at the bottom of that link is great, it let's you move the lights close or farther away from the tank to control the light, acclimate corals, or adjust when you get new bulbs. I did add a small fan to the end of my tank and I don't have any heat issues. Oh, BTW, Icecap has gone out of business. I've had their ballats and did some DIY work for my old canopy with them. I liked the ballast and product but would be a bit worried about buying them now since Icecap isn't around for warranty or servicing them.
  12. As others have said, BTAs will move to where they are happy so don't try to move them yourself. I wouldn't remove bulbs, I would leave them all in and cut back the time. Start with a about 3 hours and add back an hour every 4 or 5 days until you're back to 8. Also monitor the temperature, with that your change in tank and lighting the temp could be higher. BTAs will lose their color when they get consistently too hot or too much light.
  13. The anemone crabs also love the green algae that is sold in sheets, they'll take it from my fingers. Mine lives in my bubbletip anemone, previously he hosted a torch coral I had in there. Awesome little guys.
  14. Just continually measure your salinity as you add salt. Start with what you know will be less than your target salinity and ease up on it.
  15. Do a search here on QT tanks, we discussed them a few months ago. I have a 12g eclipse that has light and heater. You don't want live sand or rock in a QT tank, the goal is to isolate the fish so that they can be observed and proactively treated. Most treatments are harmful to sand and live rock. Get some pvc elbows and joints larger than the fish you want to QT so that they'll have a safe place to hide. I started mine with new saltwater. Since you don't have live rock for filtration you'll want to do regular water changes with new saltwater. I'm assuming you're having an ich outbreak?
  16. I've got the same setup on my desk at work and absolutely love it. I've got a tailspot blenny and elongated pseudochromis. Be careful with tiny fish as they do like to jump. You can put a piece of knitting mesh over the top for the first few weeks after adding fish until they become used to the tank. Also, you may start to notice a film on the top of the water because filtration is minimal with the included pump. I bought this one (spray bar) and it does a great job of providing extra flow and keeps the surface agitated, the best $15 I spent on the pico.
  17. I use noip.com. It's a program that runs on my pc and updates the website whenever my dynamic ip address changes. Additionally I route all incoming traffice to port 443, this port should be open for you Mark as it is what encrypted web traffic uses.
  18. I've got some softies you're welcome to, my colt coral grows like a weed.
  19. I'd be interested in seeing some candy canes and some time of anemone, maybe a clam. Some truly photosynthetic creatures.
  20. Howdy, and welcome. Tell us a little about your experience and your setup.
  21. Why not spend $10 and get a $5 square jug at any of our LFS? That's what I use for the topoff reservoir for my 90g.
  22. Awesome Kim! Love the black and whites the best, and especially like the reflection photo. Way to apply what you learned!
