  1. before you get an RO/DI unit, be sure you know the ratio of waste water to usable water. Due to a miscommunication on my part, I bought one that is a 4:1 ratio, meaning there are 4 gallons of non-usable water for every 1 gallon of usable water. i recently ordered an addon to the unit that makes it 1.5:1. I know you say, "well, I'll just water the yard or do laundry", but when you make 30 gals at a time, thats 120G to the yard/laundry....

    I bought this kit 199.00 - OCEAN REEF + 1 FIVE STAGE 75 GPD RO/DI from http://www.thefilterguys.biz/ro_di_systems.htm and

  2. I use two icecap 120mm fans, they were 50 each, but they work great on my 90G with (6) t5s on it. The fans come with temperature probes that I put near the lights. water stays below 82, typically less than 81. I'm sure I would get even better cooling if I placed them in the lid of the canopy rather than behind the canopy near the wall. Long term I too would like a jbj chiller, but 650 for a 1/4hp is alot.

  3. well, this is a good thread! I have a 90G oceanic "ultimate reef ready" and it has a large center brace (about 1 foot wide). I've always wanted to remove it, but have never really found a solid answer that says I can remove it. My uneducated opinion is that it was for the two removable panes of glass that came with the tank. oceanic never responded to my questions about removing it, so I gave up

  4. Well, thanks y'all, I'm glad I'm not the only nut! :) I'm in for the long haul it seems. Last night is a good example, I wanted to write down the t5 bulbs I had, and I took them off just to see the brands and types, and that turned into cleaning the bulbs, reflectors, rearranging end caps etc, when I should have gone to bed.

I did enjoy it, and while it wasnt "fun" per se, it does give me the feeling of accomplishment that its mine to do with as I wish and these creatures are dependent on me for their well being.

So to turn this into reefkeeping discussion, I have a 90G oceanic 48Lx18dx24T with 6 t5 bulbs, here is what I have for bulbs.

    Front:

    ATI blueplus

    Giesemann aquablue+

    ATI blueplus

    Giesemann aquablue+

    Giesemann aquablue+

    ATI Procolor

This is wayy to white for me. I would like to add one more ATI blueplus to give it more of a blue hue, perhaps even a super actinic?

  5. Ok guys and gals, need some advice. A question occured to me over the weekend, "what will I have to show for all this money I have spent on reefkeeping?"

I'm really considering getting out of the hobby. It seems that I have put all this money into my tank, but what does it get me? Should I get a car to restore instead? Something that I will have to show for the money I have put into it? I have spent well over a thousand dollars (at least) and in hind sight, I feel guilty for having spent this money on fish, corals and equipment when I could have spent it on other items for my kids, family, help pay my mom's bills etc.

Do you ever feel this way?

  6. these are 4 old bulbs, they are at least a yr old, but they work. I was gonna throw them away, but thought I would see if anyone wants them. Free. I work in RR and live in Gtown. Probly going to Imax theater tomorrow in Austin so I can meet you between here and there.

  7. You'll have to quarantine him in another tank, but the Mardel Marcyn products work very well to cure pop-eye. Dont pay attention to the packages as far as freshwater and saltwater go, a company person told me they are the same. Oh, try cating him with the home made trap, 2 litre bottle with the top cut off. Or, I have a pretty good size fish trap you can borrow.

  8. Howdy folks! I just upgraded to (6) T5 lights, so I dont need these (4) 46.5 inch 110w VHOs anymore. They come with the ARO ballast, cords, endcaps and reflector, ready to go. I bought these bulbs in August or September (I will find the receipt) and they have run every day for 7 hrs. I had these on my 90gallon Oceanic, but my opinion is that they just dont do the job for SPS. Mushooms, some zoos and star polyps, no problems though.

The light kit without the bulbs is $180, with the bulbs its $267 on hellolights. I have the (2) URI 10k Aquasuns and (2) of the Super Actinics.

Now for the subjective section of my sale. I have heard some folks say that these types of lights are good for 6 months. If thats the case, the color spectrum has shifted and they should be replaced. Some folks say they last a year, which would mean these bulbs have 6 months of life left. Seeing that I run them for 7 hours a day, I hope its the latter. I only bring this up so that you can make an infomed decision. I think the bulbs look fine, just not as bright as (6) T5s :)

I would like to get $200, but dont be afraid to shoot me a PM with an offer. The weight scale is not included.

  9. It was just mine, sorry. I thought those with incomplete or nonexistent orders were working with John at reefcleaners to get their orders straight? He was well aware that orders were goofed, but he didnt elaborate on what was being done about those other orders. I feel guilty now :)

  10. Well, I bought one from the filter guys. Jim about talked my ear off, answered every question that I had and I bought it right then. I sent emails to other companies and most of them just pointed me to their website. Russ from Buckeye called me Saturday, but I had already ordered by then. Unit still hasnt arrived though.

  11. I need to buy an RO/DI unit (new), and I'd like to know which units y'all are using out there. Also, if you could go back and do it again, what would you do differently, TDS? Pressure guage? Different installation method? Warranty times? Bad customer service

  12. *sigh* Why do these things always happen to me?

I spoke to Robb, either my order wasnt included with the rest of youse, or someone has my order mixed in with theirs. I have sent an email to John at reefcleners. Here is what I ordered:

    Order Items

    Qty Name SKU Price Total

    15 Nassarius Vibex 5554446 $0.50 $7.50

    11 Nerite Snails (Large) 10112 $0.89 $9.79

    30 Zig Zag Periwinkles 44444 $0.20 $6.00

    10 Florida Cerith 47745 $0.55 $5.50

Most people have "one of those days", I have "one of those lives"
