  5. Those are some really good sized tangs. How did you make a determination on the sex since PBT are sexually uncharacteristic? I hope everything works out!
  6. The backyard project is about 60% complete. I have about 1,000 pounds of river rock to dispense and then I'll be able to start on the brick work! I'm going to have to throw a party or something when this thing is finished . It's been 6 days since I installed the T-5's and everything is doing well. I ran the fixture for 4 hours for 4 consecutive days. After that it was run the full photoperiod between 11 a.m. and 9:20 p.m. Remember this Tricolor Valida? I fragged it up in a video posted April 11th and it's recovering nicely. I kept the largest piece and attached it in the previous place. The remaining pieces were added to frag plugs and I'll let them go when they start encrusting. ORA Green Elkhorn and JF Grape Juice Acropora - The acro looks full and bright. I'm confident that I can start adding more acros and they will do well. Duncan coral - I got this nub from a friend at the last club meeting. The polyps are slowly growing out of the base, but you can definitely see them now. It would be disappointing if the angelfish decided to snack on this after months of waiting! Gliter Favia - Love this coral. I wouldn't mind having a large dedicated rock fully encrusted with this coral. Mystery Acropora - This coral was very nearly dead and I clipped a tiny nub to try and save a piece. It's grown over the last few months to about the size of a quarter. It's amazing what life can do. I don't know the name but I'm very excited to see what it'll turn into!
  7. I hit the button once by accident and noticed that light coming on. My tester has a red diode. Do you think the color of light makes a difference?
  8. The color looks pretty good. It has a mostly 10k look in person. All of the LED fixtures have a different color and one side is really blue right now. I'm moving them around to get a blended mix. Sent from my Moto G (5) Plus using Tapatalk
  9. Tiger tails are nocturnal and normally stay in one spot attached to a rock. Sometimes they travel and can climb the aquarium walls. I had one get sucked into the return pump once and didn't nuke the tank. IMO the edible black or pink and black cuc is the only viable species. The Waikiki Aquarium has one in every tank. 10. The new lights are in! The photos are a little delayed because I changed out the hanging kits just to find out that we couldn't lift the heavier canopy over our heads and onto the aquarium! I wasn't happy about putting the old hanging kits back on because I thought they would shadow the T-5's a little bit. Oh well. They look a lot better in person than they do in photos. I think my camera does some sort of fancy auto correct. To be honest, they didn't add as much light as I thought, but they evened out the shadows. I couldn't probably move the fixture in a few inches towards the center to cut down on the light bleeding. Someday I hope to think of something to raise the LEDS closer to the canopy. LEDS Only LEDS + T-5's
  11. Average citizen? You're Mr. ARC!
  12. I've never used these products before and I'm not an expert on algae or bacteria. I was just trying to help with my meager experience. The Boyd Enterprises says that Chemiclean works on "many" strains of cyanobacteria, including red, black, blue-green, and methane producing strains. According to the instructions it should have worked. I couldn't find any examples online where some hobbyists have used it for anything but red cyano. I guess that's why they started marketing it as "Red Slime Remover". Vibrant looks very much like a hoodwinked shamcrockery to me. The hobbyists polls and posts online aren't great. About 50% of users said it makes them run faster, jump higher, and look more attractive, but the other 50% said it either straight up didn't work or they didn't notice a change. The product instructions include doing water changes, manual removal, and adding media, which is excellent marketing if you ask me.
  13. Cyanobacteria and many different algae spores are in our water in some form at all times. Starting with new LR can help if you're concerned with leaching, but it wouldn't stop the introduction of cyano, GHA, or other types of algae. I did an experiment in May 2017 where I used peroxide to remove GHA. You can read about it in these posts if you're interested: First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth. Peroxide as a coral treatment can be used with zoas, palys, mushrooms, leathers, and other softies, but can't be used on SPS or LPS. It will kill the bloomed algae, dinos, pods, stars, and worms, etc. but doesn't affect spores or eggs.
  14. It looks like Calothrix or brown cyanobacteria to me. Cyano and Calothrix are both characterized by suspended bubbles that are caused by respiration. It's similar looking to diatoms, but the bubbles gives it away. Here's what Reef Cleaners says about it. Calothrix These species of cyano often appear as a light slimy yet hairy/fuzzy nastiness that loosely attaches to your rock work. Air bubbles are usually trapped while eascaping the "algae", just like in the picture to the left. Calothrix is a type of blue green algae that looks very similar to Dinos. We have them next to each other in the guide to help you distinguish the difference between the two. Manual Removal - Remove the rock and scrub, and then fine tune with a toothbrush. Let the cleaners get the rest. It helps to use a net to collect the debris that will occur as a result of the toothbrushing. Starving it out - Use a phosban reactor or a macro like chaeto to take down phosphate. If you have a nitrate problem too, you can add more live rock or rubble to the tank, do some more wcs, add macro, add dsb, etc... Clean Up Crew - Chitons, Nerites and other cyano cleaners work well.
  15. Have you treated a display with prazi pro before? I'm wondering if there are any side effects.
  16. Unexplained fish losses are tough. Did you test ammonia by chance? Did you do anything the day before they stopped feeding? Maybe a water change, added new media, or topped off fresh water? IME very few fish recover once they stop feeding. Sudden drops in sg or Marine Velvet can kill within 8 hours.
  17. Happy late Father's Day! I like to keep it easy on the holidays and avoid the crowds. I planted two trees, four cactus, five shrubs, and 10 perennials on Sunday. I also tried my hand at smoking some ribs for the first time. The rub was spot on, but they needed another hour to completely fall off the bone. I didn't buy anything specifically, but I did order some T-5's that came in on Friday. I'll be trying to install them over the next few days.
  18. Good news and bad news. The good news is that the lights arrived on Friday, about five days after ordering! The fixtures look better than the stock photo and every fixture turned on during testing. It turns out the LED strips are actinic if I need any additional pop of blue! The bad news is that one of the bulbs came in broken and I need a replacement. I called LiveAquaria this morning and they are going to overnight a new bulb! The customer service has been spot on most of the time and I really love that LA has started selling dry goods. The 5% rewards on livestock and dry goods is an added bonus. I have the vaguest of the vague ideas on how to mount the LED fixtures. I found a picture on this random forum post and my plan was to attempt to recreate something similar. Unfortunately, the Home Depot near my house doesn't have the square conduit and (after hours and hours of searching) I found a C shape piece that I could use. It involves removing the current hanging kit, replacing the screws and attaching the new screws to the conduit. Then I'm going to use pipe straps to attach the 8' conduit to my canopy roof. There are three ways that I can think to install the T-5's. I'll have to measure again, but I believe the canopy is wide enough to place the fixtures end to end. I can move the LEDs back 2-3" back towards the overflow and place the T-5's fixtures in front, adjusting the reflectors to shine partially on the sand and partially on the rocks. On the flip side, I can move the LEDs forward and place the T-5's so that they shine directly down on the aquascape. Lastly, I can split the fixtures back and front of the LEDs either in the middle like the picture below. This will give me PAR zones to move my low light corals to the ends while keeping the higher light corals in the middle. My end goal is to keep 3-5 nice sized colonies of acros, a few stags, 3 stylos, 3-5 plating and encrusting montipora, 5-10 euphyllias, and however many colonies of cyphestrea and zoas that I can fit on the sand before it looks too cluttered. My angel hasn't touched the duncan or trumpet corals yet, but those may be future snacks when he starts changing.
  19. Thanks Jolt! Its been a fun journey learning how to take pictures with the DSLR. Do you teach any classes? I'm pretty horrible with my mirrorless!
  20. Butternut Stylophora? I've never seen a colony of it, only frags, so I'm not sure about the growth pattern.
  21. Cool way of mounting the lights. What materials did you use?
  22. Looks great! What do your nutrient levels look like to keep the sea fans? Love the tangs!
  23. I'm starting to get good coloration and growth, but it could be better. I'm hoping this is the missing link that will take it to the next level. One thing that I'm looking forward to is an even tone of light throughout the tank. Each one of my four fixtures is different enough that I can't match them up perfectly and the light changes in each zone. A light with a digital controller would help match the color and that was the driving factor to replacing the existing fixtures.
  24. Sorry, but I can't name names to protect the privacy of my source. Are these the T-5's you ran with your MH setup? Did your fixture look like one of the stock photos? I'm curious whether the LED's are removable. It looks like they're just slapped on there as an afterthought.
