    Current IC Pro, Aqua Illuminations, Kessil and Ecotech manufacture rear mounted arms for their fixtures. Some companies make universal mounts that you can use with any fixture. I've been seeing a lot of people the last couple of years start making DIY mounts for their fixtures. It's primarily motivated by the lack of hanging options with cheaper lighting fixtures. I ran the OceanRevive lights for five years and had good success with them. Another light that I've heard good things about is Viparspectra. Both come with built-in timers, but you'll need a way to mount them.

    Do you mean that you would like to avoid hanging lights from the ceiling or using legs on the rim of the tank?

    Definitely possible. I haven't added any new equipment, but a pump or something could have shorted out. I don't get shocked when I put my hands in the tank, but I haven't tested it. From what I've read in the past, every piece of equipment touching the water leeches a small current in the aquarium. Any idea how much is too much?

    Hey everyone, I hope that you all had a great holiday. Mine was nice and quiet, a little too quiet! I guess I've been busy so long that it doesn't seem normal to have down time. I'll have to admit that Black Friday and Cyber Monday were disappointing this year. I normally wait months for the discounts and I didn't see anything special this time. Where's the grandness of the holidays? Thanksgiving is all about excess and these companies run 15% off sales routinely. Sadly, I didn't buy anything fancy or exciting. I found a 50% off deal on salt mix and bought a year's supply. I also got some routine items, like RODI filters and Hanna reagent. A strange thing happened with my fish over the holidays. I don't know if it's the new lights or the fact that we were home all day, but several fish jumped out of the aquarium. I've had some of these fish for years and it's strange behavior. I ended up losing my prized Dusky Wrasse, a Cleaner Wrasse that ate everything, the new Blonde Naso Tang, and Convict Tang. I guess I'll have to work on covering the back of the canopy after reworking the return and drain lines. Disappointment doesn't even begin to describe it.

    Snapped a few pictures before heading to the dentist for voluntary torture. I found this PBT about a month ago at Aquatek. Total impulse buy, but it's working out great! Reef Raft Nauti Spiral - I've had this coral for over two years and broken it twice, one on accident. It's turning a nice shade of red with a pink rim! JF Grape Juice - Survive two of my crashes and now it's really taking off. Green Slimer - One of my very favorite corals. When it gets a little bigger I may even propagate it to another spot on the opposite side of the tank. In the foreground you can see my Tyree Rainbow Stylophora as well, although out of focus.     IO ranges from $38-41 on Ebay and there's no tax until the feds mandate it. They regularly send out coupons for 10-15% off as well. It's not as cheap at this deal but it's something to keep in mind. I normally buy a year worth of salt mix on Black Friday.

    I agree with Sierra Bravo. The sg has probably been creeping up over time with each water change. I personally only check salinity twice a year when I do a full check of water parameters or if I think something is amiss. I believe the danger in changing salinity is highest when increasing and decreasing isn't very risky. I would remove a gallon of tank water every 5-7 days and replace it with fresh RODI until the issue is resolved. You could probably do it faster, but there's no reason to take unnecessary risks.

    FWIW the people that I see having success with Harlequin Shrimp feed them a live Chocolate Chip Starfish once a month. From what I've read the babies can be reared on asterinas, but the adults will need linkia or similar starfish. Most people use chocolates because they're cheap. I don't know what "baby" means when the adults are only 1.5"! Pretty much everything eats shrimp, so both scenarios are viable.

    Welcome! Shrimp and other molding invertebrates are known to go missing for 2-4 days during a molt, but two weeks seems excessive. I once had a Peppermint Shrimp disappear for three months and reappear triple the size. Harlequin Shrimp are known to carry off starfish or urchins into a cave and feed on them for up to two weeks before emerging. I don't know how long you've had your shrimp or if that's normal behavior for your specimen.

    I added a few $5 tester pieces last month to see what he might think is food. I've heard they really start sampling everything when they begin changing into adult colors. The zoa's and paly's were definitely food. He didn't touch them for a few weeks and then all four plugs were cleaned in a sitting; around 4-8 polyps per plug. I've had mushrooms and rhodactus in the tank since I've had him and he hasn't touched those. I'm pretty sure he sampled my purple torch yesterday. He hasn't touched the trumpet coral or duncan yet, but I've heard they often eat those. I'm also fairly certain that he has a taste for one of my favia that's been largely closed for two months. He's alive! Haha, that was my favorite movie as a kid too! Still hate that sheriff!

    Level zero! I love it! I would start with these and ask questions as they come up. Also, browse the build threads, find a tank that you like, and find out how it works. The loudest voice doesn't always have the right answer and there are many ways to get to the same result. The trick is to find what works for you, your lifestyle, and your goals.     Caulerpa reproduces by going sexual and releasing spores. The spores then attach themselves to surfaces and can live for a long time without germinating. You could remove the rock, but that doesn't mean there aren't more spores on other rocks or within the tank. Caulerpa is also known to grow in the silicone seams and on or around equipment. The same property makes fighting Valonia very difficult and people often have to nuke their live rock to get rid of the plague. If it were me, then I would start with manual removal. This type of macroalgae attaches to the LR using a root structure and you can scrape it off easily. Try to get all of the roots if you can. It's easily controlled as long as you don't let it go sexual.

    +1 looks like Feather Caulerpa to me. You can read about them at Marine Plant Book. I used that site a lot when I was doing lagoons and the information is accurate, as far as I can tell.     @Christyef It's good to have friends! I wasn't considering Radions because I didn't think they could be so much better than cheaper lights. It's a good surprise even though the software is troublesome. I have a USB extension cable that I use to connect my Reef Angel to my computer and it came in handy for this as well. I actually didn't adjust the colors myself. I used the 18k setting in EcoSmart Live. Click on Live Demo and then Presets. It's pretty awesome because it changes the light on your aquarium as soon as you click it. I adjusted the brightness higher and set the acclimation period to one week. It's at 30% intensity right now and it will go to 45% at the end of the week. @Jimbo662 Thanks! I'm mostly being lazy. It's deceptively easy, but I have trouble making decisions lately. It's a simple BeanAnimal drain with an internal overflow box going straight to the sump. I decided to reduce the 1.5" drains to 1" flex to cut down on noise and I'll make the return from the same stuff. The sump has been cryptic for the last three years, but I'm thinking of going back to a lighted refugium. I've been toying with a few different ideas on how best to do it.
