  7. Aquatek used to give loner jugs with purchase of water for initial set up, so long as you return them w/n 24 hrs. Call ahead & confirm they are available.
  8. One serious mobile home and pack rat. Did you find the zoas?
  9. Great start here. We let our little one (3yr old) share in finding new things as well. So far he picks good fish.
  10. Have to agree with mcallahan. Dead rock is the best way to start. Yes, It takes a bit longer but will save you the stress and headache of trying to remove unwanted critters & pests down the road. Not to mention avoid a lot of the stress of massive die off. You also have more room for sculpting your rock structures dry. You can drill or bond the rocks together. We use a 2 part epoxy you can order or pick up at any LFS. I then press dry rock chunks & sand into the surface. This helps hide all the joints as well as allow for Coraline to bond later. You can then add / seed select pieces of live rock to help start the Coraline algae once you get your sand & water settled out. We have even made several additions since the start. You can check out pics of our tank to see an example: http://www.austinreefclub.com/topic/11491-new-fish-44-gal/ Good luck.

  16. Aquatek will have their big sale next weekend (aug 28th) check their sponsor link in the forum for details. "Tunze equipment 10% OFF" We are using the Tunze nano 9002 (rated for 75g) for our 45gal. It is internal mount and takes very little space but comes with the internal pump. It runs super quiet and very efficiently. It was listed for around $160 retail which is much the same to some online suppliers. If you decide to go, get there early. But not sure about any other local sources. You can always post on the "want to Buy" section. See if you get any feed back. Cerith snails work great on the brown diatoms. Nassarius do stir the sand bed more like "bulldozers" but they are carnivores so they will need to be fed. Some blennies, like tails spot or lawnmower will eat the algae, but be sure you know which ones are reef safe and what your size limitations are for your tank size. Lawnmowers need lots to keep them sustained. We have a tailspot, he is eating both hair algae and flake food as well. Between the skimmer and the Blennie we are starting to find a good balance with algae & tank inhabitants. Good luck.
  17. Here is some of what we found from our trials with Ich. Ich is much like the common fish flu. If a fish is weak or low immune it can develop Ich very quickly. Once they have it they will always carry it. Inverts don't normally contact it. Yes it does live in the substrate for as long as 6 weeks even in a tank without any fish to host on. If you choose to treat with copper you will need to quarantine the fish. Copper is toxic to inverts and Corals. It should be in a clean tank without sand or live rock. That away the Ich will not have anything to hide in when they drop off the fish each night. PVC plumbing pipes can be used as shelters. Frequent water changes and siphoning the bottom for detritus helps. QT tanks get very dirty fast and watch you chemistry to keep the water optimum. But it's all still a gamble. The stability and immune system of the fish is a big factor in them beating the Ich. Not to be a downer here but we've had little success with the copper Ich treatments and our clown fish. Some suggest freshwater RO dips for a short time. It changes the Io-somatic balance (i think that's how you spell it). The Ich can't survive it very long in it. But not all ich will drop off. Slime coat may boost their natural defenses against the Ich, but again depends on the fish. Check out other web resources like WetWebmedia for more information on Ich. They have large resources on a great deal of Aquatic life, habitats, and ailments. http://www.wetwebmedia.com Good luck.
  18. Chad and the other gave some great advice. Motion sensor lights are the simplest solution... with an off duty officer friend waiting around to help. If this person is repeating his aggression of sorts then they are doing it to get some sort of reaction from you and your family. Use extreme caution, I would advise you not to wait for them. Generally, if the perpetrator is doing something to get a reaction, they won't think much past a bit more violence towards you to save their bacon if you corner them. My dad was a life long officer. We had someone coming up to the house on his duty night when we were kids. The trick was they knew our dogs so the dogs didn't usually make a fuss. Living in the old south (Louisiana) there are always lots of solutions to share. A very large rat trap set up in the area of the window they liked to peep. But if their are any usual wild animals & rodents this can have and adverse effect. Good luck and be safe.
