Carrie
What is the most efficient (and harmless to the mantis) way to remove a two inch mantis that lives in a live rock? I saw commercial traps, are they effective? Thanks, Carrie
barderer
if he is living in a rock your best bet is to lift the rock out and wash him out.
diabeetus
yeah, when you put your hand in there or if you see him in the rock, he wont come out if you pull the rock out, but after you pull it out, he is stuck there until you get him out yourself. good luck. i used to have one. pretty fun to watch. two inches isnt very long, is he even doing any damage in the tank? mine never bothered any fish. killed an occasional hermit, but thats it. Zarathustra2
Take the rock out. Put the rock in some RO water until your mantis vacates the premis. Re-cycle that piece of rock in another bucket. Drop the Mantis in another bucket with saltwater. Trade it in the LFS for a few bucks if it is pretty. cmanning
If you're tank is not acrylic then I would try to get him out of there. If you have an acrylic fish trap you can probably place a piece of krill and draw him out and capture it. Also taking the rock out and placing it in a bucket will usually drive out any critters even fish, then be ready to pull the rock out of the bucket and add some tank water. You'll be ready to transport to an LFS if the store wants to keep it. Good Luck, -Cindy-

I don't know about mantis shrimp, but if you put most other shrimp in RO water even for a few seconds, they go into shock and die almost immediately. Perhaps high salinity water would be better.
