    PH

with all the recent posts on PH i figured that i may give this question some life. My PH has been swinging from 7.85 in the morning to a high of 8.1 in the evenings. i would ideally like to see it closer to 8.1 in the AM and 8.3 in the PM. though i imagine the first question should be. should i even bother considering the stability of the alk and calc. calcium stays at 420-450 and alk at 11dkh. i am inclined to leave it alone. I do run a reverse photo period in the sump. I dose Randy's 2part (recipe 1 for low ph systems) with a dosing pump running 20ml/hour from 11pm to 11am - that seems like a lot doesnt it? thats about 8 ounces per part per day, but the tank eats it. I top-off with a tank of RO/DI and Kalk, mixed every 8 hours with a powerhead and topped off as needed by float valve. I have tried to feed the skimmer air from outside of the house without an appreciable effect. 55 gallon (shallow) tank phosban reactor tunze skimmer 2x 150 MH w/ Phoenix 14k 1/3 hp chiller set at 79 controlled with a Medussa 2 stage controller Am - 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 0 Phosphate <5 The tank is heavily stocked with fish, corals, and inverts and i feed pretty heavily twice a day with a homemade Borneman type recipe. I have considered adding some airstones to the sump or reducing the calcium level. or........?? What would you do?
  2. i will have some metallic blues with red skirts ready to frag in a few weeks also some Red PPEs there have been nice ones here lately http://thelogicalreef.com/index.asp , but they go fast.
  3. glad you got it going EJ. all of your considerations are sound. i like the 'luck favors the prepared' quote. i believe the best cautionary plan would be a combination of setting the overflow box low enough to accomodate the volume of water in the return side of the sump and a float switch placed to shut off the pump when the water gets too low. IME the mag pumps do not fail or seize and burn up when half submerged and sputtering for as many as a few hours but 'luck favors the prepared'.
  4. here is another mag pump if you are looking. http://www.maast.org/index.php?name=PNphpB...ewtopic&t=20186
  5. i forgot to tell you that part. feed a length of air line up to the top of the J-tube bend. position the air line so that the end is at the top of the J-tube or (better yet) just past the top, feeding from tank side to overflow side. put tube in place. fill the center of the overflow so the tube is submerged on both sides. suck the air out of the j-tube thru the air line. when all or almost all of the air is gone from the tube the siphon will start. pull out the air line. if an air bubble is left at the top of the tube it might be drawn thru the tube with time. if the bubble is too big then repeat the above until it is free of air. then do the same with the second tube.
  6. john, is this the order from tom? or another one? robert
  7. most sea bass get really big!! go easy on the bass.
  8. I discussed this with a guy from BuckeyeFieldSupply a while back. He explained to me that DI (mine has a ph of 9-10) is considered by some to be too caustic for consumption in that it may contribute to the thinning of tooth enamel. drinking water should be tapped before the DI resin and after the RO membrane. 7.0 is a neutral PH.
  9. ej, when you glue a joint, prime both pieces, then put glue on both pieces and then twist the joint 45 degrees and back to where you want it. it then will not leak.
  10. yeh, stop all alk, calcium, and ph supplements as you bring the dkh down. you have to dilute the minerals presently in the tank. use straight RO for top off.
  11. come over and i will give you some Tropic Marin Pro for the water changes. i believe the Alk is around 7-7.5 on this salt becauses it is designed for use with kalk and calcium reactors.
  12. hey there Drew, you are pretty much limited to water changes and waiting with alk. stop all supplements until it is back where you want it. I cant remember which tank you are having trouble with. water changes should take care of the nanos should work pretty fast. three consecutive days of 25% changes in the 20 should get it pretty close. good luck robert
  13. yeh, come to think of it, i have never seen anything eat it.
  14. thanks john, i can help diesel, drop me a line robert
  15. great idea, i will save some. all true it does grow very fast, and does go sexual on occaision, but not too much. if it is kept pruned it does not go clear very much at all. it does flower. it is easily controlled by pulling it up by the roots. it does not come back from the "roots" but only by sending out runners. it does like a fine sand bed. seahorses love it.
  16. those look great Ace! did you happen to chronicle the building of...?
  17. nice Mojo, it is great for wax, wood or metal work. you will love it. they are much easier to control than a dremel. i used mine to make wedding rings for my wife and i.
  18. yep, that's the one. thanks i have been trying to remember the name.
  19. i need to weed this seagrass. does anyone want some?
  20. hello chris, welcome to ARC
