  1. nevermind - my salt did not make it to austin today. good excuse to go see RCA i suppose.
  2. does anyone have a nice strain thats ready for fraggin?
  3. i have read that leathers are particularly potent in the chemicals that they release. all (most?) corals will release chemicals that dicourage other species from invading their space and this chemical can effect neighbors downstream. Zoas are pretty tough though. what are your zoas doing? what do they look like?
  4. i beleive most corals will have some chemical weapons but the leathers can be especially potent. btw, i decided to move my tube anemone to another tank because it was stinging my corals (another extremely potent sting). so i dug the sand out from around him and started out by trying to gently remove him from the sand - nothin - then i got my fingers deep down 4 inches into the sand and i could not find the end of him, sand is almost 6 inches at this spot. eventually i tugged so hard that about 6" of the tube tore off in my hand. i figured that i either got him or killed him. so i placed the torn piece of tube in the other tank and forgot about him. the next day i went to look at the tube and it was still just a flat piece of slime. oh well. i looked in the tank that i had pulled it from and there he was all open and smiling at me. i think it must be attacked to the bottom of the tank. i dont think there is any way i am going to get him until i change tanks in about a month. evidently these things are either alive or dead, they dont seem to suffer much in between.
  5. what about nitrate nini. anemones are really sensitive to nitrate levels. from my experience they will not tolerate levels above 15ppm for long. i would check that, but otherwise dont bother it much. some will remain closed for hours esp in a new tank with clowns messing with it. give it some time.
  6. how mature is your tank nini? are nitrates consistently low? and what is your lighting (sorry i cant remember)?
  7. excellent id site, thanks john.
  8. ****, if it were only saturday.
  9. i have some coming at AA. never been to RCA, but i've been hearing good things. i will have to get my passport out and make that trip soon.
  10. dont know. i have a lot of fan worms in the sump and none in the display, but i have always thought the Coral Beauty has kept those mowed down. could be the peppermints though.
  11. hey mike, where do you get it? locally?
  12. another vote for the pepperment shrimp. sump is full of aiptasia, display is free of aiptasia. i have kept peppermint shrimp in there for about a year. sometimes i think they have all died but they show up again. bonus, they are always producing eggs that their tank mates find very tasty. i finally added one to the seahorse tank as i tired of aiptasia hunting and surprise! no aiptasia. get'em. I have heard that the Golden Coris Wrasse, (which is not really a coris) will eat the flat worms. clint - get 2-3 of the peppermints, they are great night time scavengers and will keep the tank really clean. i read only one account of them hassling clams, i have never seen this repeated anywhere though.
  13. dylan, if you cant get the ammonia down quickly through H20 changes. you may put the fish in my holding tank.
  14. I am going to give it a try and have a 200g bucket coming this Saturday. I'll split the bucket if anyone else wants to try it too.
  15. i had the same trouble with my reeflux 10k Clint. i tried it on every ballast that i had. it finally did fire and has not failed to fire since. i think they require more initial charge to start, as it wasnt until i left them on a timer that they fired properly. XM and ushio will fire on my ballasts alot earlier than the reeflux. i like the bulb though.
  16. thanks joe, good meeting you too. its nice to have more south austin reefers.
  17. oh, btw - i have a refractometer that you may borrow laughing9.gif
  18. does anyone carry lockline parts in Austin? i need a 3/4" threaded joint.
  19. it wouldnt be near as pretty that way crybaby2.gif
  20. i'll help you fellow south austinite. i will be out of town tomorrow - wednesday so pm me later in the week and i will give you my number. robert
  21. chances are that he will find a place that he likes and that is visible to you as he will seek out a location with ideal flow and lighting. dont try to relocate him by force but you may incourage his choice by directing current into places that you dont want him to be. usually they do not tolerate direct current yet prefer the current to pass near by or across them. if he is clear and white then he may have bleached (expelled is zooanthelae). if so feed him small amounts of chopped seafoods and/or mysis daily until he regains his color. hth robert
