    Want to trade?

Do you have any fish that may be picking on it? There are a bunch of fish that attack worms such as feather dusters. That would explain why the other corals and such are normal and the worms aren't.
  3. I know a bit about heat sinks, but none of the other stuff. A heat sink is simply a device, such as a slotted block of metal, that disipates heat. They are most commonly used on computer processors. If you get your computer back from jsr he can probably quickly show you the heat sink. The only type I've seen with lights are small fans(which aren't really 'heat sinks' but commonly accompany them). A standard ballast will have slotted metal on the outside of the casing. The slots provide more surface area for cooler air to pass over and absorb/disipate the heat.
  4. The koralias are not good on timers. I have my maxijets on a timer, but the koralia stays on all the time. The propeller is not secured to the shaft it spins around, so when they turn off the propeller tends to slip down. Then when they turn on the propeller is shifted back into place by resistive force and that makes noise and can possibly damage the unit. I'm going to experiment with using a small coffee straw to hold the propeller in place when it's off. I will let you know if that solves the problem. It could be an issue with the strength of the magnets, so I'll keep you posted.
  5. This was sold to me as a Newtoni Wrasse. I don't think it is one since the colors aren't even close to the pictures I've seen of Newtonii. Do you know what it is?
  6. Adding plants is way better than adding a sea hare. The animals you add will also produce waste which feeds the algae. If you get plants instead, after cleaning the glass, they will absorb all the nutrients and you can then move the mass of green to where ever you want it and it will stay there for the most part if that makes since. Next time you do a water change drain the sump completely and save as much of the water as you can. Then you can install bulkheads to run the skimmer externally and have room for a 'fuge'. I would also recommend adding to your clean up crew, such as nassarius snails or another type of sandsifter. They keep toxins and stuff from accumulating in the sand. I have 20 nassarius, 40 dwarf blue-leg hermits, 40 zebra turbo snails, and a mystery crab(possibly ruby mithrax) who hitch hiked in with my live rock all in a 105g. They eat any of the food that the fish don't eat. That way there's no decay burdening your aerobic bacteria. You may also want to add another algae eating fish because that would be more attractive and interactive than a sea hare. Your lawnmower seems to be a bit timid like mine. I think if you add some more rock that would also help. I would definately recommend cured and as much as you can handle. I'm still up for making that trip to SA after the new year.
  7. This is all news to me. I'm glad I'm finally learning something.
  8. Oh. That's too bad. Maybe you could invite your mother-in-law. I bought $65 worth of snacks for the meeting. Chips & ranch dip, carrots & brocli w/ french onion dip, sock-it-to-me cake, m&m cookies, strawberry mini-pastries, Gala apples, Dr. B, orange soda, diet caffiene free cola, oh yeah I almost forgot...2 kinds of roast beef w/ smoked cheese and crossants. I guess I went a little overboard, so she is welcome to visit and partake in the festivities.

  10. Sure! Hopefully that will help. I'm not sure how the PM notice popup works, but I do know it's not blocked by my popup blocker, so maybe even a colorful popup notice or link so that non-member visitors will also get informed. I don't know if you can make it popup for new IPs that enter any page on the site or if you can only make it popup when someone visits the homepage. Let me know.
  11. I'm planning on getting some items from eTropicals.com They have all sorts of inverts that are really well priced, but shipping is a killer $35. If two or three of us place an order together we can split the cost of shipping. Post what you're interested in from their site. Right now peppermint shrimp are $3.25!! Check it out!

You realize the December meeting is this Saturday, right? Maybe you'll have time to come and show off your inverntory. I might be interested in some. I have a digital scale that measures as low as 10lbs increasing by 1/5 lb increments.
  13. Wow. More people have viewed the meeting topic poll than this thread. It looks like there aren't going to be many people at this point. Get the word around so we'll have a crowd.
  14. I would not drill the tank. If you have an Oceanic, the resale value is pretty good, but not if you drill it. I recommend a standard overflow box. Usually they are rated with "up to ___ gph". If you have a 180 with a 55g sump you will most likely want a Mag-Drive 9.5 or an Eheim 1262. You could even use one as large as a Mag18. These should provide about 750gph of flow (or 1200gph for the 18) so you need an overflow box that's rated accordingly. I use a Mag12 and I only have a single overflow, but it just barely keeps up with the pump (possibly bad pump or under-rated overflow).
  15. I also use a mag float, but prefer to use one size larger than they recommend. If you scrub it this way: ..... _____ <--|_____|--> instead of this way: .... __ <--|7|--> <--|7|--> <--|_|--> I think it works a lot better. Magnets asside, I prefer the old fasioned scraper because when I get a small featherduster or sand or anything under the magnet it scratches the glass.
  16. They don't have kalkwasser on the list!
  17. They will only loose siphon if your hose is lower than the U pipe. I wouldn't worry about that. I use a hang on and never had a problem when my power went out. We all prefer drilled tanks, but cost and practicallity prevail. I recommend the eheim, or mag drive pumps. There is a poll thread in the other section addressing this exact debate. You will find more info than I can give you there.

    Want to trade?

I have some rhodactis to trade. Is the xenia light or dark pink? All three you're offering sound interesting. Do you have any pics or can I come see them?
  19. That depends on the size of the sump and the velocity of your return pump. Like I was trying to say, the pump will say a size of pipe needed. You should use a pipe at least that large, but preferably one or two sizes larger for the overflow.
  20. Here's one...oh wait, you don't want to see that. How about this one: Let me know if I should use that one or change it. Suggestions by non-competitors?
  21. Another way, that I should have thought of earlier, to measure the necessary PVC size is to find out what the return pump recommends. then use at least the same size or preferably one size larger PVC for the overflow.
  22. how far between the bulb and the water, and between the water and the coral? 15" should be plenty. did the coral start acting up before or after the water change? I would guess that it's a water quality issue. I would test your parameters. Are there any anemonies or stinging corals in your tank? As long as the coral isn't dead it will "bounce back" if you fix the problem.
  23. Hey! It's December now! It looks like Greenmako wins with 7 votes.
