  1. a bit on the older side. ive done it with the boy scouts. and i did it when i was a kid. the eldest i remember was a 16 yr old but majority is 13 under.
  2. hey yall. because i am unable to physically keep tanks at the moment, i just plan & dream. curious however when yall choose fish for you tanks. do you ever take into concideration thier origin? like not mixing south pacific with atlantic etc? i mean i know they are mixed all the time. but does anyone attempt to not just match personalility and temp requirements but actual habitats. or is that too far?
  3. hey yall! im workin on my aunts tank but a little problem. trying to lower the ph down to 6.0. discus. and so far its nutral. what we did was add a handful or two of that pelleted peat stuff for ponds. its working but only a little bit. does this sound like it should work? other easier ways to lower ph? i liked the peat pellets because she didnt have to mess with it.
  4. bit adultish humor http://www.catsprn.com/twelve_sti_xmas.htm the 12 STI of Christmas
  5. could it be near a vent or other new piece of equipment\object that produces heat?
  6. i just got out of the water from aquarena. because it is our school our school classes can dive there and do that course free, or part of our lab fee. it is wonderful. full full full of colorful fish, light vegitation and the hoops and such are fun to practice bouyancy control swimming through. the visibilty is great. '' thanks yall for the information.
  7. i would honestly add more mangroves. they are REALLY REALLY slow. you could easily add another dozen trees. as far as thier nutrient export i really believe they have a noticeable affect.
  8. anyone dive? im training for master certification. i finally own my own equipment. i would love to start diving the local waters. ive been looking for local online clubs. anyone looking for dive buddy what not? or in the least know of fun places to dive?
  9. if the sump is too small there is a way around it. for the T back use long tubing. instead of 6 inches back to the sump, use like 10 ft coiled back to the sump. this way all the head eats up the energy. probably be a lot cheaper than building a new sump
  10. flatworms are not bad, just kinda ugly(in some peoples eyes)
  11. i dont know if this would work but what if you tried controlling it like you do aptiasia? take a siringe and inject it with an acid... like lemon juice? a drop in a lot of stalks i bet would kill the colony. then it would be only a slight decay factor in the way of ammonia etc. i doubt the ph of your tank would flux from a few injectiosn of lemonade.
  12. i had the same problem. xenia just disolved in my tank. i have been told xenia does not do salinity flux at all. but i dont think purposly fluxing your salinity levels for a week is the best idea as that may hurt the other corals...
  13. i believe even at the local chain petstore are long handelded blade cleaners. i think only 24" tho. b
  14. its not working well? what is growin on the front that you cant control or you jsut askign if there is a better product out there?
  15. add a towel. drape a large towel or two over the tank. black out all the light.
  16. yes it will settle. i suggest puragin. its a wonderful product. add small bag (8$) from petsmart to your filter system. it will pick up the small fine particles that is making that cloudy water. make that stuff fly up and into the filter system and let puragin pull it out. you can also addd panty hose, great fine filter. put a few inches over each power head, so the water is blown through the pantyhose. rubber bands should hold it. the stuff will only be removed if you filter it out. turn everything on and let it run. really a week with puragin and you should be set. i know i endorse puragin all the time but that is because it is a miracle product. good luck. in the future you can cure limestone in a bucket that is acidic, it should help dislodge\disolve the dust. good luck.
  17. i thought discus was one of those black water soft species that did need the low parameters. or is that just with those who want to breed them? i just want to them to swim around and not die.
  18. if its after your corse mechanical filtration. you want the mechanical filtration to get finner as it travels through the filter, not corser. water to hit the corser filter sock then panty hose then the rest of yoru filtration. bio or chem. if you use puragin sock-pantyhose-puragin
  19. anyone have suggestions on how to deal with ph and hardness in freshwater? i need to lower the ph to 6 and greatly lower the hardness if i remember correctly driftwood helps lower ph avoid reef sand for hardness anyone recommend chemicals to deal with the rest? or are there other "objects" that can be put in a tank to help regulate the ph and hardness? are there rocks that lower hardness? i know limestone etc raise it... or is the only option really jsut to buy water?
  20. puragin is a synthetic bead. you can buy it at places like petsmart for 10$. its a bag of little white beads. it works like that blue filter floss on your filtration system except it picks up super super fine particles. the stuff it pics up contributes to the accumlation of detritus. if you decide to use it put in your filtration system like you would carbon or other media. make water pass through it and it will super filter your water. panty hose is another just simple cheap cheap filter media. the pores are so fine that it helps at collecting stuff out of the water colum before it settles down on the surface of your rocks etc increasing your detritus problem. the easiest way to use it is to take some and rubber band it on the output tubes in the tank. you will see that in a day or two it will be all sorts of nasty colors. that is just nastyness that has collected on the pantyhose. change it ever so often so that your flow is not hurt. that has always worked for me for never having detritus.
  21. puragin is a miracle product. it is crazy awsome. you can pick it up from petsmart etc. i think it is the best product that seachem makes and probably the best 15$ that can be spent in the hobby. you can clean it, reuse it. it pics up soo much stuff that you didnt even know that was there.
  22. the closest thing i have heard of was on the X1 the plane chuck yeager used, he had a problem with condensation on the windshield freezaing. he used a thin layer of soap and the water oil thing happened. but i dont know if that is the best idea for aquariums
  23. just so i could learn somthin... what is ORP?
  24. purigen is gods gift for this mess. put a bag of it in your filtration system. even if its a HOB aquaclear. get water passing through it and in about a week it will be black with the stuff it picked up. panty hose also works as a good fine filter. cut off a foot piece and wrap around all the outputs or whatnot and change every few days it will make a world of differene. (works well as bio media)
