  1. Don't I see some more inhabitants in there? I see some zoas and is that some type of SPS on the bottom? Don't forget that corals are animals even though they don't move. How is your water chemistry? Has the Ammonia and Nitrites had their spike and gone to zero? How are your nitrates? pH? Doing such a small tank, you'll need to keep an EXTREMELY close watch on those levels, especially here in the beginning and especially if you're going to do corals.
  2. The hood is SOLD and has been picked up. I think the lights are also SOLD to capty99, but we still need to arrange pick up. Thanks all! ~Sundra
  3. Bump. I have two people interested in the hood, but the complete T5 light set up is still available for $75. Please post here and PM me your phone number.
  4. When I read that line, I kinda thought the author was saying it tongue-in-cheek. It does seem unlikely that a coral would be able to aim that way. I knew cobras could, but corals didn't evolve around that many things with eyes and mouths, aside from the fact that they would have to learn to re-calibrate their aim according to the difference between water and air.
  5. ooooh I think it looks cool. So how much are they? I just saw links for where to buy, not how much.
  6. That's what makes me angry. Terrible shame about the tank (BTW, I think it was 1500 gallons, not dollars. ) but she not only has her kid bouncing around the vehicle without a seatbelt but doesn't even care to make sure he's okay!
  7. You know, I didn't know about the "hate" that was out there about AA, but I had my own problem with Mike after just the first or second time I went there. I can't remember exactly what it was about, but I remember leaving there furious and swearing never to return. It was a beautiful store, but what a horrible businessperson! I like ARC, Fishy Biz and Aquatek about equally and try to get to all three whenever I have a chance. I haven't been to Rockin Reefs but love the name and want to go see what Mama's got. Until this thread, I didn't know about Austin Aqua Farms but it sounds like I need to check them out too! I used to frequent Partner's when Tim owned it (about 8-10 years ago) and Gallery but haven't been to Partner's much since it changed owners and while I go in Gallery every once in a while, I don't usually find anything to buy unless I'm just there for something like a thermometer or some snails.
  8. I have a complete used T5 setup for a pair of 36" bulbs, including Work Horse 5 solid state ballast, endcaps with standoffs, 36" T5 Actinic 03 bulbs, parabolic reflectors and power cord. I looked up the individual pieces and found that it would cost about $150 if you bought all of them new online not including shipping, so I am asking $75. The bulbs have about 3 months of use. I also have a black wooden hood for a standard 75G (or 90G? I think they are the same length and width, just taller) with a set of fans mounted on it. The light set up above (with 2 - 36" T5's) used to be mounted on this hood, along with another set of 4 - 48" T5's for a total of 6 bulbs across the whole top. I'd like to get $20 for the hood with the fans but if you want both lights and hood, I'll make you a deal. Here are some pics: Hood (Sorry, a little dusty): 36" T5 Bulbs and reflectors: Ballast: Endcaps: Hood closed: Post here or PM me if interested. I will try really hard to make sure I check for PM's here every day.
  9. Thanks Zara! That's a very helpful tip. I'll have to keep a closer watch on my xenia for that.
  10. This may not be the stupidEST thing I've done, but I've done it so often that it gets a cumulative high rank on the stupid list. Doing a water change, I start taking water out either without turning off the main pump or the auto top off pump so I'm halfway through siphoning into a 5 Gal bucket and the top off starts dumping fresh water into the sump, or the sump pump starts sucking air. So I'm struggling to hold the top of the siphon in the tank, and keep the bottom of it in the bucket while stretching to reach under the tank to switch off the pumps. Why do I do this to myself?
  11. I was just looking at the ap store for tank maintenance aps and came across (I guess) the one you have, Mark. Is it called iReef or something like that? Works only with the Digital Aquatics ReefKeeper Elite (RKE) controller, right? I had Aquaria, but it doesn't have a place to list tank inhabitants or even notes. Just water tests and a fish compatibility database. There's a new one called Aquarium Buddy that I just got. I wanted to be able to record the date when I get new fish and corals and this one does that as well as water tests and other notes where you can list events like getting a new piece of equipment or moving the tank or just water changes and supplement additions. I'm surprised there aren't more reef tank maintenance aps for the iPhone. I mean with 85,000+ aps, you'd think there'd be lots.
  12. Yeah chark, salt water is SO much easier to clean up when it spills across the living room.
  13. You're right, clowns *usually* don't like condy's but some will go to anything with tentacles, including corals like frogspawn, elegance, etc. Are the tentacles long or short? Could you post a pic? I too am shocked a LFS would sell you an anemone without even being able to tell you what type it is. VERY unusual. Maybe you shouldn't say the name of the store so as not to start a bashing thread, but you could PM it to anyone who asks. Like me, I'm curious.
  14. I'm thinking pretty much the same thing as chrisfowler99. I currently have 6 in my 75G and wondered if I could get a couple more. It also depends on the age of the tank and what kind of corals you are keeping (ie how pristine the water quality needs to stay). I think mine could probably handle a couple more fish because it's been running for almost a decade so the biofilter is very mature, but since I'm just starting to do SPS I'm not going to chance putting in more bioload right now. My current residents are all pretty small: 2 mature PJ Cards, a firefish, a small/med flame angel, a large Mandarin dragonet, and a Mystery Wrasse who isn't full grown yet. I'd like to add a sandsifter goby to stir up my sand and a Purple Tang for some more color, but especially the tang would probably add a lot of bioload and I don't want my water quality to suffer at all. It does frustrate me though when people look in my beautiful (IMO) reef tank with all kinds of colorful soft corals blowing in the currents and say "Where are all the fish?"
  15. Hi Keith! Good to see you posting here. +1 to above comments. I like mine to be 78-79F but lately since I added the Metal Halide's it's creeped up to 82 on occasion. I added a fan to blow across the sump whenever the MH's are on and it's kept it between 78-80. My plan is to have fans on the canopy to run with the MH's and hopefully that will keep it more stable. I don't like it to vary more than 2 degrees.
  16. I'll try and make it. We were going to be setting up a Halloween scary trail in the back yard, but with all the rain and money being a bit tight this year, I just decided to scrap the idea for this year. Actually, the fact that this frag swap is happening Saturday helped me make the decision because I'd rather go to this!
  17. *Whaps Clint upside the head* OMG I log on to ARC and gasp when I see your post. My co-worker asks what's wrong so I'm reading it out loud as I look at it . . .then get to the part where it's just a dream. You really had me going!
  18. I'd like a piece of the birdsnest. I'll PM you.
  19. Okay Zara, you're gonna have to post a pic of that coral. I'm trying to imagine it.
  20. Gabriel, those are beautiful acans. Too bad about the Harlequin. Andrew! C'mon you must have pics of your fave? You're gonna make me Google scolymia? Zarathustra, I think I saw white lightening sponge at RCA the other day. Euphilia I know, Duncans I'll have to look up too.
  21. Can you do it? Can you pick your absolute favorite? Mine changes from one month to the next even if I don't change what's in my tank. I'm sure this question has been asked here before, but I couldn't find it when I browsed old topics, so I thought I'd ask it now. I do have an ulterior motive though. I'm getting ready to embark on the SPS route and I'm trying to decide what to get. I only want you to choose from what you currently have or have had in the past in your own tank, not what you saw online or in a friend's tank and wish you had. Take into consideration not only how it looks, but how well it does in your tank, growth rate, care requirements, whether it died 2 weeks after you introduced it, etc. It doesn't have to be SPS, but lets not count the fish in this one, just corals, anemones and other (relatively) stationary inverts. Oh, and I guess if you want to pick two things, your favorite that you have now and your all time favorite that you ever had in your tank, that would be good. Pics if possible, please! My favorite as of now would probably be my fuzzy mushrooms, but I'm sure that will be changing in the near future when I get some SPS. I like the way they move with the water and the tips have a little bit of a blue glow in the actinics. My all time fave would probably be the tube anemone in my avatar. I'd say my RBTA, but it was a pain the way it moved around all the time.
  22. I'm not sure how much HA Christian has now, but from my experience, it's hard not to fixate on it when it is all you see in your tank. That's how mine was. I had tried other methods for over a year before I finally got it under control. Patience is definitely important in this hobby and I agree with everyone who says not to do the "shotgun approach" and to give things time to work. However, in the case of HA, there is a fine line between patience and apathy and if you let it take over, it's really hard to combat. The fact that he made this post shows he's not apathetic, though.
