  1. A reminder that we have no validation that Jake's post was actually from a former employee and as such it was removed. There's no issue discussing the facts as we know them and having a healthy dose of skepticism but please adhere to the Forum Rules. That said, the director of the aquarium, Shaun, has made the following offer. With pending litigation he's limited in how he can publicly respond until then.

The Austin Aquarium has offered to host our club and to allow interested members to take a "back stage tour" to determine for ourselves what we think. There's a lot that can and will happen before then, but let's keep in mind that there is at least the offer of some transparency once their operation is actually running. I'm reserving judgement until then.

You can run a restaurant and give a health inspector the time to come by and your going to get good marks.... wait until he shows up unannounced to see the real hazards.

Yes, but if you show up and the restaurant doesn't have stainless steel sinks and all of the required equipment and licenses on the walls no amount of talk would convince you. It should be obvious if there are that many corners being cut.

All the top end equipment and license on the wall can't control bad husbandry. Who is to say they wont just clean up the place and make it shine for the tour? Kinda like a fish store store does when it is going to have a massive sale, clean up the tanks make it look awesome right before the sale and let it dwindle away after people close the door.

  2. i had a kitten fall in just a minute ago, actually. nothing as exciting as blood or downing. but doing cat rescue it is a constant thing here. i want to put a screen top on my tank, but i'm not sure how much weight it will hold.

bio, ssscat is the motion detecting air canister. i have found that they do not last very long, but sometimes the cat will start to recognize the thing as evil and avoid it even after it stops working. http://www.amazon.com/Ssscat-PDT00-13914-SSSCAT-Cat-Training/dp/B000RIA95G i'd order it online. trust me, walking into a pet store and asking if the sell scat is a bit embarassing.

oh man, my gf is going to hate me when my new item arrives :D

Where shall i leave it first? Next to the toilet at night? in the hallway? this is going to be awesome!

  4. nevermind, found some. I have way more than I need so if anyone needs some let me know, I'll give you some cheap. For those who are wondering, I wanted to start up a fish only tank with no chance for ich (ie starting with all dry rock and sand), and all wet items (fish, rock, etc) in the future will be treated using tank transfer method so that the chances of bringing ich into my display are slim to none. After I started my tank up recently then my fish got ich, I said, NO MORE!

Anyone know where to get the pure ammonia?

  5. My tank has (8) 2' BML fixtures run perpendicular to the sides.  Our kitten has decided that they are perfect for cross-training.  Caught her standing on two of them and dipping a paw into the tank, where my naive clowns are used to taking food from my hands.  We now have a battery of motion sensors attached to compressed air cans to keep her away.  Along with my fear of her falling in, being unable to escape, and drowning is the fear of what effect a wet cat would have on the health of the tank.

Where can I get these air cans. I'm gonna have some fun!

  6. Holy Schnikes:

Unless I missed something in the three pages of comments you're still talking about a 6 gallon tank.  Presuming a lot of equipment and substrate you're still talking about less than 10 lbs per gallon.  I'm a big fan of overdesigning* but art / style aside this is pretty simple.  The point being that even to me it seems like a lot of respondents have over engineered their responses.  Go to your local Walmart, Petsmart or other big box pet store.  Look at how their 10 gallon tank stands are designed, then think about how they would be sued if these stands weren't very generously engineered.

NOTE:  In re: my statement of overdesign I've built my own stands for 6, 10, 20, 29, 55, 180 tanks as well as stands for 46, 55 and 110 gallon tanks.  I've never built a stand that wouldn't conservatively support 2x their design weight as a minimum.

    6 gallon DT

    13 gallon sump

    5 gallon ato

I haven't been to Walmart in 5 years, that place sucks.

I've always commissioned metal stands, my last stand could hold up a hummer and it was for 90 gallons.

I think at some point we all got carried away and had fun with it. But all the wood stands I have seen took full 2x4 and don't look amazing in my eyes.

Thanks for chiming in, where are your build threads?

  7. I'm gonna have to look into getting these for my store. My customers would use on average no less than 50 feet of each color in 1 inch and 1.25 inches.

Also why not just get pallet racks and store floor to ceiling? Saves a lot of space.

  8. TT 4 just released (I grabbed the beta a while back and love it) This week only it is 99 cents then balloons back up to 4.99

If your ever browsing the forum from a phone this is a must have. I used to be in the boat "why pay for an app when I can use the browser"

This app will make life even easier than using your browser. Picture uploading is great and you can also get notifications via push for following/pm type things.

******ANDROID VERSION is the one I seee on sale, I dont know about you Iphone slingers.*******

  9. Did this order happen? My item is back in stock?!

    We ordered this morning

If you move fast you could add his item on before it ships, just gotta call and pay for it. I've done this for a few members during GB's and got items added about 1 hour before it shipped.

  10. Yeah I'm gonna go order some pink.. err I mean black for my nano build

I used the Krylon fusion on mine but it does tend to scratch off fairly easily. The appeal to me would be having the color throughout the pipe.

It sounds like if there were enough interest we could arrange a group order through our sponsor FlexPVC. Thanks to them for chiming in!

If I was still in ATX I'd love to get in on a group buy, I'll just paint mine for now and call it good. Or just let it encrust with coraline and forget about it.
