Sounds like it could be external gas bubbles disease. Do a search on it and find out if thats what it is.

Are the bubbles under the skin?

Its the clumsy ponies id be worried about...The urchin may not intentionally harm them but the horses may hurt themselves on the spines

Im thinking it has something to do with clumsy ponies around sharp objects.
