So I'm using a Cascade canister filter on my 60 gallon LPS-dominated tank. The tank has been running since mid-April and I do 5 gallon weekly water changes and monthly cleanings of the filter, replacing the filter pads when I feel it's necessary. The filter came with a bag of carbon that I have been using since the initial setup. I've read that replacing carbon should be part of the monthly filter cleaning, but money has been pretty tight lately. However, I do plan on getting some more soon so I can replace the old stuff.
My question, basically, is: do I use the same activated carbon as the stuff that is used in the reactors? Aside from improving water clarity, are there any other benefits to running carbon? I've had a pretty unhappy acan colony for about a month and a half now, but it is still alive; is there any chance that fresh carbon could help the colony? I also just lost a pretty little ricordia that was slowly shriveling up and finally completely disappeared over the weekend, but all my parameters are where they should be; again, is there any chance fresh carbon could help with future issues?
Thanks in advance for responses.
