  1. Ooooo... mantis vs. gorilla crab... I'd like to see video of that!!
  2. Yasha haze and pistol pair!! I had them in my pico and loved loved loved watching them... till the yasha jumped (THROUGH the tiny hole in the lid... sigh) and the pistol turned up mysteriously dead (I suspect my pom-pom crab). Neon gobies would be awesome too, I had those for awhile too until they also disappeared (again, suspect the pom-pom crab).
  3. This light has a magnet that goes in the tank, and a corresponding magnet in the light so that the light is held on the outside of the tank and shines into the fuge area. It was originally designed for nano tanks like the Biocube, Nanocube and Solana in which a back chamber needs to be lit through glass. http://www.jbjlighting.com/prod-nano-glo.html
  4. Hi all, Decided to switch up the filtration in my Solana and don't need a couple things any longer: JBJ Nano Glo LED Fuge Light - used for about a year, works great, still have original packaging - $30 inTank Solana Media Rack - only used for about a month, so practically mint condition - includes the inTank Solana Foam Holder - $60 Please PM if you're interested. I'll give it a couple days here and then post on Nano-Reef. Thanks!
  5. My boyfriend went from a 20 to a 30, and is now debating between a 75 and a 105. I keep telling him, if he gets the 75 he'll just want a 105-120 in another year, so he should get will make him happy for several years. I went from a BC14 to a NC24 to a Solana 34 with each upgrade coming about a year after the previous. This hobby is too expensive for a new tank every year! Get what will keep you happy for a long time - even if it's more expensive up front, it's cheaper in the long run.
  6. Thanks so much! PM sent.

    Fish trap

Looking to borrow or rent a fish trap in the N. Austin area. Let me know what you have!
  8. It's not very well publicized and there's a whole process you have to go through to get the free pass - provide a copy of your TX teaching certificate, a pay stub from the last 30 days, a pass you get online, and something else. I think there's a deadline as well (June 9?). Just Google "sea world tx teachers pass" or something similar and links should pop up. TCTA may also have a link on their website.
  9. Mike, teachers get free season passes to Sea World, so Roland and I would only need the behind the scenes pass. Can you let us know if that's possible? Thanks!
  10. Check out the Tank Build and DIY areas of the forum. You will see lots of pics of people's tanks, lots of different ways to do things, and better yet, everything is documented. Don't be afraid to ask people if you can come see their tanks... most of us are more than happy to show off our babies, I mean tanks, and talk about our progression in the hobby and the things we have found effective/ineffective.
  11. Dang that's a beautiful piece!
  12. Tank went to new ownership last weekend. Thanks!
  13. When I first got in my boyfriend challenged me not to pay full price for anything because there are so many good deals to be had on all the various forums. And to date I've bought every one of my tanks as well as all the accessories (skimmer, fuge light, media racks, etc.) used thanks to fellow hobbyists here, MAAST, DFWMAS, and Nano-Reef. I think the only stuff I've ever paid full price for are fish, frozen food, supplements, and one or two "have to have" corals. A lot of the little stuff is most cheaply found at the Dollar Store - Super Glue Gel 3/$1, cheap tupperware, turkey basters, etc.
  14. Reposting this from my earlier thread.... Biocube 14 - stock return pump. Tank was new about 1.5 yrs ago. I did a number of mods and upgrades on this one: - removed false bottom from first chamber - dremeled out fan guards for better air circulation; separated power supply for fans and upgraded them. The fans are on a separate timer. I have no heat issues even with the lighting upgrade and a closed lid. The fans are a little louder but it's well worth it IMHO. - Nanotuners lighting upgrade: 3 x 24w bulbs; currently running two actinic and one white for a bluer look in the tank. One blue bulb is on a separate timer for dusk/dawn simulation. Bulbs are about 3 mos. old. Has moonlights on a separate switch as well. Tank is cleaned up and ready to go; add sand, LR and water and you're ready to go! With the extra bulb you can keep just about anything in this tank, especially if you use the PC-R bulbs from UVL. Package comes with Biocube skimmer w/airstones and air pump, inTank media rack for BC14, timers, heater, old bulbs, and various extra parts; I don't have the Biocube stand but you can have the small table it's on in the pics. Selling rules: PM for interest; first person to show up with cash gets the tank etc.; I live near Parmer/McNeil and can meet up this weekend (due to my long work hours weekday meetings are more difficult for me). Please no lowball offers, not interested in parting out at this time. Thanks for looking!
  15. We defrost cubes in a little Tupperware container and just leave it in the fridge. They seem to stay good for 3-4 days min. Good for those of us who feed a variety and don't want to deal with defrosting food every time. When our tanks were small and lightly stocked, it would take us at least 3 days to go through a cube... lol... those were the days!
  16. Thanks for the nems and the plate, Ty! It was great to talk shop for awhile!
  17. What type of set up you invest in should be dictated by what type of color and what type/how many fish you want to keep. PC lighting is not appropriate for SPS, but a halide over a small tank can cause heat issues. You can't have a tang in a smaller tank. etc. etc. etc. You might want to take a look at some of the member tanks in the tank build threads here and on other forums (Nano-Reef, Reef Central, Reef Addicts, etc.) and see what you like. I'm sure plenty of members would be happy to have you come over and check out their tanks and explain their set-ups, maintenance, etc.
  18. Are you sure it's cotton candy algae and not red gelidium? Cotton candy algae is pink, stringy and is easily removed. Red gelidium is reddish-maroon in color, feels coarse and fuzzy sort of like turf, and actually grows roots down into the rock and so is very hard to remove. There are threads on Nano-Reef about people nuking it with kalk paste and even (literally) a blow torch. I used Mexican turbos as most snails and crabs won't touch it, and that worked out fine for me. Since it sprouted out of a newly introduced rock/plug, and has not spread rapidly or floated around the tank, I'm inclined to say it's gelidium rather than cotton candy.
  19. Hmmm... I may have to try that... my dad could draw just about anything with pancake batter (numbers and Disney characters were faves) and I've always felt a bit of a failure that I'm not quite as gifted.
  20. That's awesome! I wish I were that talented with pancake batter! Arg, pancake days here depend on the family... at my dad's house, it was Saturdays, at my mom's, Sundays, in my house it's usually Sundays or whatever other day my boyfriend manages to wheedle them out of me...
