  4. Who's coming to the meeting this weekend at my place? Sat @ 2pm!

  5. I'm in DOC hell and have been for several months. Will it ever end?? Maybe Santa Claus will clean up my tank and bring some healthy SPS.

The nuisance algae we get in our tanks make huge amounts of DOC compounds that are detrimental to corals. You need to physically get the algae out of your tank. Once you do it shouldn't take long for your corals to bounce back.

      I have that same problem!

  7. How long after feeding would you wait to test phosphate?

5 minutes? Pellets and flakes I'd guess take a while to show up and the liquid off frozen food should mix in pretty quickly and then it's at least hours before the fish process what they've eaten.

Can you go into more detail? IMO most of the time a fish eats a coral there was a problem with the coral.

We've all drowned :-D The ball on one of the ball valves leaked when we tested it with water in the tank.

  15. Found an empty snail shell. This scares me into thinking I still have a polyclad flatworm. Here's wishing I had started my tank with dead rock....Anymore dead snails and I may have to.

They can, I had a Astraea that lived for 8-10 years and and a shell over 2" tall and the diameter of a $.50 piece. But one out of thousands of shells I've seen isn't a good ratio.

I have reef systems that are decades old and I've never had any longterm success with snails. Got urchins bought in the '90s and had Sally Lightfoots 4-5 but snails rarely make it to a year.

  18. Great water q? No, just a bad test kit. New kit says I'm at 20-30 NO3-. Going with weekly water changes for awhile. Really don't want to skim.

      Sorry about the screwup :-(

. . . readings dropped to 0.0 ppm. I wouldn't expect this to work with every high nitrate problem but it's worth a try.

Considering there are refractory and other compounds we can not test for, periodic water changes with new saltwater are recommended by all the scientists I've read. But I have seen nitrate issues corrected with water from an existing healthy tank that did not have nitrates. The one extreme example was just a few months ago with a friends holding tank which read >160 ppm. Twelve days after doing a ~15% water change with water from a reef system that had very little nitrate the readi...

Try doing a 10% water change with water from a system that doesn't have any nitrates. Surprisingly I've seen nitrates disappear very quickly on occasion.

  22. The gfci that my tanks are on keeps tripping. Should I be looking for a tank problem or a house problem? It's only staying on for a few minutes at a time. Haven't had this happen until today.

    1. Timfish

      Timfish

You can try unplugging stuff on the aquarium one plug at a time. The times I've run into a piece of equipment that's bad it trips a GFCI immediately.

  24. Will using Epsom salts for mg dosing affect my salinity? I put it in the refractometer and it was off the chart...literally...no blue.

      Timfish

if you're testing the mixture before adding it to your tank it's going to be really concentrated. You can guestimate a rough ppt reading by figuring epsom salts to water. 1/4 cup epsom to 1 cup water shoud give a Parts Per Thousand, ppt, of something like 250 I'm guessing :-D

  25. I am starting to feel like Ty... every time I clean the glass in the 24g I break some Birdsnest tips and the top of a hard tube worms tube.
