Crazy J
I have a question about mini-white serpeant star fish. I was looking at my refugium today (I got lost in it for roughly half an hour) and noticed mini-serpeants all over the place. I had never noticed them before, but I'm assuming they are safe because of their size. Do they attack pods? Also, I have an outbreak of mini-white feather dusters as well. How many is too many? Both seem to have taken over, anyone have any thoughts on this.
+dapettit
they are a good thing. The stars I believe will work as sand sifters and the feather dusters are mini water filters, Dave-
Derek
They are fine. I like the mini serpant stars. They are so cute and fun to watch.
Meteorflower
They're nothing to worry about. The stars are good detritivores.
subsea
Hey J, Many reef keepers focus on the refugiums more than the show tanks. Daniel Knop, German expert reef keeper, had a wonderful exibit at the Pittsburg MACNA conference. Mature reef systems, especially skimmerless natural systems, produce abundant mini-inverts with much diversity. Patrick
Crazy J
I definately have an abundance of Feather Dusters and starfish, I was worried because they are at epidemic levels along with the astrea stars in my main tank. The Feather Dusters are even starting to cover my return pump (brave little guys). Edited December 21, 2009 by Crazy J
polarbear
if you ever want to get rid of some of the feather dusters let me know. I could use some in my refugium. I have been waiting on mine to start up but no luck yet.
subsea
A reef tank has a dynamic progression of dominate critters. Each goes through its cycle. Very similiar to a "climax forrest" on land. Enjoy the view.
offroadodge
so get a Harlequin Shrimp and the starfish will be gone, but if you have a starfish in the tank you want you should probably remove it. It will become food.
