This update has been a while coming ...

The stand is 75% complete. Here are picture of the frames that will skin the stand.

The fist is of the frame before the pallet wood was added.

The second is with the pallet wood before sanding and staining.

The last is the completed front panel with magnets on all four corners to hold the panel in place .

Today I ordered my overflow box, went with the 16" Synergy and my return pump Sicce 3.0. I will start the sump construction over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Time for a major update, there is actually salt water in the tank and sump!

First are some pictures of the plumbing.

Looking from the top of the external overflow box, the far left is the main drain that has a filter cap and is totally submersed so there is no gurgling noise. The far right is the drain into the refugium and that flow is just a trickle that is controlled by adjusting the gate valve on the main drain. The middle one is the emergency overflow and goes into the skimmer section as well but will hopefully never be used.

In order to raise the water level in my display tank I am making the standpipes for the refugium drain and emergency drain about 1/4" and 1/8" repectively, so that I can close the main drain a bit more because the flow is a bit to much right now. Secondly I went with the Sicce 3.0 and I am not thrilled with it. It is a bit lounder than I expected and I think I want a bit more return flow. I think I may go to an Eheim.

The last pictures are of the stand and tank and then the sump underneath. I have about 55 pounds of crushed coral in the display tank and about 5 pounds of crushed coral and 5 pounds live rock with some cheato in the sump. It has only be running for 48 hours so the water is a bit cloudy but has cleared up greatly in the past 8 hours. My plan is to have the tank run like this and then take a water sample to River City to get it tested.

Live rock for the display tank will be the next purchase.

Thanks for looking!

John

Thanks for the compliment! It was a lot of hard, but fun work. Sorry to hear about your family tragedy, my prayers are with your family.

I did go with the silent 3.0 and it just seems to have a bit of a rattle/hum to it. When I but my hand on it lessens a bit but it is still there. I will keep it and use it to mix water, but I think the Eheim will be ordered very soon.

Here is the latest update. The tank has been up and running for a month and I have been having the water tested weekly with no issues! The clean up crew consists of:

1. 10 bumble bee snails

2. 10 pink margarita snails

3. 20 hermit crabs

4. 1 emerald crab

5. 1 sally lightfoot crab

6. 1 pink brittle starfish

I feed them every other day and they are all doing well.

Now, I am ready to add my first fish and coral. The first fish was going to be a Midas Blenny and the first coral was going to be a few GSP. What is the opinion on these being the first occupants of 'Serenity' (that's the tank name :P )? And yes the Midas Blenny will be named Kaylee.

Midas blennies have to be one of my favorite fish. They have so much personality. I think it will be fine to be your first fish in the tank.

Zoas, I'd stick with the GSP and maybe a zoa frag for now and see how they take to the tank.

For your clean up crew, just my opinion, ditch the bumble bee snails and the hermit crabs. I find them both useless and to top it off, the hermit crabs are annoying... may start killing off your snails, and will trample your corals constantly.

Here are a few examples of the design. The first shows the tank with the front skin on the frame and the second shows the skin removed. YOu can see the metal down the side that the magnets connect to.

The last picture is a frame before standing staining. I built a rectangle frame with 1"x2" and used finishing nails to attach the pallet wood to the frame.

Let me know if you have more questions or want to come over and see it.

So the tank is up and running for almost 2 months now.

I have about 7 coral frags in there and they are all doing well. I am finding that I am a huge acan fan! I love the look and the movement.

I only have a blue damsel in there right now because I am going to bite the bullet and switch my substrate to sand so each week I am taking out a bit of the crushed coral. I am thinking in about a month I will drain the tank a bit, take out the rock and do the final switch. Therefore, I do not want to add any more wildlife just to be safe.
