  1. I had the exact same problem on my tank. Grim & I tried a bunch of things to quieter it down. In the end the 3 things that seemed to make the most difference were:

    1) 90 degree elbows in the sump.

It seems counterintuitive, but when we added this piece of PVC with two 90 degree elbows to the pipes it was definitely quieter than having the pipes going straight into the sump unhindered.

    2) Shower poufs! :)

I stuffed the top of the chamber with 3 shower poufs. It was originally to help minimise the salt spray, but it usefully seemed to cut down on noise too!

    3) Time. Mike is right about the slime build up. Over time the bubbling/noise noticeably diminishes.

  2. I don't really know much about chitons but I'd have thought if its hanging on then it's probably alive.

Thx for the bumblebees btw! They're having a grand ol' time with all the dead snails!

  3. All Floridas were definitely still "ex-snails" this morning. Pulled the tubs of them out and quite a few of the snail bodies have separated from their shells... plus they smelt like one of my Boston Terriers farts!

Luckily the tank seems ok today. I changed the carbon last night and added a 1/2 dose Dr Tims Waste Away to deal with the fallout. The water is a bit cloudy from the bacterial bloom, but all the corals & nems seem happy (whew!)

Still kicking myself for spreading the dwarfs everywhere... :( Going to have to do a major round up today and try to figure out who's alive and who's dead. Lesson learned on adding them in a tub next time.

  4. Thanks John! Really appreciate that. :)

I'm still holding out hope for my snails. The actinics have come on now and some of the dwarfs have started to move.

Still no signs of life from the Floridas, but they all seem tight in their shells so I'm hoping maybe they might have just closed up tight to prevent the smelly bag water getting into them. I'll leave them until tommorow before calling it quits on them. Unfortunately I can't give them any longer as I just introduced 2 rather expensive nems this week and I don't want to risk a spike.

    I'll update tommorow!

  5. Crikey, feeling a bit nervous now about nutrient spikes. I reeeeeally hope the dwarf ceriths are ok because I ordered loads of them and (like an idiot) scattered them all over the place. :(

Watching my cleaner shrimps & hermits picking over them and they seem to be leaving most of them alone so hopefully that's a good sign...?

  6. Actually it was the snails that came with the damp cloth (nass & dwarfs) that seemed to fair better for me. It was the Floridas in the water that seem DOA (trying the "climb out if you're alive" technique, thx Bio!) ;)

I've been tricked this way before though. Not counting anyone out until tomorrow. *fingers crossed*

  7. My Florida Ceriths all appear DOA. Super stinky and the shells have a load of holes in them. :(

Saw some movement with the dwarfs and nass so I chucked them in. Wish I'd been smart enough to keep them in a tub... I scattered them all over the place instead, d'oh. Here's hoping they'll wake up or I'm going to be spending most of tomorrow picking them all out, urgh.

No fuzzy chiton in sight, although with the DOA ratio it sounds like a single one wouldn't have made it anyway, so probably for the best.

Shame we've had so many DOAs, but always great to meet new ARCers! :)

(dwarfs come with a damp cloth btw)

  8. <-- Hause<br />I'll see you at 6ish. Anything we should be looking out for to recognise you? Well, apart from the fact you'll (presumably) be the only one handing out snails in the parking lot...!

  9. You'd probably gave better luck with responses if you started a new thread in the Reefkeeping forum. People probably just missed your question in here.

There are lots of different ways to aquascape, from a rock "wall" to columns or even just a couple of minimalist rock islands.

You can find lots of info online by googling "aquascaping reef tank.". There's also a great thread on ReefCentral that's full of inspiring aquascapes:

(I went through the whole thing before attempting mine!) :)

  10. Haven't heard from RCers about the discount code oopsy, but my order was confirmed. I emailed them to say I'd be happy to paypal them the difference, that way it won't have to interfere with the GB.

  11. Oh actually...make that $46.32 for me! Just found a 15% coupon: reefclub

    (Corrected previous post)

Having some trouble logging into RC to make my order. Waiting on password reminder now. If it doesn't come through soon I'll just have to register again.

Per RC group buy fine print, techically you are not allowed to combine other promotions. However, I do know that the ARC discount is honored - use "ARCreefclub" to get a 5% discount.

Oh crap, I just made my order! :(

Sorry I've never done a GB before. I'll try and sort it out with RC
