  1. Still available! biggrin.png

I'll be sure to update the thread when it's gone.

I'd like to at least sell the tank first before parting out.

I can do a deal of the tank (inc stand + sump) + lights + powerhead for a tidy $1000... which basically means you'd get the powerhead for $20! (Or comparing to new prices, the lights and powerhead for FREE!) Not a bad way to spend your Christmas money! laugh.png

Best to PM me as I keep forgetting to check this thread.

  2. Maybe about 2". He really didn't look big enough to eat sexies, let alone all 5 in one night, but they just vanished one morning. He used to nip the yashas high fin off too. It started to grow back and then it would be a stump again.

I never saw him actually do any of these things, but then I never saw him eat any food I offered either. Perhaps if he'd accepted prepared food he might not have been as opportunistic. I only had him for a month or so before trading him in at aquatek (nobody picks on my yasha! :)) It's possible he might have stopped being a jerk given enough time.

  3. Maybe, maybe not. I got a Tanaka Pygmy Wrasse and a couple of weeks later all 5 of my sexy shrimp disappeared overnight(!)

The only other fish in there was a Yasha goby who had lived peacefully with the shrimp for several months. I never saw it happen, but it must have been the wrasse.

  4. Allow me to be Tang Police for a minute...

I think a 120 is too small as well. These fish need swimming room and a 4ft long tank doesnt provide much, let alone a 92 corner. I'd even posit that the 144 half round is undersized for one. A 6ft long tank would be minimum IMO.

    \rant off

You're probably right there. I was hoping that the curved edge would help because they could potentially follow it round for a longer swim ...plus I have a very open plan aquascape. Still not ideal though I know! I might give up on my hopes for a blue tang, I definitely wouldn't feel right with a full size one crammed in my tank. Might set my sights on a Yellow Tang instead. grin.png

Tank raised? I didn't know they were breeding them, where can you find tank raised juvies?

I don't think they're tank bred yet, but I have seen tank raised ones being sold online before. I believe either the eggs or juvis are collected from the wild and then raised in captivity. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to name names as they're not a sponsor, but google "tank raised blue tang" and you'll find them. I've never actually seen them in-stock though.

  5. Its not looking great, but they can have moments of looking v bad. How long has it been looking like that?

I'd give it a chance and see what happens. They're not especially toxic or anything if they die, mostly just water! In a tank as big as yours it probably wouldn't really notice.

  6. Yeah I'd definitely trade the shrimp in that case, at least until the nem is big and sticky enough to defend itself.

My BTAs are still looking dreadful, but they seem to be doing better without the constant irritant of shrimp feet. Mind you now the hermits are getting in on the act, grrr.

  7. Welcome aboard! I was in the sane position as you, always craving going salt, but being told it was too hard.

The hobby and tech have come a long way in recent years and its totally doable now... I actually find it easier than freshwater! Just take it nice and slow, esp during the first 6mths, that's the toughest time when everything is leveling out. Things get much easier to maintain after that.

    Have fun! :)

  8. Just keep an eye on it. If the nem won't stay put, or starts looking unhappy then definitely consider trading the shrimp in.

I just had to trade my 2 in for harassing my new BTAs. I don't think the shrimp initially caused their decline, but they were certainly exasperating the situation. As long as yours stay healthy, (and you bribe the shrimp with food before feeding,) you should be OK.

  9. One of the strombus snails from IPSF managed to lay an egg sack in a great place for taking photos. It was SUPER hard to remember to not clean that bit of the glass for a few weeks, but I did it!

One weird thing that I only noticed just now while looking at the pictures on a big screen. Anyone know what the heck this is?

  10. I have a few more frags and a couple of new fish! It was going to be 3 new fish, but unfortunately the Copperband didn't make it through the ALLWYSIWYG's QT... which in retrospect might not be the worst thing in the world for my ailing nems!

Meet one half of the Pikachu twins! (aka Yellow Clown Gobies)

    clown-goby-1.jpg

I know, I know! I need to stop stocking like a nano owner! But I liked the idea of playing Where's Wally/Waldo with them.

One of them has taken up residence on the right pillar, almost constantly visible hopping in and out of the Marco rock (man they love Marco rock!) He's even been getting brave enough to sneak into the fake nem, although I hope I'm not encouraging bad habits for later on down the road!

    clown-goby-chillin.jpg

I hadn't seen the second one since adding them and figured he must have perished, but suddenly the other day at feeding time he came streaking out of the left side LR and landed in Kululu's burrow! Kululu was not pleased with the uninvited guest and before I could do anything to stop it, he ate him!! bye.gif

Now I've read that yellow clown gobies secrete a poisonous mucus to protect themselves, and it looks like Kululu might know that now too, because a few moments later he spat him out in a coughing fit. Pikachu #2 was a little stunned for a moment, but then swam off to the safety of the LR. I haven't seem him since, but I hope he's in there somewhere.

I've also been buying a few frags. Nothing too photogenic yet, but I wanted to document them so I can have some growth shots later.

Thought I'd take a chance on some easy care SPS. Much to my surprise they seem v happy:

New yuma makes my old one look pale in comparison!

    Eye of Ra zoas

    eye-of-ra.jpg

There are some more zoas scattered about but I couldn't get a good shot of them (curved glass does have its drawbacks.)

The open brain has been looking a bit withdrawn lately so I moved it into a more shaded spot. After further investigation it sounds like the red ones are from deeper waters. Really hope it recovers because it's one of my favs.

I didn't realize until I compared this FTS with the last, but the frogspawn and green toadstool are growing like crazy!

  11. I've been fighting some pretty horrible cyano on the sandbed on the left side of the tank; pulling out the big clumps whenever I have the canopy off.

    cyano4.jpg

I wish I could go back and tell "past me" to bring the side pillars in a little so the mp40s have a bit more room. I didn't really think about pump placement when I aquascaped and it's resulted in the side pillars shielding the tank somewhat from the flow. Ideally the powerheads should be on the side of the tank facing each other, but as the glass is curved, that option is completely out. I may have to add another dose of chemi-clean, although I'm trying to hold off on doing that in case it upsets my already fragile nems.

My large brittlestar is still stuck in the thin bit of the overflow, so he hadn't been any help in keeping the sand clean. I bought a fighting conch and couple of tiger tail cukes to help out, but none of them have moved much yet. Maybe once they settle in they might head towards the cyano sand.

But it hasn't been all doom and gloom! smile.png I was using a torch to check on the sunburst nem around the back of the rockwork and a darting movement caught my eye. Would you believe it, it was a baby Bangaii Cardinal!!

    baby-bangaii.jpg

    (see medium magfloat for scale)

    Extreme close up:

    baby-bangaii-close.jpg

Issac (Dad) is already holding a new clutch so the baby must be at least 2 weeks old. Considering cardinals are supposed to be reared in a dedicated tank with live foods, it's amazing that he's survived in the DT! He's quite close to the sickly sunburst nem, so I wonder if he's been noshing on the enriched mysis/Rods food that I've been squirting in that end of the tank?

None of the other fish ever venture to that part of the tank and the fire shrimp that lives there doesn't seem to notice him so hopefully if I keep turkey basting in his direction he'll continue to grow. Nature is amazing! jump.gif
