  1. During the cycle you will want to check Ammonia and Nitrites.

You will see the Ammonia go up first, then the Nitrites, then both of them drop back down to 0. When that happens your tank is cycled. Until then, you can pretty much skip all the other tests (well, except salinity). This will save on the chemical testing supplies :)

Don't think you would much heat issues, but depending on the strength of the lamp you plan on using, the side under the shelf is going to get a lot less light. Probably so much so that you won't be able to keep a lot of photosynthetic corals on that side. But, there are non-photosynthetic corals such as sun corals and certain gorgonians.

  2. Nice clam...those squamosas grow faster than croceas....that will definitely be your centerpiece "as far as clams go". I miss mine :( .

I am stocked up on calcium :)

I wanted a maxi that prof had, but I didn't think my lights were intense enough to have it on the sandbed (n a rock).

  3. Cute pic of jawfish....looks like you got several cucs in your tank. Nice close-ups.

Good eye :) Yep, I have two in there. The black one, and the yellow on peeking around the brain. They get all around the tank.

(And the jawfish is my favorite)

  4. Christian,

Some friendly advice. It might be helpful for all if ran a spell checker before you make your posts :) And using somewhat proper grammar would help too. It took me a few tries to figure out "wate" = "wait" and "win" = "when".

I realize this is the internet and people use shortcuts all the time, but for the sake of people trying to help you it would go a long way.

Again, don't take this as anything negative. Just wanted to offer some advice.

  5. DOH!!!! You are funny James....glad all is well...he's a fiesty lil' dude, ain't he??wacko.gif

Well, he hasn't tried to bite me (yet). :) The anemone is a little perturbed with all of the lovin' it is getting from the fish, but I think they will come to a mutual understanding here soon.

  6. Here are some more pictures I took this weekend.

Still have a few more pictures for a later post.

  7. You said you replaced the crushed coral and added sand right? I bet that is what is causing this cycle. The crushed coral would have had beneficial bacteria in it. You are just going through the phase of re-establishing bacteria in your sand bed.

  8. Picked up this nice squamosa clam today from prof's. Talk about a great deal. For the price I paid, you normally get a tiny 1-2" clam. This guy has to be about 4-5"! I love the pattern on it.

These guys have been a pleasant surprise. They were freebies with an order, and I put them on the back of a rock. And here they are a nice color!

I don't know why, but I do like this gorgonian. It is not colorful, but it is cool.

I have more pictures, but will save them for later :)

  9. Another great meeting. Thanks prof for hosting and for providing prizes, hope we didn't add too much to the stress of your day :)

My wife likes the new clam that I purchased from ya cool.gif

Edit: And dapettit, hope your wife is doing well! You guys were missed.
