  1. For Sale:

Standard 30 gallon Oceanic aquarium (30"x12"x19") [No Stand]

    What comes with the sale:

    - Rena SmartFilter 30

    - Florescent light strip

    - Rocks

    - Tank decor

I have already sold the stand and need to move the aquarium. It was always used for freshwater fish.

  2. +1 for Mama. I made my first visit to her place this past weekend and added to my CUC. 1 peppermint shrimp, 5 banded trochus, and 3 nassarius snails. (Thanks Mama! I will definitely be visiting again for other goodies.....if I can leave the kids at home it makes browsing much easier :P )

I have also bought CUC stock from both River City and Aquatek. Nothing wrong with either place, but if you are looking something specific then a call before you visit would be a good idea to make sure they have them in stock.

  3. Where are you located? I would at the least be very interested in some of the rock. But your 'DEAL' is very appetizing as well!

    PM Sent.

  4. Well, by the time I got there they only 15g barrels available. And I only had a $10 bill on me. They take checks and have no change on hand. I should have known better. But they offered 4 of the 15g barrels for $10 and I loaded them up. The only down side is that they didn't have any lids for them.

I will probably want to find a way to plumb a spigot into the bottom of them to allow for easy access to the contents. I may have make the hole in the top large as well to allow for maintenance and a powerhead for salt mixing.

  5. Do these barrels have lids? I would like to set up a couple in my garage to hold top off water and saltwater for changes. If they have lids that would be ideal to keep junk out of the water.

Where abouts is the CC plant? I will be out of town for the weekend and I live in Elgin. 2 of the 30g ones would be the start of a good system.

  6. That sounds like a great deal! If I bought barrels then I would feel obligated to purchase a RODI system next. As it is I bring home RO water 20g at a time from RCA.

$5 /barrel is cheap, but then I would have to justify the other costs ;)

Does anyone know how much RODI water from RCA is?

  7. So then too much flow is relative to what you are keeping in your aquarium. I have heard that a ball park gph to start with would be 6-10x tank volume. And then you would adjust according to specific needs.

In my 65g I have a Rio 2500 return pump and a Koralia 3. I am happy with my flow for now. My xenia and frogspawn sway gently from where they are positioned and I have the few SPS corals placed in a higher flow area. I do have sand being kicked up in one corner that I occasionally have to level out.

  8. I have not stopped by Mama's yet, although I am looking forward to when we finally do get to stop by. I believe she has mentioned that kids are not an issue as my little hooligans love trips to the fish stores.

I am needing more snails and a couple peppermint shrimp.

  9. Tank stats:

    -65g no sump/refug

-Established for a few months with soft coral, lps, and sps all looking good.

-Snails, hermits, and an emerald crab all doing fine.

-Started with 3 chromis, but am down to 1 now.

-3x26" T5 full spectrum and 2x24" VHO super actinic.

    - All of the tests that I have had done at RCA have shown good levels for Ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. Ca was a bit low so I am now dosing 2 part on a daily basis.

Onto my questions and thank you for your time!:

#1) Today I first noticed what I believe to be a flatworm. Research says that the clear ones are harmless and feed on pod population. Is this a harmless flatworm?

#2) I just noticed these little guys today as well while investigating in a dark cave. They appear to be baby astrea snails, but that is merely my best guess. Any inputs?

#3) My wife had bought a frag of green star polyp from RCA and when she bought it the guy there had mentioned that there may be another kind of coral growing, but it might be hard to keep alive. I didn't think much of it until I noticed that the red coral that was growing beside the GSP was slowly becoming more white. I pulled it out of the tank and inspected it and it appeared to be actually an encrusted monti frag that the GSP had grown over. So I broke off the remaining red area and secured those 3 pieces to plugs. The one pictured below is by far the biggest and has shown the most growth. Any idea what it might be? My educated guess is a red monti, but any other ideas are welcome.

  10. Liz, I would be happy to save you trimmings of the lugwigia. I believe that it will grow under the light you have. I am running my fixture at half power currently due to a bloom of beard algae. Once I get the beard under control I will let you know and put some trimmings aside for you.

I don't believe I have been to Gallery of Pets before. Pretty much if I need anything planted I go to Aquatek.

As far as substrate goes I am using black flourite. I also supplement with Flourish brand root tabs for the heavy root feeders (tiger lotus, crypts, swords).

Here is a photo of my planted 55 tall (in this pic the luwigia was very short and all in the background. Currently it grows to the top and lays on the surface):

  11. I have found that Aquatek has a decent selection of plants and a few of the staffers there are quite knowledgeable. There is a young kid there who really knows the plants, however I don't know his name.

I have a 55g planted tank that is somewhat successful. I have a coralife 2x65w CF fixture and run pressurized CO2. My flora includes ludwigia repens, java fern, crypts, red tiger lotus, and anubias nana.

The fauna includes 4x angelfish, 2x clown loach, 1x albino bristlenose pleco, 2x clown plecos, 1x black skirt tetra, and 2x female guppies.

During the setup stage of the 65g reef tank I considered breaking down the planted tank, but I am happy that both are running and in the same room. It adds plenty of interest and I enjoy both for different reasons.

Let me know if you need any ludwigia as it grows fast and I prune it back every few weeks.
