  1. Yeah it was Krylon Fusion. The key to Fusion (or any paint really) is the prep. The surface needs to be sanded or chemically altered to allow the paint to get a good bond. That is pretty difficult on egg crate. Where it usually chips is when you dump a bunch of live rock on it.

Now that I think about it though, since I am planning to use it under rocks in a freshwater setup it really don't matter what color it is.

  2. The nice thing about tempered is that you can drill it with just about anything and it turns out the same. :) I like to use a hammer.

Did you end up replacing all the silicone where the new panel meets the old? I have always read that new to old doesn't hold very well, but have never actually tried it.

  3. I have a 58g rimless 30x30x15. Internal overflow, 2 inch drain, x2 3/4 inch returns drilled into the back. It sits on a 40 inch stand that is in ok shape. The tank has a few scratches though and is definately not starfire, but is 1/2 inch glass and plenty sturdy. $150 for the tank and stand (and a POS canopy if you want it). It is reef ready, but does not have a sump.

  4. Yep you will likely get the stand back Sunday. I have the tank full of water/vinegar right now and the overflow is leak free so I think it is good to move tomorrow. My wife will be happy to not see the tank in the garage, but I think even more happy to not see a bare 2x4 stand in the front room anymore.

  5. I thought about the Krylon (I paint the back of the tank with it), but it tends to chip over time when subjected to movement and running water. This will be a cap to my overflow so I would rather have something solid black. Plus white is $10 a sheet anyway so I might as well get it in black.

  6. lol I was gona say after having to dig up the main water line to my house because the prev owner was a DIY person and did not use primer . There is no way I would not use it but thats 80PSI

Kind of off topic, but where are you getting 80 PSI from around here? I feel pretty lucky when my PSI gauge hits 45. :)

  7. I don't have any welding equipment (or skills) and I doubt I could get the work done for less than what it cost me to build the new stand. Once I reskin it you will not be able to tell the difference anyway so I am pretty happy. Total cost for the wood stand was $39 and an afternoon out at my father in laws house. I still have to build a shelf on the bottom, but I will be reusing the ply off the steel stand. I hope to be leak testing the tank by Monday, but that will be another thread. :)

  8. Well after careful thought I am going to build a stand frame. The skin will work either way so no biggie there. I won't have the nice steel stand, but I really don't want to disassemble my front door and take it apart again down the road if I decide to go another direction and sell this tank. I don't think I will, but you never know. Thanks for the ideas.

  9. The house was built in 2006. I might give that a try, but the door itself is not quite 36 inches (about 35 7/8) and the stand is a true 36. I would hate to tear off all the molding just to find out I am off by 1/8 of an inch.

I guess the new question is can I build a stand frame to replace the steel with wood without breaking the bank (that already got broken by the purchase price)?

  10. None of my windows are big enough without having to remove the center brace/frame which I am not willing to do (ok my wife is not willing to let me). My front door is the only door that is close and will not come apart easily. After about an hour of scratching my head I have come to the conclusion I am screwed. I am thinking my only option is to build a new stand frame, or take the tank back.
