Well, nothing like bringing back a 4 year old post, but
Same question... Anyone have a local source for black egg crate?

Sweet! I got your old tank up and running finally last weekend. I only ran into one setback. I put the contents of my 58g into it and the tank is still empty.

The nice thing about tempered is that you can drill it with just about anything and it turns out the same. I like to use a hammer.
Did you end up replacing all the silicone where the new panel meets the old? I have always read that new to old doesn't hold very well, but have never actually tried it.

I have a 58g rimless 30x30x15. Internal overflow, 2 inch drain, x2 3/4 inch returns drilled into the back. It sits on a 40 inch stand that is in ok shape. The tank has a few scratches though and is definately not starfire, but is 1/2 inch glass and plenty sturdy. $150 for the tank and stand (and a POS canopy if you want it). It is reef ready, but does not have a sump.

Anyone have a left over heater they are dying to get rid of? It doesn't even have to be reliable, I just need it to heat water before it goes into tank.
-
Yep you will likely get the stand back Sunday. I have the tank full of water/vinegar right now and the overflow is leak free so I think it is good to move tomorrow. My wife will be happy to not see the tank in the garage, but I think even more happy to not see a bare 2x4 stand in the front room anymore.

Which size do you need? I have a WH5 in my garage you could have for $15 with T5 endcaps (2 sets).

I thought about the Krylon (I paint the back of the tank with it), but it tends to chip over time when subjected to movement and running water. This will be a cap to my overflow so I would rather have something solid black. Plus white is $10 a sheet anyway so I might as well get it in black.

lol I was gona say after having to dig up the main water line to my house because the prev owner was a DIY person and did not use primer . There is no way I would not use it but thats 80PSI
Kind of off topic, but where are you getting 80 PSI from around here? I feel pretty lucky when my PSI gauge hits 45.

Anyone have a local source for black egg crate? I just need a small piece about 4x12 inches.

Ouch! It was definately an oversight on my part. I should have measured the height. Oh well, the tank fits, and now so does the stand.

I don't have any welding equipment (or skills) and I doubt I could get the work done for less than what it cost me to build the new stand. Once I reskin it you will not be able to tell the difference anyway so I am pretty happy. Total cost for the wood stand was $39 and an afternoon out at my father in laws house. I still have to build a shelf on the bottom, but I will be reusing the ply off the steel stand. I hope to be leak testing the tank by Monday, but that will be another thread.

Well it is not the sexy steel stand I started with, but it does fit through the front door without having to take it off.

Looking good! The ceiling hangers came out really nice. Should look great when it is done. You sure don't mess around.

So you are calling me fat now? WTF?
Wait hang on, someone is at the door.
"Housekeeping, you want me fluff pillow?"
-
Interesting idea. I am not sure if you would even need the bolts as long as the cuts were very precise.
-
If I could remove the top and bottom tube on either the left or right in picture 1 it would slide right in.
-
I am having a hard time picturing the stand bolting together. I guess in theory I only need to remove one side worth of tubes and then it would angle through (rotate it as it goes through the door). Anyone have a picture example?

For the price, you may consider buying olaggie01's tank.
Missed the boat on that one.

Well after careful thought I am going to build a stand frame. The skin will work either way so no biggie there. I won't have the nice steel stand, but I really don't want to disassemble my front door and take it apart again down the road if I decide to go another direction and sell this tank. I don't think I will, but you never know. Thanks for the ideas.

The house was built in 2006. I might give that a try, but the door itself is not quite 36 inches (about 35 7/8) and the stand is a true 36. I would hate to tear off all the molding just to find out I am off by 1/8 of an inch.
I guess the new question is can I build a stand frame to replace the steel with wood without breaking the bank (that already got broken by the purchase price)?
-
None of my windows are big enough without having to remove the center brace/frame which I am not willing to do (ok my wife is not willing to let me). My front door is the only door that is close and will not come apart easily. After about an hour of scratching my head I have come to the conclusion I am screwed. I am thinking my only option is to build a new stand frame, or take the tank back.

Any ideas on getting a 36 inch wide stand through a 35" wide door? The stand is welded steel and is 36x36x37
Black egg crate?

Yeah it was Krylon Fusion. The key to Fusion (or any paint really) is the prep. The surface needs to be sanded or chemically altered to allow the paint to get a good bond. That is pretty difficult on egg crate. Where it usually chips is when you dump a bunch of live rock on it.
Now that I think about it though, since I am planning to use it under rocks in a freshwater setup it really don't matter what color it is.
