Well, nothing like bringing back a 4 year old post, but
Same question... Anyone have a local source for black egg crate?

I just turned mine in at RCA. They gave me $10 in store credit. It was a beautiful fish, but too aggressive towards the rest of the fish at feeding time. Also it is basically the last fish you are putting in, because mine beat the heck out of anything I tried to put in after. My diamond goby was the first victim, then a chromis. Fortunately I pull it out before it killed any fish, but I had to pull out all of my rock work to catch it. Mine was also a snail/hermit connoisseur.

I don't have the setup to raise them. I am guessing with my two wrasses and the clowns themselves there will be no survivors. I wonder what you get when you mix a false and true percula?
-
My overflow is almost completely silent. I am running a gate valve on the drain, and have a second drain that is a bit higher and only gets used if something goes wrong. I have to adjust it about once a month (usually when I mess with something), but it is pretty much hassle free. You can do it with any tank that has two bulkheads, but it is easier if you have three (two drains + one return).

After five years together, my two clowns have finally spawned (well this is the first time I have seen it anyway). The female is a big O clown, and the male is a True perc. Not sure how long the eggs will last, but it was pretty cool to see.

Imo these are all simple adds:
Melanurus Wrasse (you need a lot of sand for this guy)
Orange Stripe Prawn Goby (you need a lot of sand for this guy)
Diamond Watchman Goby (you need a lot of sand for this guy)
Blue Eye Golden Midas Blenny
Australian Black Percula's x 2
Purple Firefish x 3
These are hard especially with the competition above for similar food sources.
African Leopard Wrasse – one male, one female
These are iffy (temperment): I would add these at the same time down the road after the list above gets good and settled.
Heniochus Black & White Butterflyfish
Kole Yellow Eye Tang (add last with other tangs)
White Cheek Tang (add last with other tangs)
Blue Caribbean Tang (add last with other tangs)
I know that kills your free shipping plan, but 15 fish is a lot to add at once.

Are you sure the bottom of the tank is level? I always use 1/2 inch foam under my tank for this reason. Foam is the great equalizer.

RCA wasn't open when I went by earlier. You might want to call ahead.
What does the rock look like? Any pics?

I'll take the hammer if it is still available.

If you are doing a 100% reseal I would go with black. It looks so much nicer than clear IMO.

I don't think skimmers are efficient enough to worry about over skimming. I think the biggest benefit is probably oxygenation.

Thank you Teresa for hosting. I had a lot of fun. I am so glad I didn't bring my daughter or we would likely have two or three nano's by now. I especially liked the clown tank.
-
Do you have any of the blennies left? I don't have anythign to trade, I am just curious what they look like and how big?
-
Would it not be easier and more cost efficient to just get a different tank
Easier, yes. More cost efficient, no. Keep in mind his tank has odd dimensions, so likely he is not going to find the same thing off the shelf. This means what ever new tank he finds will not fit the stand, so the cost goes up. You can reseal a tank for under $100 and make it as good as new IMO, maybe better. Plus you can use black silicone, which is usually an upcharge for most aquarium makers (why I don't know).

I actually thought the bottom of your tank was epoxy coated plywood. I feel alot better about your plan now that I realize you have a glass bottom and then plywood. If you use the bracing on the inside I am not sure the plywood is even needed.
-
I think the plan as pictured will work. The only part I am a bit concerned about is the silicone between the bottom and the plywood. My tank was not supported at all under the glass except that it sat on the stand which was just an 1inch or so around the perimeter.

No worries. I should have just called you as your post mentioned (got to work on those reading skills). I am trying one out this weekend, so I will let you know, but if it sells before that no hard feelings.
Bump to the top...

You should avoid going over at all cost. First off his big tank is flippin awesome! Secondly his game system is not too shabby either. It will instanty make you realize that your tank needs some help. Oh sure the deals are great, but the mental trama afterwards? Not sure it is worth it.
Thanks again for the anemone, it looks great in my tank, and let me know if that coris wrasse becomes available (great looking fish).
Oh and it was great meeting you and good luck with the move!

I guess you never got my PM? If you still have it tomorrow I will take it.

Do you think it would be possible to cheat the six months by building a PVC/egg crate floor in the tank say at 4-6 inches in height that would be buried in the sand at the surface (basically under the sand but just enough so you don't see the egg crate). This would keep fish/hermits/etc from getting at anything deeper than the egg crate.
I can't stand the look of a DSB, but just a thought for those that want one.

Wow, I really suck at photography. Here is probably the most useful picture.
You can see the bracing they added. It is actually probably 3/8" thick x1" wide. I don't have the tank anymore or I would take better pictures. It is designed like yours though with the outside glass surrounding the bottom pane.
-
I think I mislead you. My tank came this way from the factory (Glass Cages). They chose to add the bracing on their own.
Black egg crate?

Yeah it was Krylon Fusion. The key to Fusion (or any paint really) is the prep. The surface needs to be sanded or chemically altered to allow the paint to get a good bond. That is pretty difficult on egg crate. Where it usually chips is when you dump a bunch of live rock on it.
Now that I think about it though, since I am planning to use it under rocks in a freshwater setup it really don't matter what color it is.
