  1. Post your readings. There may be a misconception between what you think is normal and what is normal. Include temperature.

You may have bad test kit(s). Do you put your hands in the tank? Do you wash them before putting them in the tank? I know, basic questions, but to troubleshoot this it needs to be broken down and assumptions thrown out.

  2. I have a red LED flashlight.  It's fantastic to pull out a few hours after the lights have gone out and the lights in the living room have been out for a while, too.  All sorts of interesting things go on and it doesn't scare things away (mostly... my YWG flees from it).

I noticed two new things tonight that I'll try to describe.  The first is worm-like.  It extended out of a hole in a rock and was banded, somewhat like a coral snake but without the repeating patterns.  It had some sort of mouth it would shove into the substrate and when it retracted, it was like the mouth folding into a sheath.  It was thick, too, probably thicker than a coffee straw but thinner than a pencil.

The second was similar to spaghetti worms except they weren't light colored like spaghetti worms and they didn't come out of tubes.  Instead, what appeared to be a dozen or two of these long, thin "arms"/"worms" emanating from a sponge-like base.  Think daddy-long-legs but with 18+ non-jointed legs coming from a slightly larger base.  I say "sponge-like" base because I saw the peppermint shrimp back over it and it looked like it jiggled and squished.  It is stationary.  It's been there since I had the tank, but I always thought there were a few spaghetti worms there... until tonight.

Any idea what these two things are?  ("Thing" is appropriate for the second critter.  It was making my skin crawl watching it.)

Oh, and I have three small (pin-sized) bubble algae on one of my rocks.  Grr.  I'm planning on leaving it alone and see what happens.  I have a mithrax crab, but Steve (as he's called) never goes over to that side of the tank.

  3. I avoided the 3D version... not a fan of the presentation in general.  I thought it was a good movie.  Not too heavy handed on gaia, evil corps, etc. but you get a lot of "humans are superior".  It's one of the few I might actually pick up on blu-ray.

  4. Update time.

She's still kicking around.  She's has a bit more movement and she wiggles her tail fin now.  She still swims upside down at the top of the tank, but she changes her depth more often now.  I have yet to see her swim right-side-up.  I would take the increased movement as a good sign, but really I know nothing about the health and behavior of fishies.

  5. Outcome unclear.

I went camping this past weekend and when we got back, she was stuck against the overflow. The rear portion of her body had this grayish fading of the scales, like they were damaged. She obviously was not going to be able to survive in my main tank.

I have a small tank that I put my water change water into to keep it around (and for some live rock I have in there). The temperature was fine and the salinity was dead on, so I took Toby out of the DT and put her in this smaller tank. I bought an airstone for some aeration. Unfortunately, any water movement, even me wiggling my hand in there, will cause her to tumble about the tank. Yesterday I did a 40% water change in the small tank and will do so again in a few days since there's no filtration (but not livestock other than her and a snail).

She doesn't move her tail fin. She does wiggle her pectoral finds. She stays at the water line with her mouth working. I have been feeding her Garlic Xtreme soaked Coral Frenzy (because it is very fine suspended particles) and other garlic-soaked foods (thanks Mama for the Garlic Xtreme lend). She'll move around the tank (again, only with her pectoral fins). I've seen her change her depth on occasion, too--it's more rare. I've also observed waste hanging from her, which tells me she is eating what I've been putting in there.

I have no idea what the future holds for my little girl.

  6. If you have an open top, would your tank receive enough oxygen even with the pumps turned off for a long period of time?  (I saw reference to oxygen deprivation and breaker tripping in another thread.)

  7. May I suggest using a submersible filter. I used one in my QT tank (when I had room for one). Gas exchange is created by breaking the surface tension of the water.

Can you suggest one or point me to one so I can see.  Usually I'm trying to aerate around 5-6g.  I use my MJ-1200 for a 30g trashcan.

  8. I don't know much about airstones to be honest--hence "system".  I was pretty it was multiple parts, but didn't know if the pump was submersible or not.  But yes, I think I need both since I have no other pumps other than MJ 1200 ones.

  9. Well, the good news is after not seeing her all day yesterday or early this morning, I found her back in her second hiding place. She is poking her head out a little bit, but not coming out. She /seems/ a little more perky. I finished the 5% water change for today. Let's hope she's on the uptick!

    Thanks!

  10. Derek: I ran out of time today. Where does it all go?

Dave: I was home a lot of the day and I made many trips searching for her and have not been able to find her. She's real little and there are lots of hiding places. Each visit I performed the sniff test and don't smell death. I performed a small 5% water change today and plan on doing it tomorrow too. (Advice from wetwebmedia.)
