Thanks! Here's a forum dedicated to it: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?forumid=555

Howdy.
I have several places in my aquascape that have overhangs or caves where shallow to deep shadows are cast. I would like to fill these spots in with growth. I know the red chili coral hangs upside down in caves, so that's one on my list. Can ya'll toss out a bunch of things that do fine with very little to no direct light?
Thanks.

You should frag that and diversify it into as many reefers' tanks at possible to greatly increase the success of keeping that beautiful piece from dying off completely. I'll volunteer a section of my tank for one of the responsibly fragged pieces.

Indeed.

From Current USA:
Thanks for writing. There can be a number of factors for the microbubbles appearing. The cause of this has to do with surface tension. The microbubbles created by the protein skimmer will normally dissipate before reaching the return chamber, but there are conditions that will increase the surface tension of the water and cause the bubbles to remain intact longer and become smaller in size. Some additives like water conditioners, dechlorinators and ammonia reducers will cause these, as well as natural things like organic buildup in the aquarium. If you feed heavily this can cause organic buildup in the aquarium which can cause this. Make sure to discontinue adding any additives right now, lower the skimmer cup so it collects more of a clear liquid, and put new activated carbon in the system to pull out the offending compound that is keeping the bubbles intact longer. -
I'll take a blue tip green slimer.

After 4 days without the skimmer and 1 day with, I can say with confidence that it is the skimmer (3 months old) that is causing the micro-bubbles. I'm going to try the stand. How high is the stand?
-
@mike - Yes.
@bill - I have blue xenia mounted on the back wall that is spreading well.
@non - Thanks for the reference.

When I hit the breakout stages (it was moderately bad) of hair algae when my tank was setup, I did a 3-days lights out with only natural lighting lighting the tank. Lack of intense lighting plus the CuC got it under control and no problems. As a matter of course, I do a 3-day lights out every two months now. I finished one the other day and I'm always awed by the polyp extension when the cycle starts up again.
I imagine this would work with cyano outbreak as well.

Howdy.
I have an area in my tank that is high light and high flow and am looking for some suggestion on starter corals in that area. I have a red montipora (the real common one) already that seems to be growing pretty well right now. I would be especially interested in some (pretty cheap) ones fragged from local members. I want to try a few different ones and make sure that they grow well (i.e., survive) in my tank esp. with the custom LED lighting before I spend money on more expensive stuff.
Suggestions? Thanks!

What is the purpose of the stand? What is it doing that prevents micro-bubbles?

Sometime during the night, Toby passed away. She was survived by Chew the sponge and Trixi the snail. May she rest in peace.

+1 for stand. Why?

I'm having the same problem with my Solana. I'm assuming with good water params I can leave the skimmer off for a few days?
-
No. It's against a wall. How do skimmers cause micro-bubbles? I see refs to that.
-
Howdy. Over the last two (three?) weeks or so, I've been having a micro-bubble problem and I'm not sure how to troubleshoot it. You see bubbles in the water column as well as clinging to rock (esp. overhands), on macro-algae, etc.
I have a Solana 34g, which if you aren't familiar with it, has three chamber in the back--overflow/skimmer (#1), filtration/refugium (#2), and return pump/ATO (#3). Here's what I have in each of the chambers:
#1 - overflow -> filter pad -> skimmer
#2 - from top to bottom, filter pad -> drip plate -> chaeto -> live rubble -> purigen -> chemi-pure -> drip plate -> filter pad (to catch chaeto bits from flowing into return area)
#3 - return pump / ATO bottles
I've removed everything, disassembled the pumps as much as they can be disassembled, cleaned stuff, and put it all back with no effect.
How do I go about troubleshooting this?

Howdy. I have these small, black spots slowly appearing on my live rock. It is mainly on the flat side of a rock close to the lights, but I'm starting to see some a little further down. If I'm not mistaken, during the actinics I see what appears to be peach-fuzz-like on the black spots. Here's a very crude picture taken top-down with a shaky iPhone through surface agitation.
Thanks!

I believe lost an Acro frag to one of these things - didn't notice it growing on the frag base, and I'm guessing it stung it. There was no other bobvious reason for the frag to die so suddenly. Keep an eye on it...
Anything that sheds its hard outer protective layer millions of years ago has to be pretty badass.

In one of the upgrades the view new content page lost the link to mark all as read. This is with an iPhone.
Cheers.

Wish what? That you had a harem of 8?

My overflow snags the floating stuff if I leave the return pump on.
-
Circulation - Always On
Return Off - 15 minutes
Skimmer Off - 1 hour
Question for those fish feeders that turn of the circulation pumps. Why? Don't the fish like the movement?

The Koralia's will also eventually break from it. Well, the 120V ones will. The 12V ones are designed to cut on and off. I've heard that the Maxi-Jet's work well with poor-man wavemakers.
