Headless_donkey
We have three tanks set up with refugiums of different sizes. Our largest is on a 30G cube (the seahorse tank). Well, that fuge just doesn't seem to grow cheato at all. In fact is seems to be getting smaller in amount. We have a 5500 K light on it and it has plenty of flow. I do not understand what is going on. Our pod population has grown and nitrates are down since adding the fuge, but the cheato is going away. Any suggestions? My gut feeling is to let it go if the tank is doing well, but we would like to utilize the nutrient export and pod refuge properties of the cheato. I can't believe I have typed this much about extraneous macro. confused2.gif
stoneroller
If you weren't concerned about spreading nasties, then how about rotating the chaeto amongst your sumps? See what happens. Could be a nutrient limitation in that setup.
thedude
I think that in my experience a 6500k bulb grows chaeto better. Best place to check would be www.melevsreef.com John
Headless_donkey
I now believe my experience is that cheato grows better under 6500K, but in this link 5100k is recommended. http://www.melevsreef.com/fuge_bulb.html Any way I think I way going to switch to a different bulb. thank you
Wryknow
You may need to supplement the iron a bit in order to get the chaeto to take off. (I use the Seachem myself but I haven't heard any evidence that there is much difference between any of them.) Also, how many watts of light are you using? I'm just using a GE 150w daylight DE MH ($6/bulb) on a shop light and mine grows like crazy.
liquafried
cheato grows like crazy. i also believe its a nutrient problem, or maybe to much cheato? algea will regulate its self if no room to grow.
Headless_donkey
It is a possiblility that the other macro in the tank is exporting the nutrients before they get to the cheato. The water is good and the horses are happy so we think we will just wait and see. thank you
