Brooks
That is a Mandarin Goby, right? I used to have one, but it died because it wouldn't eat anything. :'( Yours is VERY pretty! It is funny, really... how they look TOO pretty to be real!
reefman
Little_Reef, yours probably died because you didn't have enough of a pod population to support it. dpotts, that is a very nice one. The rule of thumb is you need at least a 75 gal system (I think that's right) in order to have enough of a pod population to keep them from starving to death. If it's smaller than that, then you would need to have a refuge to help pods, and/or supplement the tank with pods form the LFS. The article that was recently posted about breeding green mandarins also talks about how he was able to train 2 or the 3 he had (one died) to eat frozen food. I've never tried it (I have two - a male and a female) but I've heard other people say they have. I have never seen a mandarin eat frozen food, however, with my own eyes. dpotts
Thanks guys...she is pretty isn't she. I have her in my 90g that has a VERY healthy population of pods. None of my other fish are pod eaters so things should be good. I also have more than 90lbs of LR with a few areas of rubble where pods can reproduce without getting eaten. reefman
Sounds like you have a great set up. And if I didn't say so before, she is very pretty. I'm sure you will enjoy her. Stephen

Zarathustra2
Thats not a male with the big fin on the head?
dpotts
I think the males have an enlongated dorsal fin. The other 2 in the tank at my LFS had a long thin tip on the dorsal fin.
Zarathustra2
Planning on breeding then? Baby mandarins are uber cute.
dpotts
No I don't have any plans on breeding mandarins. I plan on just having the one female. Having 2 in a 90g is pushing it.....they would eat up the pod population too fast and without a refuge I'm afraid that I won't be able to keep up the population enough to keep them fed. reefman
I would love to try, and think the babys are super cute too, but I don't see it happening. Just too many other things coral realted I want to do. I would think I would have to separate them out of my display tank to give the fry any chance of living, and I wouldn't want to do that either. You would have to get them trained to eat frozen food if you did that to keep them alive. Stephen
chrisfowler99
They had a bunch of these at RCA the other day. I almost cracked and bought one. Not sure I have the setup to care for it, though... Need something to replace my Diamond Goby...why not a more colorful Goby?
