Manny
What exactly does maricultured corals mean? I know it's a noob question but is one I truly don't understand. Is there a process involved? Details please.
victoly
The corals are grown in an ocean nursery.
Sascha D.
Maricultured means that they were fragged and grown in the ocean instead of in an aquarium. The prefix Mari means that it is connected with the sea, as in Maritime. LR is cultivated in the same way. A vendor will drop off a bunch of rock in one location and then collect it after a certain period of time. Let's say one year. In that time the rock grows all sorts of stuff on it and becomes cultivated by bacteria, becoming live rock.
Manny
I see. Seems like it should still be classified as wild caught coral. I mean, it's still in its natural environment so why classify it differently?
jolt
Because it's raised in a controlled environment versus wild harvested, would be my guess. People like the ecological aspects of maricultured versus wild harvested.
FarmerTy
It's like farmed fruits or wild fruit... classification makes sense depending on the reason it is there and the intent for its use. Sure, they grow in the same environment... Farmed fish or wild caught fish is another example...
madsalt
These farms are nice because they do not pull the corals from the existing reefs, they frag off the colonies they already have.
