Peter Gott
If there were a way to screen for that parasite, man-oh-man, I'd sure love to have one as a pet!
Timfish
"can carry a parasite that causes meningitus in humans" We all live on the edge somehow. Myself, I stick my hand it containers of water that may or may not have animals making palytoxin or have cultures of mycrobacterium marinum, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mycobacterium_marinum

+Dustin Blevins
The "deadly" snaiil reference is ridiculous and a scare tactic used by the media to draw attention. It was reported by Texas Parks and Wildlife that the one found in Houston wasn't a GALS but a native "wolf snail". The claim that they can carry meningitis is similar to saying all reptiles have salmonella or all bats have rabies. It's possible, but not likely. When I lived in Los Angeles I knew a person that had a few in a display. I never saw them, but I saw pictures. They are pretty cool in my opinion. I want to get one and name it Gary
