George Monnat Jr
I cant keep my ph above 8 for squat. I dose baking soda or pickling lime but it always falls in 3 days no matter what. Im tired of chasing ph and just going to worry about ak for now. I go by this article: Chemistry And The Aquarium: Solving Calcium And Alkalinity Problems by Dr. Randy Holmes-Farley Paraphrasing, to increase alkalinity without changing calcium you should add either baking soda or washing soda, but it's pH dependent. pH of 8.2 or above: 1 tsp/50 gal baking soda (sodium bicarbonate; sodium hydrogencarbonate) to raise alkalinity in that 50 gallons by ~0.4 meq/L (~1 dKH) pH below 8.2: 1 tsp/50 gal washing soda (sodium carbonate) to raise alkalinity in that 50 gallons by ~0.6 meq/L (~1.7 dKH) There's also a warning to make sure you don't use brands with perfumes or surfactants in them. Maybe adding washing soda instead of baking soda will help? There's also this artilce by Randy: Low pH: Causes and Cures
