Live Phytoplankton

Hi Everyone,

I'm currently producing my own phytoplankton to feed my culture of copepods and help enrich brine shrimp. I've recently been offered the opportunity to start with a fresh pure Nanochloropsus culture. I'm wondering if others would be interested in purchasing a bottle (16.9 or 2L soda) on the cheap in a rotating basis. I'm trying to decide if I should expand slightly or not.

Here are some questions:

1. How many reefers would be interested in driving to Pflugerville to pick up a live nanochloropsus bottle once a week/two weeks or month?

2. What size bottles are preferable and how much should I charge?

3. Does this sound reasonable: You prearrange the size bottle and come pick it up on Sundays between 1 and 3pm. You would bring a replacement bottle with you (I don't drink soda so these aren't just lying around in my house) and some cash. This bottle should last you anywhere between two weeks to a month in the fringe. I'd have a schedule set up so your next culture is ready on a rotating basis.

What do peps think? If there is enough interest then I'm down. I don't see this as making much if any money, more of helping each other out - I'm doing this for myself anyway so why not.

Let me know - I'm trying to decide over the course of the week if I should pursue this idea.

Thanks,

Teresa

I would just because I'm in North Austin and you're just a skip away from me. Pricing is hard because I don't think anybody would pay more than what you can pick up DT's for, which doesn't lend you much profit if that's the case. For me, roughly $20 for a 5-month supply of phyto using the 15oz bottle. So if something was priced similar, I'd be happy to support local peeps, especialy one's on ARC.

I would be interested in purchasing copepods since everytime I go to the LFS their always out but driving up there for 1 bottle at the current rate of gas negates the savings but if we get enough south austin people with requests then maybe we can arrange some pick up rotation. Unfortunately I don't think I have a need for phytoplankton but If you do plan on selling I suggest you buy some bottles rather than having people bring their own. I'm sure you can find something cheaper but these come out to .40c each http://www.amazon.com/Translucent-White-Plastic-bottle-Ounces/dp/B004I3UMF8

Hope that helps.

I'd be interested for sure!

I think the easiest thing would be to use say half-liter (16.9oz) water bottles (Ozarka brand of course), for $10 or so?

The similar sized bottles of DT run $20 at the LFS. We would be getting our phyto for half off, and they would be FRESH!

I would be interested in pods. I thought about a service like this a while ago but have put it on delay as I am looking for a new house. What would make it really epic is if you could get a local high school kid to deliver the bottles for an additional 5 dollar delivery fee. With 10-15 customers he could make a nice profit for a couple of hours of driving on Sunday.

sounds like there is an interest. I want to make sure my cultures are sustainable and I will probably give the first few away for free if peps promise to give constructive feedback. I'm crazy busy with state testing prep (i'm a teacher and the test is April 28th) so I won't start anything until after that. I'm thinking this could be a useful summer hobby/extra income maker?

Thanks All
