lewisweil
Does anyone have hints for cheap large tanks. Like grow out tanks. I have looked at fiberglass raceways and the ones I have seen cost more than I would like to spend. Anyone have a clever system they use. Like using horse troughs or something like that? +dapettit
I think barderer is using a bath tub. I ahve also heard of folks using large rubermaid tubs.
lewisweil
Both good ideas, I'm going to have to scope out big tubs. Any other suggestions?
JamesL
Keep an eye on the hardware for sale section I see a lot of a good deals on tanks pass through there.
medi
You could get one of the 50G drums from Austin Homebrew and cut it in half vertically. It wouldn't look very good, but it would be super easy to plumb and dirt cheap. I think they sell the drums for $10.
NonSequitur
The large rubbermaid tubs sold as stock troughs work well as sumps, so I would imagine they would work as grow out tanks as well.. I'd stay away from the metal water troughs for the obvious reasons, but the plastic ones work great. Also, watch craigslist, people frequently list 55gal aquariums for as low as $20-$30 (I think there might be one on there now in Georgetown)
Timfish
Plywood box with a rubber liner? I think Aquadome has one like that.
NonSequitur
That would work.. or for that matter just about any sufficiently strong container with a vinyl pond liner.
lewisweil
Are the rubbermaid tubs ever made out of plastic that may not be so friendly for long term occupation by living things?
+Melissa
I find troughs on Craigslist frequently. I saw one for a 170 gallon for $60. Measures about 2x2x6 and is the rounded rectangular shape. I have seen them for free sometimes too.
NonSequitur
I can't say for sure, but I would guess that the livestock troughs are designed not to leach toxic chemicals, since they're designed to hold water intended for drinking while being exposed to the elements.
