+mcallahan
My favorite line: "The most expensive tank Mr. Muir ever built, though, was a $750,000 one for a woman in Dallas who had visited the Maldives and wanted to recreate the experience of lying in tropical waters gazing up at the stars. She had a planetarium ceiling and crescent-shaped aquarium panels hoisted by forklift into her second-floor bathroom."

+Hydro
I think that they paid about $150,000 too much! I bet most of the cost was mounting it to the ceiling.
+mcallahan
All I can say is $750,000 is a lot of trips to any reef destination of choice...

They probably over paid on that one $500,000....must be nice to be super rich, hopefully one day I will know the feeling
Starsprinkle Rainbowsmile
Am I to understand that some of these aquariums are suspended from the ceiling and are viewed looking upwards!? I'm no engineer, but I'm sure a lot of the cost in some of these tanks is just shoring up the structural support. I've been in some NY brownstones that shouldn't have even passed code. +mcallahan
Am I to understand that some of these aquariums are suspended from the ceiling and are viewed looking upwards!? Yep. I don't think a tank is worth looking at from below so I don't know why you'd front the money to pay for that view. But heck, if I was going to drop $750,000 for a tank, why not? mooric
Am I to understand that some of these aquariums are suspended from the ceiling and are viewed looking upwards!? I don't think you view them looking upwards, you view them in the normal fashion. They just don't have a stand/cabinet underneath them. mooric
Nahh just have an external overflow on the side facing the wall with your plumbing etc. in the fish room on the other side.
KaceyJ
am i looking at the above pic incorrectly? it looks like they put it in the middle of a staircase. effectively eliminating the usefulness of the stairs?

No wonder they spend upwards of $1000 / month for someone else to do it!

lewisweil
Scuttlefish has a pic up of the 750k aquarium. Wow that is underwhelming.
chrisfowler99
I imagine the $750k is more than just the aquarium...at least I pray it is. I'm betting it's the entire room, including "planetarium ceiling", etc... Still...stupid.

Derek
Very nice! I'd be afraid of drunken guests falling down the stairs into the tank. That'd have to be a sober-zone.
